  1. It's refrigerant gas (different types dependant on car/age of car). It's not uncommon to need a top up/regas maybe every 3 years or so, but also not uncommon to last for 10 years with no regas. It's luck of the draw, but using it regularly prevents the seals drying out thus prolonging it's life. Lots of different views on air con and whether it causes the car to use more fuel etc, so people can be hesitant to use it all the time. Personally I haven't owned a car (since a/c became common) that it made any difference to whatsoever, and mine is either set to auto or on all year round.

  2. A new a map update was released today MAP update 2020 V1 but its via OTA and not the usual USB download. I assume this for newer model who has Apple carplay aNd Android Auto. How about us who haven’t got the chance for AA/AC to be installed / upgraded our system? This retrofit upgrade has been delayed for so long. Come on Toyota , fulfill your promised from the start of saLes of the new Corolla.

  3. Had a similar problem to mine but not quite as bad of a leak. My mechanic checked mine and wagered it was leaking from the timing chain tensioner, so I replaced the o ring only. Also for peace of mind I had him do the timing chain cover gaskets, front crank seal and reseal my sump pan. Not a drop leaked since. When I get round to powder coating my rocker cover, hopefully next week, I will be fitting a new seal kit which I have. If your gonna replace the clutch, make sure you replace the rear main seal as well.

  4. Use a pair of vice grips and lock them tight enough to hold back the fluid but not too tight as it could damage the hose.

  5. Hi, The traction battery (the big one that drives the car along, that has a display on the dash) will be fine. You have a problem with the 'normal' 12v one in the boot. Unfortunately you can not easily open the boot to get to charge it, because the boot has an electrically driven lock. You can get into the boot by lowering the back seats, and gaining access to the inside of the hatch door, to manually undo its lock, but this is awkward, unless you enjoy such challenges. (All these procedures are listed in the full owner's manual, available for download, for free, from the Toyota GB website, by the way) But, if you open the bonnet, there is a big black fuse box that sits beyond the passenger side headlamp. If you lift/remove the cover via its front-mounted latch/tang, there is a narrow red plastic cover towards the back of the box. Unclip it so it pivots up, revealing a sizeable metal connector. This exists to allow you to jump start the car. Use this positive connection and any earth/chassis point you care to choose (one of the zinc-plated suspension top nuts is very close by, or a substantial shiny part of the engine or the chassis will do) as the negative connection. Connect your jump leads to these, obviously making sure you connect positive to positive (red to red), and negative (black) lead to ground/chassis/engine block mentioned. (In actual fact, it is good practice to put the black lead on last, and off first, when finished, to reduce the risk of an accidental short circuit.) This will allow you to put the car into 'ready' in the normal way, which will begin to charge the car 12v battery even when it is not moving, or the petrol engine is not running, providing the car is in 'Park' position, as displayed on the dash. The boot lock can then be opened to access the battery directly, if required. It is quite possible that some error lights will show on the dash at this point, these should go off when the car is driven in the normal fashion, it is not a cause for concern, given the flat battery. A short journey will also possibly get the battery into a working state, but ideally the battery needs charging overnight, preferably with a charger that can be used with an AGM type car battery, which your 12v battery is. This type of charger is not essential in the first instance, any car charger will get you out of this problem. Or just go for a long drive (do you have relatives in Durham?, which is OK in the lockdown, apparently). In your car, the hybrid battery is under the back seats, by the way, but this makes no difference to this problem.

  6. aircon has come a long way since its early days in the early days you use to hear a cluunk and see the revs drop and feel the engine slow down when the AC was turned on due to the load put on the engine nowadays you dont feel anything like that if your driving a hybrid i would say it doesn't effect the mpg as its an electric pump driven from the hybrid battery so no extra load on the engine and the battery is always being charged up .

  7. Or Daihatsu badges as the Prius+ was also sold as the Daihatsu Mebius in some Asian countries, albeit in five seat form.

  8. the job of aircon is to remove moisture from the air you then have dry air that can be heated or cooled, i dont know why people only ever think aircon produces cold air, offices have aircon airports too and they are always nice and warm in winter without there being any radiators present.

  9. Might be better to get some spray Gunk or similar and fully clean off all that oil around the engine block , then would think you will soon spot the leak as it looks considerable. Could be so many causes, rocker cover probably favourite, but not heard of any mention of timing chain cover gaskets being a problem. Have you checked, nipped up the rocker cover bolts/screws ? The clutch slip, could that be oil getting in there or just worn from hard work, doing it yourself or a garage ? worth finding somewhere that can skim the flywheel if needed, or fit a new one.

  11. After much experimenting with the air-con in a Mondeo that I had the misfortune to own, I discovered that the higher speed you run the fan, the warmer the chilled air is. Basically, the fan can run the air through the evaporator faster that it can be chilled. If you use a slower fan speed, the air will be colder.

  12. You should run your car’s AC for ten minutes in every couple of weeks.

  13. You get a free month with the Carista dongle. Well the first month is free - but you do have to enable a subscription. Not sure how it works on Apple products, but on an Android device you enable the subscription via the Google Play store, but you can cancel it immediately and just use the first month free, without being charged. Any other changes you want to make in the future, you'd have to take out another subscription.

  14. This is the list of adjustable settings using Carista, including the window settings, read from my Corolla this morning. I've turned the annoying seat dings off on mine, as I use the car for work, and the rear seats are far too sensitive to having boxes on etc. The warning still flashes on the display (which is fine for me) but I'm no longer being deafened when transporting heavy items. Obtained with Carista 5.0.1 for Android. If an app on a mobile phone can make these changes, then the dealer certainly should be able to, it's just a matter of how helpful and willing they are.

  15. It's certainly useful on days (like today) when the sun makes the car hot while parked to be able to open all the windows as soon as within keyfob range, so the worst of the heat has been let out by the time you get it the car.

  16. You can enable these features using the Carista app and an Obdlink LX / Carista OBD device, on the Corolla. The Obdlink LX is better than the Carista OBD device when it comes to hybrid HSD4 features, as the HybridAssistant app shows a lot more detail, but for the Carista app, it makes no difference. If you can do this with an app, surely the dealers must be able to do it.
