  1. Well @OXYGEN I'm disappointed in the 2.0 then but as @Catlover has said I've also been a bit puzzled by the existence of the 2.0. To me a hybrid is all about fuel efficiency in which case why would a company market a 'high performance' version? I was initially somewhat disappointed in my 1.8 since the fuel consumption wasn't much better than my Jazz. But a combination of engine loosening and me learning how to best use the hybrid system has changed my mind. It would be interesting to know if I could get better fuel consumption if I returned to a Jazz but I don't think it would be a valid test. If I drove the Jazz the way I now drive the Corolla I'd be running in the Jazz engine in Atkinson mode and a 1.3l engine in Atkinson mode is painful. As regards acceleration it may well be cultural. But like @Catlover I see no reason to drive like the herd. Most of the time I have no problems keeping up or pulling away from people even though I don't use the battery to help. And if some impatient git in a BMW or Audi insists on driving on my rear bumper I either let them through (best place to have an idiot is in front where you can control the gap) or ignore them. 9.9 times out of ten speed and heavy acceleration doesn't gain you anything anyway. In the UK at least most journeys are less than half an hour and most time is lost in the urban part. Time saved on the open road by overtaking is unlikely to be more than a minute. And it will generally be lost as soon as the overtaker hits the urban area. In fact the best way to save journey time is to know how to minimise stopping at roundabouts and understanding the best lanes to use if you have a choice. Interestingly both of these things tie in to fuel efficiency since it's all part of situational awareness and acceleration sense.

  2. The 2006 Avensis would have weighed between 1330-1535kg, and the 2010 Avensis between 1435 and 1650kg - so the newer one will be heavier, plus it will have more stringent emissions equipment.

  4. Today my friend Waqar who is a member of this forum, has become the latest victim. His wife went to Leatherhead leisure centre in Surrey, and the theft took place in the carpark. His car is gen 2 Prius. A couple of months back whilst he was having the car MOT, he saw these shields made for fitting under the car. He thought about getting one, but obviously did not. I don't have information on the garage supplying these shields. The car is now at another garage having a replacement cat' and sensor fitted. It is not a genuine Toyota, but the garage fitting, plus other sources have said, the thieves seem attracted to genuine Toyota cats! Waqar has told me the carpark manager at the leisure centre seemed shifty, whilst another employee seemed more honest and told him, there had been 9 similar thefts! I told Waqar to add this comment when reporting to the police. If there is a pattern, then they could investigate. If the police had the resources, they could put a bait car there, and follow to the scrap dealer. That's what I would want, but in reality things never work like that.

  5. I have not checked the cross member, but there has hardly been any knocking either. What ever the feeling was, I haven't noticed it. Car drives fine and pass the MOT back in March this year, with tyres tread getting close to limit in a few thousand miles. Tyres were replaced in August. If anything shows up, I will post.

  6. Well if you get 10mpg on average more with the Corolla it’s ok and it is as a result of the hybrid system, both cars are very similar as power delivery at least on paper, Leon also is a turbo charged and with DSG tranny so will produce more torque and sense of faster acceleration similar to how diesels have that false sense that they are way faster than a petrol powered cars but in reality in many cases they are not. Imo 2.0 hybrid from Toyota is especially suitable for people who do more motorway miles and like faster driving , this is where larger engine size more horses will deliver better performance at the coast of lower mpg 5-10. But there is one important question here., will the 2.0 hybrid deliver the same performance and driving pleasure as a similar petrol or diesel only powered car? ,. hm probably not , and this is because of the drive train and how all those power from both ice and e motor is delivered to the wheels. However if you can sacrifice a little bit of dynamics and pleasure against little bit of extra mpg and reliability the 2.0 hybrid is a best choice of its times. 👍

  7. If I understand it correctly, it's an add-on alternative . If you're in the car without the appropriate phone connected (which may be wired or wireless) the installed infotainemt will work as usual, connect the phone and you have to use it's (carplay / auto) interface. I stand to be corrected though, as I've only seen Apple Carplay used a couple of times.

  8. I don't get it. Your old Leon could do 40 mpg, 7,8 l/100 km. translates into 40 mpg, based on 3 years average consumption. In a previous post you say, that your Corolla is 11 mpg worse?? That's only 29 mpg, and if that is the case, something is terrible wrong. That's like "pedal to the metal" mpg's.

  9. One thing to remember with this type of valve cap sensor, is to make sure you put a good amount of anti-seize compound to the valve stem before fitting. That will help stop the lock-nut and cap itself from corroding irreparably onto the valve stem on our salty winter roads.

  10. Damn, no wonder the ride on the 18" rims is so crap, assuming they're also run-flats. Another reason to junk those Falkens as soon as I can. ETA: Looking at the Falken website it seems the 18" tyres are not run-flats - and neither are the 17" ones necessarily. The 225/45/17 is available as both a conventional tyre and as a runflat. You can tell which from the sidewall code, as the normal tyre is 224/45R17 94W XL, and the run-flat is 225/45RF17 91W. The run-flat is noisier and has worse wet grip according to the Falken web page. https://www.falkentyre.com/en/tyres/car-tyres/product-detail/40761

  11. Owners manuals for the Avensis (back to 2011/12) may be downloaded by doing a generic search on https://www.toyota.co.uk/tme#/my-toyota/eManual Before 2014, Toyota supplied full owners manuals with new cars, and these would have been the full owners manual as per the above link. For the 2011/12 Avensis the full owners manual is 772 pages. You may be able to order a paper copy from your Toyota dealership at your cost.

  13. Welcome to the club. I too am new to Toyota and there is clearly a cultural difference compared to my previous Hondas. Whereas the Honda is 'sporty', Toyota appears to focus on a calm and gentle approach to driving. E.g the driving mode switch produces a considerable difference between eco, normal and sport, but its location in front of the shift lever implies that you have to make up your mind to be sporty or normal when you set off. When joining a busy motorway, it would be dead handy if the switch were on the steering wheel. I'm sure you will find out what I mean. The manuals are frankly a bit of a pain and you will have to download the version for the infotainment system. I have put it on a tablet so that I can sit in the car and read it as I go through the various menus. Still, I'm loving the smooth driving experience and economy. I don't think I will go back to a manual gearbox again.

  15. I'd seriously consider removing CAT myself and putting a straight pipe, refit for MOT.. If your government is too lazy to fix the problem, which does not exist in EU states. We have laws here which says mandatory ID check and they write down your info, cameras on places where they weigh the scrap metal, etc, due to this, cat stealing gangs are long gone. If country is too lazy to help it's citizens, why must one spend extra money for a catloc and fitting, only to have it stolen, so to pay more money for a new one and a higher premium if you involve insurance which likes to take money, but never to give. That's so absurd..

  16. Just as background info; the throttle pedal is entirely electric, so there are none of the throttle cables fitted to your car that were typical on other cars before, say, 2006. The fact that the pedal was physically stuck down lends this to being a purely a mechanical problem (with just the pedal itself) rather than anything at all beyond it, as you probably already knew. Because the pedal has just a simple electrical plug and 2 or 3 bolts holding it in, removing it to be very closely inspected for grit, stones etc. getting into the mechanism should be quite a quick job. The pedal could be checked for stickiness 'on the bench', as there is no need for it to be back in the car to check that the pedal returns correctly. I have not come across this this problem. With regards the juddering, starting with the cheapest to fix, I would be thinking about possible ignition coil failing. The Mk1 Auris hybrids have sometimes suffered rainwater leaks into the spark plug area underneath the ignition coils. But if that was the case, I would have expected your garage to have noted seeing rust or corrosion when the plugs were changed. But an error code is usually logged with this fault. . A new coil is the likely fix here. But without a code there it is just guesswork as to which one, or if it is this problem at all. Or, another possibility given the miles covered - an EGR cooler blockage. But this usually logs an error code of some description as well, and your mileage is really a little low for this. The fix here is to strip and clean the EGR valve, cooler and inlet manifold as per this video:- There are no parts needed for this, but it is a time consuming job. How is the fuel consumption? Does the car burn much oil? Any strange noises when the car is juddering? Do you know what plugs your (non - Toyota?) garage fitted, i.e. is it on your invoice? Strange though it sounds, the cars run best on Denso brand plugs, but not to the extent of suffering a judder like yours. I have nothing against Redex injector cleaner, but as it is so cheap and easy to do, I would try a different brand of injector cleaner, perhaps say, Wynns or Forte, in the meantime. The above problems are not specific to hybrid cars, this is just normal garage spanner work, the same as checking the coils and changing the plugs. I'm sure someone will be along soon with some other suggestions........

  17. If a car throws some warning messages a short while after you have changed or altered something, that is frequently the cause. So it could be something to do with your pads or discs or it is quite possible you disturbed the sensors when you were working on the brakes. I would investigate Dippy's idea.

  20. Friend of mine in the motor trade recently had one stolen off a Prius on his forecourt. Forecourt was floodlit and he has full colour HD cctv of the theft. Police say not much chance of catching the culprits! Seems like the give out a crime number and give up... Obviously his insurance (already sky high) will increase further if he makes a claim.
