  1. Ice and snow prooved no problem. It felt sure footed and brakes were fine but I did allow more distance. I cannot say they were better than the Tokyo's because I never had cause to use them in the same conditions. I am happy with the Cross Climates but like insurance you just hope you will never really need to test it.
  2. On all of my Hybrids Gen2,3,4 and Auris Ts I got significantly poorer mpg in the winter than summer. In very cold weather it could be as much as 4 mpg. If you have just swapped to X climate tires this may explain why you are seeing a rise in fuel consumption. After a couple of months on the X climates I am still showing over 60 mpg average which is comparable with the Toyo's. I always run my tires on either HS fully loaded or +2 pounds in the summer and standard in the winter. This may account for poorer winter mpg. The X climates on 15" are quieter and give sharper steering. Not had to try snow yet but in heavy rain give more confidence. I was (as some may remember) very annoyed Toyota would not let me have the Auris TS Excel on 15 or 16 wheels. I was not happy with the economy on 17". My Gen 4 is fine on 15" and as I expect this to be my last car did not wait to wear the first set out. I love the RADAR and the whole feel of lightness. While it is not as practical as the TS it is a much better drive. It still ticks all my boxes. The only things that would improve it for me was if the paint was more resilient to stone chips. I have added a Toyota bonnet stone guard (brought back from Canada) that helps but the front and even the roof have a number of annoying chips. I would also like to get rid of the white bits inside but not sure piano black is any better. Like others the Auto lights can cause confusion to others who think you are flashing them but having looked at the competition would not swap it for anything else. PS The white mark on the bumper is sunlight
  3. Narrow eco tyres will return good fuel consumption but one must take care in wet or frosty weather. However, I successfully drove a morris traveler rear wheel drive on 145x14 tyres through snow up the the hubs ( 6 or7" deep) not because the tyres were all weather or studded but simply because there was good tread on them, they were slightly over inflated and they were narrow and displaced the snow and slush more easily than wider tyres. So .... buy cars with narrow tyres, make sure your pressures are ok and forget about all weather tyres in UK, they are a gimmick, they doubtless do work but in the most part , are surplus to requirements because narrower tyres would probably do just a good a job. I drove a SAAB 96 for over 20 years In all type of weather BUT like your Moggie Traveller the narrow steal wheals had narrow CROSS PLY tyres. These cut into the snow with stiff side walls. Good for snow, sand but poor for rain or tarmac. Once the deep tread got clogged they just spun. We need all weather tyres which will always be a compromise and I am very impressed with my Cross Climates in the very very heavy rain of the past couple of weeks. The SAAB and old Traveller struggled to maintain today's motorway speeds, nostalgic drivers say " they don't build em like they used to" It was rare to keep one for 100,000 miles or get 30 mpg and who can forget the joy of laying on your back to grease half a dozen nipples every 3,000 miles. On a trip from Cyprus to UK through Turkey, Yugoslavia and Europe in 73 i had a complete set of Gaskets slave and master cylinder rubbers for clutch and brakes and a whole list of spares. Now I could do the same trip in half the time without any preparation at all
  4. Just back from my first long trip on the Cross Climates. Over 515 miles the Av mpg was 64.1. I would like to say it was fast motorway but M6 and M5 speed restrictions kept me below 60 and often below 50 for long stretches on the journey south and M1 M6 back were equally slow,. The weather on a trip M4 Reading M25 to Hemel was atrocious, a boat would have bee, n more suitable, but the Cross Climates felt sure and safe. In wet very weather the steering feels much more positive.. Overall I am pleased with change. I am still experimenting with pressures, currently I am a bit over the 35/36 but I need to check out my gauge for accuracy. As an aside from some of the replies some members still think will can compare mpg figures for 17 inch rims with those on 15 inch rims. The Prius brochure shows 94.1mpg for 15inch vs 85.6 on 17inch rims .Combined mpg. Nobody can expect anything like that in real life but the comparison matches my experience. I changed the Auris TS Excel partly because Toyota insisted it had to be run on 17 inch wheels to get insurance. The fuel consumption was way down on my Gen 3 Prius and more comparable to my Gen 2.
  5. Quick update on the Cross Climates. Tyre pressures are critical to fuel consumption. Michelin have confirmed the only information they have is 36/35 psi. When I got home after about 20 miles my fuel consumption was about 63 mpg (similar to the TOYO) I checked the pressures and my digital gauge read 37.5 /38.5 I dropped the pressure down to an indicated 35/36. Over the next journey fuel consumption increased to 57. Yesterday I checked with a an old analogue gauge and found all about 3psi down. I increased the pressure up to 38/37.. Today consumption is back to 64 mpg over 25 miles. Noticeably they are much quieter, ride is better, and steering is sharper than the TOYO. Next weekend I will be doing about 600 miles round, trip mostly motorway so will share the experience. I am not sure what Toyota mean by a "Full Spare" but 32 psi all around does not seem correct to me, although I have always dropped 4psi if heavy snow is forecast, for better grip.
  6. I changed today to the Cross Climates. They do seem quieter and the steering feels sharper. Too soon to say if mpg will be adversely affected. Both the Toyo and the Michelin are 195/65 R15 91H. I feel we may be getting into the 17 vs 15 discussion again. The circumference of the tyres is the same it is just the depth/ width of the tyre that changes. From experience over 12 years and 4 hybrids I can assure you that tyres and tyre pressures make a huge difference to mpg. Even the brochure for the Gen 4 says Urban mpg 97.4 for 15 vs 85.6 for 17. My averages have never got near either of these but I regularly see 80+ on 20 mile trips. Summer was 62.7 winter maybe 61 but often trips are less than 5 miles and the long trips fast motorway, neither of which are ideal. I have never known what the correct pressure should be as the handbook is ambiguous It says 32 psi with a full spare and 36psi front 35 rear without. I have a spacesaver but thats not quoted.. I know that after a service my pressures were always down. and I put up to the label inside the door pressures again. 2.5 /2.4. maybe that is why I was not happy on the Toyo . In the past when I changed from the OEM tyre type I always consulted the manufacturer of the tyre for pressures and invariably found they were not the same as the manufacturer of the vehicle. Michelin say go by the label in the door. By the same token in the past I always went 4 psi over or the fast setting for better mpg and less wear (Pre Toyota). A friend just swapped his Rav diesel for a Rav Hybrid and was moaning about the fuel consumption. When I went out to look at it he had huge Black wheels with very low profile tyres. He was completely unaware of the affect wheel size had on mpg.. Style over substance.
  7. I am looking to replace my Toyo Nano tyres on my Gen 4 Prius for Cross Climate Tyres for the winter. There is a lot of choice for the 195/65 R15 but Michelin Cross Climate+ seem to be the market leader and recommended by Honest John. Has anyone tries cross climates of any make? After 4 Hybrids on the trot I am aware that size and choice of tyres can have a dramatic 8 mpg affect on fuel consumption but I have always had the original OEM on them. The TOYO are adequate in the dry but can loose grip on greasy roads under uphill acceleration. I am not sure they could cope with snow.. The Toyo's are also noisy (not as bad as the stupid 17" Dunlops on my old AURIS Ts) but give good average fuel consumption (65 summer 61 winter).. Any advice on best choice. I know the ideal is Summer and Winter tyres but I don't have room to store two sets.
  8. My wiper did drag until I fitted the deflector so you are not alone. Toyota never admit to a problem. The lack of an off for the headlights could cause a bad accident as it could be seen as a come on flash. On my Auris the lack of digital speed readout could have been easily fixed with a firmware update and not allowing customers to pick wheel size across the range are just a few of Mr T' s faults. I did read somewhere there had been a fine in Japan because the steel used was bellow spec. The capping on the roof rails is very soft I would not fit a roof box or even put it through an auto car wash, but I doubt Toyota would admit a problem.
  9. If you use proper polarised glasses the Hud is of little use no matter how bright. LED displays are also affected by polorised glasses. That said my presciption "drivers" are superb. My optician said I did not need them but when I went for an MGV licence medical 70+ the doc advised them. He said insurance companies will insist over 70s drivers have an eye test and try to wriggle out of paying claims against older drivers. The drivers have every coating you can think of and I wear mine as sun glasses out of preference to my Ray Bans
  10. I agree with all of PeteB points. Rear headroom doesnt bother me, the Auris TS was far more practical but the Gen 4 is still the best Hybrid to drive. In Vancouver there is a huge choice of hybrid and EV vehicles but Toyota's are far and away the most popular. Most Taxis are Prius V which are huge and great in the back. In Grand Caneria the Prius Taxi all run on AutoGas. The PriusV that picked us up had 150K on the clock all on Gas and was still like new. For me it's the auto pilot features that make the Gen 4 so special. Regular 68 mpg trips, it is quiet, fast and real pleasure to drive. My driving glasses are polarised so the HUD is hard to see but the big digital Speedo keeps me legal. The Sat nav is a pain but so rarely used I can live without it. The Dab is nowhere near as good as in the Auris but in N Wales it's better than the FM for BBC. On most cars the radio is only used to mask the rattles, no rattles I enjoy the quiet. Nothing is perfect but this for me is as good as gets. I just wish the body work and paint were more resilient. Reflections have been an issue on all my Hybrids but on this it is mainly the rear dash cam that's affected. The dash cam fitment was better in the Auris, but like insurance you hope never to need it. Dash cams are not for entertainment, or "bling" as long as they show what happens the quality doesn't matter. In 4 years my Lukas Duo has only caused one issue. Now I follow the manufacturer recommended guide and reformat the chips regularly I do not expect another. Sure I would rather it was hidden from view completely but I have not found any that are. Installation and results for both Auris and Prius 4 are on this site somewhere. I still do not like the white or the piano black, the glove box is too small and the boot too shallow, but I can forgive all that for the pleasure it gives. Finally I have found my "keeper". Odd that although the Lexus IS, Gen 2, Gen 3 and Auris Ts all fitted my garage the Gen 4 was a problem. I had to remove a pillar from the centre of the wall so I could open the door. The others parked either forward or aft of the pillar without a problem.
  11. All cars and definitely lorries should have this, it really is magic. Touch the cruise, adjust how far you want to be to the car in front, set your speed and relax in the knowledge that if he does something stupid you will stop. The sensors, tell you if there is cross traffic brake warnings stop you hitting the end wall of the garage, and anything else, self parking, have not tried it yet even on my old Auris, but I am assured it works. This must be the most advanced generation of vehicles yet. Not sure I would want self drive, but this is very, very good. When I read about cars and lorries tail ending each other on motorways I wonder it's is not compulsory.
  12. My Prius is now just over a year old and I still love it. Living in North Wales it still maintains an exclusivity, locally I have only seen another two. I get a buzz each time I drive it and still just go out for the pleasure of driving. Over the year I have added a few bits, fog light surrounds number, plate trim, scuff plates and at last a stone and bug deflector for the bonnet. I had to bring that back from Canada as could not find one here. see pics. Stone chips have been a bug bear of both my GEN 2, GEN 3 and Auris TS and within a month I had a nasty one on the front of the bonnet and one in the centre of the roof. A badge hid the bonnet one prior to the deflector the roof one still bugs me but nothing can be done to hide it. That brings me to a warning about the body work. A few months ago I noticed a series of dents in the roof rails above where the centre pillars joined the roof. Both sides so at first I put it down to internal welds. I have a friend who does dent repair so got him to look at them. He got them out ok but can not work out what caused them. My theory is that when I leaned across the roof to get to the chip I must have leaned on the roof rails. Br warned do not put pressure on the sides of the roof, the metal is very soft. Since the deflector I have not had more chips behind it but the bumper still gets them.

    Hi As you can see from the pic I have changed to the Gen 4 Prius. I moved the Lukas Duo Dashcam to the new car. After the Auris this was not too hard but the Prius results are not as good. The rear window angle causes reflections, the front mirror mount means the camera has to be mounted offset. Video is aceptable but not as good. I did have my first problem at the beginning of the year. Despite the Lukas having battery cut off protection built in I suffered a failure to start (dead battery). After a jump start I noticed the camera was stuck in Format mode even after the ignition was off. After a forced format it returned to normal. When the ignition is off the camera should power down with "see you" message. As I have the camera out of view behind the mirror to minimise distractions I missed this. When the memory chips are full they automatically format and carry on. If the vehicle is powered off while this is in progress the camera does not auto shut down. Lukas advise you to format monthly and monitor the recording regularly to detect errors. Memory chips do not last for ever, but in four years this is my first fault. I did post the Prius installation but it is very similar to this. No experience of other cameras or power magic as the Lukas has the features built in.

    My Auris had privacy glass and if you look at the installation report you will see pics from the rear. No problem. The settings allow for heavy tints or clear and the polarization filter can be adjusted to reduce most sun glare. The Prius rear is not do good however due to the steep rake of the rear causing reflections and lens glare but I am not taking artistic home movies. If something hits me from behind i will have evidence. the important bit is to be able to download clips to VLC and take stills of decent quality, I find it easier to do this from the chip loaded into a PC or Android Tab. With dash cams people loose sight of what they are for.

    I have fitted a dash cams to my Auris TS Hybrid and moved it to my new Gen 4 Prius. My cameras are a Lukas duo front and back. I have written it up and put pics of fuse taps and where the cables go both on this forum and dashcamtalk forum.. I would not recommend trying a cheap cig lighter installation. I do not like cameras that are obvious from the outside or suction mounted, or with screens that cause distractions while driving. They should be "black boxes" viewed when only needed. The Lukas can be viewed via an App on phone or tab but this is only really of use when setting it up. Look for large capacity SD or micro SD. Chips (mine has two) and capacitors rather than rechargeable batteries. The windscreen is a harsh, hot environment, Even the best dash cams need looking after, the chips need re formatting occasionally and I try to update a check the recordings every three months. In four years the only problem I have encountered was when I switched off the engine while the chips were reformatting. The battery in the car went flat after about a week. Now when I switch off I check for the " goodbye" sign off on the camera. Off course if I had reformatted the chips monthly, as recommended this would not have happened. Read up on how they work, decide what you want them to do, and what owners recommend. Remember Toyota sell cars not Dashcams, computers or even good Sat navs. If you cannot fit it yourself you probably won't be able to fix it when it goes wrong so the closest reliable specialist is the best.
