  1. Last Friday, I did my first long run in my 2016 Auris Excel hybrid hatchback. Nottingham to Anglesey (Wales) and back in the same day. Normally I commute in and around Nottingham, and get great MPG around town in heavy traffic. On this long run, the MPG surprised me. Here’s what I found: Going: 69.4 mpg over 148 miles. Empty car. 18C outside air temp. Air con off. Return: 67.1 mpg over 144 miles. Fully loaded car. 23C outside air temp. Air con on. Traffic was light (no jams) either way. Tyre pressures at standard load (33 PSI) on 17” alloys. Same route / roads both ways. I left home with a full tank of fuel. When I arrived back home I was down to half a tank. It appears that my MPG wasn’t really affected by the car being fully loaded, or the fact that that I had air conditioning on all the way back home either. Now, with my old car (a 2010 Ford Focus Titanium hatchback 1.6 TDCI) A/C on made a big difference to my MPG. Apparently not with my Auris’s auto climate control system. Until now, I only switched A/C on when I got hot. I’ll be using climate control and A/C more! A comfortable setting for me is Auto 21C with A/C on. Changing your usage based on past experiences of other cars, the Auris hybrid really is changing my driving style and mindset. Love it. 👍🏻

  2. Surely the manual is talking about ignition states, i.e. accessory 1, accessory 2, ignition etc

  3. In answer to your topic title: Auris hybrid sensible buy? It’s a YES from me! I bought mine less than 3 months ago. Delighted with it so far…

  4. I can remember the time before computers were around, if you ordered a new car you just waited until the dealer phoned (on a land line) or posted a letter (no emails) and said you could collect in 5 days time. Everything was so simple then. 😀

  5. Thieves most likely had to release your car on a hurry and the car went down at speed and hit the jack is my opinion what had caused the damage, my advice is to have look for any damage to the cat lock or exhaust underneath. They do not lift up the cars to see if there is a cat lock or not, they lift up when they try to steal., I have watched enough videos to understand them how they think and how they work and from what they usually afraid. Someone perhaps had seen them and start shouting and they decided to give up and run away, not risking been caught with runaway car full of equipment and product (stolen cats).

  7. today i found away to change the horn on a facelift mk2 auris without removing the bumper since the grill doesn't seem to be removed easily. 1) i removed all clips holding the plastic panel between the grill and bonnet locking plate 2) turned the panel through 90 degrees to gain access behind the grill 3) removed original horn. 4) fitted new horns see photos below i hope this may help others

  9. You won't get a chassis number until the build is underway, and you don't need one its the dealers responsibility to link your order to your MyT account. If they have still failed to do so then I suggest a compliant to the dealer principle and customer relations

  10. Except that it seems some of us do not normally get even that. As per my previous post all I normally see is a graphic of the door opening and closing then an empty dash apart from the mileage. I've only ever seen that message in response to me pressing the Start button when the break pedal isn't pressed. Here's a video (sorry about the quality - it's hard enough getting in as it is without holding a phone while you do it): https://photos.app.goo.gl/3SZR8JUXsjyZ1iik7

  11. Thanks Joe. I had no idea the Power button did so much! In the year I've had this car, I press it with foot on nbrake, to power on the car. Or not with foot on brake, to turn on accessory mode, and that's a rare moment. That's all. On the Normal, Eco, etc, I have those options in the center console along with the auto gear shift. The car knows when to be in EV mode no matter the gear setting. The B setting, yes, I use it frequently on some of the steep hilly minor roads in my vicinity where the engine does much of the braking and charges the battery at the same time. Handy!

  12. I've also seen that message sometimes, but not sure what I'm doing to trigger it. Maybe pressing a pedal or some other button? "One thing not too clear - the manual on page 254-255 talks about changing power switch modes" Ah, right, so you know in a Normal car with a key, you have Off, Aux, On, Ignition - That is what that means. So, with the car off, if you DONT press the Brake and hit the Start button, it will go to AUX (Radio/Infotainment starts, 12v system is powered e.g. lighter socket). Press it again and car switches to On; Fuel pumps are powered up, main computer is initialized, dashboard is on, stuff that doesn't work in AUX like power windows now work etc. However, car cannot be driven yet. Pressing Start when you're also pressing the brake is like Ignition.

  13. If you have written proof that they aren’t required, then as long as you are carrying it with you, it should be no problem. But probably advisable to have something in the appropriate language from an official source just to be on the safe side.

  14. Thanks for the advice and feedback chaps. It is being delivered on Friday. Not to worried about springs. I have changed plenty, front and rear in my time. 👍

  15. Did you ever get around to checking? I remembered just now when putting the car back in the garage - the cut-off looks dead flat to me; no uptick to the left (or right) at all ...

  16. One thing to watch out for on Gen 2 Prius, especially early Gen 2s (2004-2006), is broken rear suspension springs. They seem to fail quite frequently, but there's no indication when driving. Most people find out at MOT time. Other than that, they're pretty reliable. I had a Gen 1 Prius, which had the 1.5 litre engine like the Gen 2, for 9 years and it had done 163,000 miles when I sold it. It still ran like new. After 100,000 miles, oil consumption had started to increase. Towards the end of my ownership, the level had dropped to MIN about 7,000 miles after a service, and adding 1 litre of oil kept it above MIN for the 3,000 miles to the next service.

  20. I know not the same maker but when I ordered my Focus in 2019 the dealer never got the chassis number until about a week before delivery.

  21. Thanks for your thoughts, Tony. I've had a good look underneath the car with a bright, mains driven inspection lamp. I couldn't see anything that had been knocked or tampered with. No scuff marks, saw marks, scratches etc. The only damage (apart from what is in my original photo) was where the underseal had been damaged. The sill has a crease - pointing downwards - and the underseal on the crease had been squashed (by their jack, presumably) and it had cracked. I peeled and picked off the loose stuff (only a few millimetres) and coated it (twice) with Hammerite Car Body Underseal using a cotton bud. Also used the underseal on the damage to the sill in the photo. Contacted the Workshop Controller at the Toyota dealer I use with my photo. He said no structural damage would have been caused as the sill is very, very strong. I can't see the point in (even) getting it fixed. you don't see it until you are on your hands and knees on the ground. I reported it to the Police and received an email saying there was nothing they could do as there was no cctv. (But if I was traumatised by the event I could contact...) Really, just wanted to be included in the crime statistics.

  22. I did end up with ebay stickers Joe, some yellow ones in fact. The dealer I used is the one that is closest to me (10 miles) and they collected and returned the car without additional charge. My preferred dealer is 30 miles away, I used the nearest one for convenience at the time, it was their disinterested attitude (and fibs!) that annoyed me as I also had 2 new tyres fitted at the same time, spending some £525 with them in total.

  23. I received a small Catlock pack with two window stickers, a plastic ID card with the unique code now marked on the catalytic converter and an instruction card on how to register the cat and to check the registration on the ISR register. I checked the ISR website and the code didn't appear as being registered, so put all my details in and registered it myself to the vehicle. I understand the idea is if the cat gets stolen, you report it to the ISR so that if the cat is then located by police, its traceable as having been stolen off your vehicle.

  24. I wouldn't bother with the stickers. Why give them the heads up on what security you have. They then know if done a Catloc before what tools they will need to remove. They will look under anyway, hoping no security. James.👍

  25. You most certainly should have received the window stickers. I had a Catloc fitted to my old Prius - and received stickers. I've very recently had a Catloc fitted to my Auris and received the stickers. I'd recommend you contact the Toyota dealership again and ask for the name of the After Sales Manager. But - not sure what use the stickers are. As you said, you can buy stickers on eBay, so they don't prove you have a Catloc fitted. It only takes the thieving scum a few seconds to look under you car - stickers or not.

  26. Most interesting. I have a 2020 Excel HB bought end June last year and I've never experienced what @AndrueCdescribes - it's always get in the car, sit, foot on brake and press the power button. That's the procedure described in the PDF manual (the one you download) on pages 252-255. I don't see any reference to configuring it to behave autonomously. Or am I misreading everything there?

  27. I have 40,000 miles tracked on my fuelly account since I got my 1.8 hybrid Corolla new in May 2019. Worst tank was 51.45mpg, best tank was 67.56mpg. Fuelly is showing my tank average over 93 tank fills as 60.0mpg. Not too shabby, really.

  29. Of blocked filters and empty tanks: One day we were driving from Strasbourg to Paris. The car would not start and we had the bonnet up and checked the carburettor. The chamber below the filter mesh was full of a rust red sediment. It was probably the result of 80 octane fuel in Turkey. We scooped it out as best we could and then reassembled the Stromberg carburettor. The car ran but not very well. Along came a Frenchman, stubble beard and wearing a suit. He had no English and we had inadequate French. He offered to help and quickly adjusted the carb and everything was fine. He explained he was a BMW mechanic. We refuelled with French petrol and set off for Paris. No speed limits in those days and we ended up racing a BMW coupe with the hood down and a mademoiselle in the passenger seat blowing kisses at us (etc). I think we averaged in the high 80s for the 300 mile journey and I guess 24 mpg. We ran out of fuel in Paris - right on the top of a hill with a petrol station at the bottom!

  30. Aparently it is Eurolites diagram 168 for the RAV4 with LED headlights - same as the Corolla: Thanks for asking - I'll need to get sorted if we ever get allowed back onto the continent. Though, TBH, and don't tell anyone, if I can avoid travelling at night I simply leave the stickers in the glove compartment ... 😉

  31. I thought that the dealer/garage standard was 'too much for anyone without an air gun to undo'.

  32. Never understood this as the fuel is supplied from the bottom of the tank. Plus you've your fuel filter too before it gets to the engine.

  34. I changed mine with a pair of Hella for VW, they sound great and I didn't fitted any additional relay, the car has one fitted by factory and it's enough; since then I hadn't any problem...

  35. Fortunately my Auris came with a space saver spare wheel, which is a somewhat of a rarity nowadays having looked at many new cars over the past year If you get a full on blow out or have your sidewall slashed / split, a can of slime and a compressor won’t be much use. Also, the cigarette lighter sockets in the Auris can be prone to popping fuses if overloaded (by a compressor say) then you really are up the creek! Spare wheels are worth their weight in gold.
