Had a weeks holiday in Somerset last week. Covered 437 miles, about 170 of those miles were on the motorway. Filled up yesterday evening and the car recorded a consumption of 69.9. Put in 29.3 litres which actually works out at 67.7 MPG. I'm happy with that.

Worth checking Toyota dealer for battery replacement. Was a (decent) fixed price - fitted with 5 year warranty - when I had mine replaced. Leaving the Hybrid parked (and not started) for a "long" period is hard on the tiny little 12v battery running the alarm, remote unlock, etc... The "long" interval can be rather short if your battery is getting on a bit. Otherwise it has an easy life compared to a 12v in a non-hybrid (no cranking the engine to start it!)

My wife did a 9 mile trip this morning mainly in 30/40 zones got 95.2mpg

I had OEM Toyos “Poxes” on the phv and they spun up in the dry! The wet was like driving on ice, so at 7000 miles (hardly any wear) I fitted Goodyear Vector 4. They grip in all conditions, economical, quiet, and cheap, what a revelation. I thought Toyota would fit at least decent tyres on their cars, never thought to check before but I will in future.

The battery is goosed, if you're having to jump it - low voltage will make the ecu and other modules freak out

It's been mentioned on here (and on another forum) that when the O2 sensor fails it lights up all those 3 lights (strange software 'feature'!). Get the O2 sensor replaced - that should be the cure.

new battery...job done id reccomend a 063 size varta...about 45£ posted on ebay , they perform very well

Know what you saying Roger, but biggest bugbear with a Toyota hybrid is that especially the rear discs corrode and sliders stick due to lack of use, caused by the motor doing most of the braking.

All discs rust when left for a while but one decent brake application cleans them adequately, Roger

I like that idea of cleaning discs up. Tried it this morning, made sure no cars behind me, put into neutral, immediately more “free wheeling” effect, then the braking. Lovely shiny discs all round, but there again, I didn’t look before went shopping. doh!

MPG on similar roads and similar driving conditions on motorways, city driving, A&B roads 340 miles round trip, on the first trip I got 71.7 mpg and a month later same journey I got 69.9 mpg. Not car calculations.

Ok, if you look at the brake discs if they are not shiny metal but rusty this can mean you have a stuck slider pins and that can cause the issues you describe, the pads will rub onto the disc surface. Your brakes might need to be cleaned and lubricated, it’s a common issue on hybrid cars since these cars uses e motor to slow down and actual brakes does not get enough braking force (friction)to clean up themselves . Let see what the dealer will say about it. , hopefully they will get it sorted fast. You can also try to clean the brakes as you do few slow downs from 60 mph to 20 mph in N neutral, no need to be hard braking just moderate and linear preferably going downhill and take into account other road users, safety first 👍

Some engine ECUs also need a software update - which Toyota dealers can do (but owners of a 108 or C1 - which use the same Toyota mechanics as the Aygo - have been saying that Peugeot and Citroen dealers can't so they get told they need a new ECU!).

I think you'll find the watch was analogue, digital requires binary coding to drive 😉 I love digital dash displays, speed is much more accurate, as opposed to trying to estimate if the speedo is on this mph or that. A quick glance is much less distracting!

On my Mk3 Yaris there is a cover missing on the underside of the drivers mirror, I think it was probably missing when I bought the car over 3 years ago but it hasn't caused any problems. I haven't been able to source a replacement but haven't looked too hard. I keep meaning to cover the hole with black electrical tape!

Around £20 for a 1 litre bottle on that well known auction site, almost £100 equivalent for 5 litre! The 5 litre 0W20 bottles of Toyota oil are now £40 there. I purchased 5 litre for £35, delivered about a month ago. Big increase.

It depends on the conditions you are driving in. If you are cruising down a flat motorway it won't make any difference but if you are in an area with a lot of hills then keeping cruise control on would have a detrimental effect as the car will do whatever it takes to maintain the set speed, even if it means going flat out uphill. whereas if you were driving the car yourself you would let the car loose speed uphill and may only increase the throttle by a moderate amount. I have noticed that if you push the throttle pedal all the way down there is a click at the end of the travel just like the kickdown position in a traditional automatic, I haven't tried it myself in driving but what happens if you engage this position?

I had a similar problem when they upgraded myT app about a year ago. I had originally installed the app when i got the car in mid 2019. At that time if i recall correctly it said to access all the data i had to contact the dealer to set it up which i did. After the dealer had set up their end they upgraded my phone app but apart from a new phone screen layout there was still some data missing. After 1/2 hr of their "expert" trying to solve the missing data he said it was probably waiting for the server to update the data and to do a few trips before registering!!!!!! After a few weeks still no joy so i uninstalled myT and then downloaded the app, installed it again and - hey presto. It worked including showing all trips since the visit to the dealer. Hope that helps you.

Probably the light cluster was off at some point, so he had no issue removing it. First time i took mine out, it was very hard to unplug the harness from the light cluster. After it was removed once, it was much easier afterwards. If screws are out, then it's only the plastic clips holding it, top and bottom. If those are out of the way, you can pull it. You might encounter some resistance from the gasket that's between the cluster and the car.

Personally, I would not bother. Yes I do have the sat nav on my Prius and it looks “pretty”, but I use my smart phone and Waze. It’s free, it’s fast, it updates itself, it has features that work that the Toyota one doesn’t.

Just for top up in an emergency you can use 0w20, cheaper and widely available. Regular check ups are best for any car, I do open my bonnet at least once or twice a week. 👍

Sat nav was a separate module that could be installed on the Touch and Touch 2 multimedia units. To buy new would be expensive, but you may be able to buy used multimedia units on ebay, etc with the module installed.

Yeaaa... I'm hoping I can get it for less than £25 for 1L!!!! But they have that exclusivity - As you say it's hard to source - Even Opie oils didn't stock it last time I looked! So far the car's used very little oil, just a tiny bit... not bad considering I have been hooning it around quite lot... I suspect people keep thinking it's a GR, then are disappointed when they realise it's the hybrid, then are surprised when I shoot off I haven't had so much fun driving since my Mk1 D4D!

If I was going to have one reconditioned, it would be the original.

Thanks, that is really useful to know. Those in the link look just the thing, except at 40mm would stick out. I need about 20mm. I will keep looking. I would fit them with a dab of medium-strength thread locker to prevent accidental removal, eg when using a screw-on inflator. And expect to renew one whenever a tyre is replaced - unless whoever is with the vehicle remembers to remove and save it.

plus check the heavy cables between the battery and chassis, and the engine and chassis, are secure and corrosion free at both ends.

strongly suggests the battery needs replacing ..id at least have it checked or just replace if its the old one and once its running again confirm theres good charge from the alternator...looking for 14.00-14.4v with the engine on

And rather than pay Toyota's exorbitant price for a pure platinum part, it must be for well over £200 each, buy a perfectly good and quality equivalent. e.g. Blueprint (Bilstein Group) ADT38387. Other makes available!

Hi Paul, I've followed this thread and your videos from the start and whilst I wasn't that keen on the touring car look, I have loved your Carina Journey......Hats off to you, Matey, you have done wonders! If this is really the end then that's OK.... A shame but OK. The only thing I'd add to that list is that I quite like automatic dipping headlights. Unfortunately like many here I don't trust the ones on the Corolla. Oh and all my cars now have to have a digital dashboard. Physical dials are just so last century 🙂

Daily use before as cabbie in London never had a single funny moment, just got use to it and it’s so helpful especially when you need to jump out and open the doors for passengers and holding an umbrella. Now with my car even not been a driver I still love the extra not to touch my key fob and keep it in the pocket for the whole time. Ok sometimes I start driving the car after been relaxing for a few hours and find out the key it’s not in my pocket, however the car was working as usual therefore I am sure that I will find the key somewhere under the seat in my next stop, and I always do so , for me this together with auto dimming rear view mirror and reversing camera are ultra important extras. 👍

Same as Joe here, no way I am moving away from Toyota hybrids drivetrain except full ev which has the same feeling when driving. Manual gearbox cars are in general more fun to drive as there is more engagement, this is the reason why Yaris GR is manual, but that has also negative sides too as been proven already some owners missed shifted a gear and blown their engines, something impossible to happen with automatic gearbox. Manual cars are really yesterday, it is good to have some on offer for people who drive very occasionally and really enjoy manual shifting, I do too but no way will pick manual over auto if can only have one car. And if my circumstances change and I have spare £30 k happy to spend on a new car as second car that Yaris GR will be the one because it’s manual, it’s awd and it’s turbo petrol. Born a legend. ✌️ 🚗

Talk about pre-historic, lol! The advantage is handing off a menial task to a computer which when equipped with a good box will do the job better than the human can, thus freeing up a bit more of the human's mental capacity for the more difficult job of driving the car. Manual gear boxes are last century and thankfully now going out of fashion. They should join the long list of automotive features that have been left on the scrap heap of history. One of the best things about the EV future is removing the need for humans to waste their time moving a silly stick around. Even the most determined of luddites will have no choice but to give up their manual gear shifting. Hands can now remain on the wheel, brains can now concentrate more on the road and what's going on around them. Old auto boxes had issues with hunting and upshifting inappropriately but CVTs do not have this problem. A CVT equipped car will always either be in a better gear ratio than a manual or the same one. They do a better job on the public highway and (as has been proven) on a race track. And actually having driven a modern 'conventional' auto I can say that computer control appears to have mostly fixed selection choices. The one I drove for a few hundred miles occasionally shifted down when I lifted off going round a roundabout but only a few times. I think modern gear boxes finally understand about engine braking so are less likely to change gear when you are decelerating.
