  6. Far too true. I remember my daughter telling me about a girl who used to be in her class. About five years after my daughter finished her A levels they bumped into each other. During a brief chat, it came to light that the girl had four children and lived in a council house. She drove a new car, and had never worked a day in her life. My daughter referred to her, and these are her words not mine, as a Baby making factory out to claim benefits.

  7. Mine must be due to the local wine festival then. I have panel gaps varying by several mm around a rear door, and the hatch is misaligned to the left, resulting in it missing contact with the rubber seal on the right. All my VAG group cars had narrow and consistent panel gaps around all the doors, bonnet and hatch. The AWD model presumably has the bilevel boot floor, obviously much sturdier than the item used in the Icon. The Icon has no roof rails, so they have filled the grooves with rubber strips which are so loose fitting I expect them to be blown away in a strong gust of wind. The drivetrain in a car built by VW would be ideal. I had planned to keep the thing long term, as my last car, but I think this will be swapped for something which doesn't offend my precision engineering career sensibilities. As I am now retired, and don't need a car for work, I might well go back to one of the properly engineered classics of my youth, like my much missed Volvo Amazon, which is probably still driving around today!

  8. You're right, I will speak to them, but I use emails as well when dealing with any issues involving warranties. From previous experience, you need proof in writing. I have previously had dealers deny that I had reported a fault during the warranty period because I had no email trail to prove it. They even refused to accept a phone video of a touchscreen fault because the car registration wasn't visible in the video!

  9. Just thought I would do a little update. Car seems smoother - pulls stronger. Pick-up response is better. Not tried top end of rev range. I doubt much will be noticeable at that end - Aygo feels zippy enough at that rev range. It is the pick-up lower down the range where you can feel it tracks more linear in a stronger smoother manner. Noise = no change. MPG = better. I proved this by going on a run on the same road route I have used many times over and over as I love that particular route (30 mile route all in to and back home). The best before I could manage 72.5 MPG (I know don't ask). With the RON 99 Shell V-Power I managed 74.5 MPG. This is the MMT (multi-mode transmission) version too. No temperature difference. Maybe tires were slightly inflated to a higher level but I have done that before too. Best thing however was the value. Putting in £30 worth of Shell V-Power gave me 262 miles on the trip computer. Now if I put in the ordinary Shell E5 I would have got about 278 miles. So a loss of only 16 miles. I was expecting a lot worse. Worth it for the better additives, better MPG and running performance I think. I wonder if Shell still do the RON 99 V-Power discounts/points/vouchers?

  11. Greetings from Sunny (yes, really!) Oldham. Like someone reincarnated, I've been here before! I had an old Aygo, and got lots of advice (cured all the water leaks!), but when SWMBO* gave up driving when her licence expired at 70, it seemed pointless for us to have 2 cars, so the Aygo went to We Buy Any Car, and my daily driver became her Motability Skoda Karoq (super car, BTW).Now that is due for replacement, and we (she has the final word, it's her Motability car) have decided on a Toyota C-HR Icon with Tech Pack, which was affordable and has (most of) the toys we like. Our lease is due for renewal about now, but we've been told September 1st as a provisional delivery date. So I'm back! 68-y-o, Scotsman, retired Nurse, Grandad to 18, carer for SWMBO*; guitarist, modelmaker, avid SciFi reader, and cider enthusiast. *SWMBO= She Who Must Be Obeyed.

  12. Filling up our tanks will probably go up to four hundred quid a tank , which will be quite funny 😂😂 Seriously, we all know this is a huge scam to groom us into total digital currency when the government control your money and tell you what you can and can't spend your hard earned currency on. So they will probably find some way of getting UBI back from us (eg fined for sneezing on a spider by accident)

  13. You need to install an ad-blocker. I use uBlock Origin and the site loads without any adverts in sight. Same deal with YouTube. I had no idea that YT had adverts until I tried viewing it from a holiday cottage over their TV. I've detested all forms of marketing and advertising ever since I read The Space Merchants as a callow youth. I don't know how anyone can browse today's web without an ad-blocker. It's worse than trying to watch live TV (I haven't done that since Sky released Sky+). It is still possible to live life without ever seeing an advertisement and doesn't require all that much effort 😉

  16. Unless accident damage better not to spend any money on and part ex for newer model as is.. Often even after refurb job is done the traders may argue and find other things to lower the price. You may push them more for leverage with telling them you walk away or ask for greater discount on the new car. Used cars when traded no need to be perfect, and those that are indeed does not get much better paid for. All it matters to the trade are low miles, service history, 2 keys, and no writes off. 👍

  21. The D4Ds were made in Japan, which made them a bit annoying for parts, as there were a lot of parts that were different to the French ones, e.g. the brakes, and even the wing mirror glass which I discovered when I tried to get a replacement from eBay only to find it was for the French one and nobody sold glass for the Jappy-built models, so I had to get it from the dealer... (That made me a lot more careful around hedges ) This is a top tip - I don't know how common this is, but at least round here the dealers are useless with e-mail and you're lucky if you get a response. Phone is slightly better but usually ends with them saying they'll get back to you and then... not. I found if I wanted something done this side of the rapture, the only way was to go in person and even then I'd bring a book, such was the average wait time. The only dealer people I've ever e-mailed/messaged and gotten a reply from within a day have been PartsKing and a woman from a remote Jemca office called Sharon who has literally been the only top-marks customer service experience I've had with my long association with Jemca (She actually called me back! And replied to e-mails! And chased down the unresponsive dealer phones! And actually knew basic stuff instead of having to refer to other people!! I was in shock! )

  23. Thanks everyone for helpful suggestions. Finally had time to take it in to my tyre place, and yes, that was the problem and not a wheel bearing. Both rears had flat patches that were causing the noise. They were getting near the end of their life anyway. New ones fitted, end of noise even on quiet surfaces (so far; longer trip on Sunday/Monday so we'll see once I've done a couple of hundred miles). Possibly been under-inflating them slightly: they checked my pressure gauge while I was there and it was over-reading. I was pleased that the tyre place didn't try to charge me for the time they spent inspecting and road testing, which was nearly an hour.

  27. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, in terms of MK2 vs MK3 I'm happy to pay extra for a MK3 as I despise center dials! My other half used to have a Mini with center speedo, but at least they put a rev counter + speed display in your line of vision. Maybe its a love / hate thing. Also the rust concerns me a bit with a MK2 as others have said, I dislike welding as much as I like center dials. I'm yet to see anything concerning on a MK3's MOT history regarding rust. Hard swerve on the VAG cars too, other than an old Golf we've had nothing but trouble with them. Looks like 4k will get me a higher mileage MK3, might extend budget a bit if right one comes along with less miles. Would prefer an SR but they seem to be a tad more expensive, and realistically a TR may be better for rough country roads with its smaller wheels / higher profile tyres. Anything other than the usual stuff to look out for when test driving a MK3? (obviously will check clutch, obvious signs of corrosion, coolant + oil levels)

  28. This diagram from the Toyota owners manual shows the jacking points for our model. As well as the four side jacking points you can use a Trolley jack on the two central points shown. The rear point looks very unlikely as its just a small peice of metal hanging down - see pic. Whatever you do, ensure you use a pair of axle stands incase the jack fails and place the engne in gear /chock the front wheels when jacking the rear up. We now use this type of stands, much easier to use that the ones you adjust with a pin bar. https://www.toolstation.com/axle-stand/p83498 Lots of one man brake bleeders on the market, find the Gunson one very good.

  29. No holes drilled in the bodywork at all.Used one existing hole in the top metal cross bar above the headlight ( only accessible by lifting the bonnet) If you pm me with your email address I will send you pics of the finished thing fitted to my car.I did have pics of it out of the car that I sent to several members who asked at the time but have now deleted them. Seriously it is not difficult to make once you see it.I think it was all made out of 400mm x 6mm mild steel bar. Welding and drilling involved but will be really easy if you have access to a fab shop. Regards Terry

  30. Since 1999 I have had 9 Lexus whist my Lady has had 6 Toyota. My AWD Cross is no. 7 & I have posted pictures of mine on this Forum & my Panels are perfect. My Boot Floor is solid & the Front Doors clunk without any modification. The Red body colour is stunning & the Build Quality is excellent. Toyota NVH is no match for Lexus but is on a par with most cars bellow 70 mph. Tel

  31. No alignment problems with mine and although I questioned myself when coughing up £920 for paint, I must say it is very good. I’ve been round every panel on mine including the doors and added Dodomat which has improved the sound deadening and also the weight of the doors. They now shut with more of a thud and that occasional clang like a dustbin lid has gone. I’ve had 2 Lexus and they are a different story. The attention to detail is off the chart so regardless of what the haters say, I will have another in a couple of years. Going back to the Cross, the useless AWD motor (not my words, I like it) actually supports the boot deck so you could put a very heavy load on without it bending. I don’t care for the tonneau cover either. It’s not so much the weight of it but a proper cover stops noise coming out of das boot.

  36. The concerns about crime and UBI along with who is going to pay for this doesn't take much thought. As I have said in my own posts, people must take notice that the age of digital currency is not far off so paper money will be a thing of the past. What's going to happen to the black economy markets that include drugs and theft that have produced cash in hand for stolen goods and fencing etc.,? It will be gone. All money transactions will be made via digital means, everyone will have a digital account so any and all transactions will be identified as to the source they originate from. There will be no hiding how that money went into the account . Multiple accounts in different banks will no longer be available, neither will any accounts be able to be opened due to identifiers through technologies overseen by AI may include finger print, facial recognition, retinal scans to name just a few. But don't worry, they have had a long time to work this out so it will be secured technology. UBI has been talked about for years and the idea is you will become dependent on the state for income but that will eventually be based on a social credit score. See China for how they operate this. Crime will eventually become a thing of the past as well. Anyone caught stealing may not even go to jail, they will have their access to their digital account frozen of funds or limited until they recover social credit status. This punishment alone will stop them committing crime. Just imagine no money and no means of obtaining it. Of course, they can steal again but who will they sell to and who is going to buy when the state can freeze their accounts and reduce the social credit score and know where the money came from. This is not Sci fi or a conspiracy theory, just look what's going on with 15 minute cities, low traffic neighbourhoods, digital currency to name just a few. There is so much that is going on behind the scenes and so much is being created to distract the public while this is being implemented. Most of this sold under the 2030 and 2050 agenda's. No one wants to see this happen but the belief that we live in a democratic country has been slowly eroded over the years. The recent pandemic showed what a government can do and how easy the masses conformed. It is reality and it is happening.

  39. I remember, years ago, when my dad had a 1947 Pontiac. There was a small chip in the paint and you could see the bare metal underneath. The point of the story is that the paint on this car was thicker than the metal used on cars today. This was original paint too. The car had never been in an accident or resprayed.

  40. I've always liked the idea of things like this as it's a step toward the sort of post-scarcity utopian future things like Star Trek and Ian M Banks' Culture series portray (Rather than the dystopia we currently seem to be headed towards!). Like, if everyone had a UBI, do you think it would reduce crime? Why would you go around stealing stuff and mugging people if you didn't need to? There's always a few proper crazies who are just of a criminal nature, but I would imagine it would drop significantly and the money saved from that alone would off-set a lot of the cost. It's all in the implementation tho', and how sustainable and abuseable it is... Where's the money going to come from? And it builds a dependence on the government which is an institution my faith and trust in is at an all-time low. If you become a non-person in that environment, how can you survive? And how would you stop a mass exodus of people from countries that don't have a UBI to ones that do? Lots of potential, for both good and bad...

  46. This RAC article quotes research by 'What Car?' that E10 is 3% less efficient than E5 with smaller engined cars most affected, so if the price difference between E10 unleaded and E5 super unleaded is less than 3% it could actually be cheaper per mile to use E5 super unleaded (from September 2021)! What is E10 fuel and how will it affect you?
    1 point
  47. So I can just pull into any BP petrol station (or indeed any Esso or Shell) and put any petrol premium fuel in? I don't want to damage anything. At the moment I am getting 64 MPG from the Aygo and I am curious to see how premium fuel compares. Also keen to know what effect it has on engine noise and performance, if any of course.
    1 point
  48. A single bad experience of using higher octane fuel isn't the best to use as an example. Generally higher octane premium fuel such as V-Power, Ultimate, Momentum, etc have better additive packages than standard fuel - so should help keep the engine cleaner. I use premium fuel when we're going on holiday which usually means 300 miles of motorway driving, plus on the odd occasion I use supermarket fuels, I use premium rather than standard. Not interested in whether or not it gives better economy. Also in the UK, from September standard fuel will be E10 and premium will remain at E5. For those who want better economy, the premium E5 should give slightly better economy than the E10. Previously on these forums, some owners who regularly use premium fuel think their cars do run better. Subjective - possibly - but at the end of the day use whichever fuel you want to, there are no rights or wrongs in this.
    1 point
  49. I really cannot see the benefit of using 98 octane when 95 is recommended. All I would be doing is empty my wallet that bit quicker. I do however put an additive into my petrol tank, Archoil 6200-EU. 250ml treats up to 2,500 litres, so very economic (5ml treats 50 litres of fuel if used regularly.
