  1. Quite honestly even with my pc volume setting at max here, I can hear very little of the sound that you are investigating. The problem of using a mobile phone for this sort of investigation is that many modern phones use a noise cancelling method to reduce background sound - which is just what you are trying to record! Some phones allow a setting to turn of the noise cancelling mode...

Since the issue seems to be repeatably showing that its solely distance related, it suggests it could be associated with the number of wheel revolutions and the way the vsc uses the abs sensor information from the wheels to determine differential rotation speeds . I suppose the wheels/tyres are all the same diameter? An under/oversize wheel would clock up less / more revolutions over 10 miles which might show up as the VSC system not being happy with the sensor information its receiving...
  3. In cold weather the gear box oil viscosity creates a drag effect slowing down the engine - with clutch pedal down this drag is reduced and engine speed rises somewhat. When engine and gear box warmed up the drag effect is reduced and engine speed-change effect is reduced . Normal in winter in most cars I've owned.

  5. Seems that my diagnosis based on a "scientific" approach using spectrum analysis of the engine sound was rather a red herring. If possible I would still like to have another sound recording of the engine, running without the serpentine belt.
  6. My guess is that you'll very likely get some sort of warning, but the engine only needs to be run for a minute or so. If possible, can you make another recording of the noise without belt.
  7. Hi Johan, I managed to extract just the audio from your video+sound clip and have looked at the frequency components (spectrum analysis) to see if there are any clues. Among the general clatter the strongest components seem to be at around 430 Hz, 660 Hz and 1060 Hz. Since these frequencies are much higher than the the rotational speed of the crankshaft (at idling, in the region of about 15 Hz or so) it seems most likely to me that the noise is not from the belt driven items but points more strongly to the valve gear and timing chain as suggested by MIke169 .
  8. I'm not familiar with this engine, but I have a suggestion - if it is possible can you remove the drive belt for the alternator to ascertain if that changes/ eliminates the sound. That test would show if an alternator bearing is the origin of the noise Also, if that experiment doesn't help, tell us if the sound is rythmical and/or changes with engine speed.

Since several of you have commented on the comment I made, I feel I ought to expand on it a little: The list has 14 car makers 10 are all higher cost than Toyota (inc Volvo after 3 yrs). 2 have min/max costs that straddle the Toyota cost. There are at least 3 ways of looking at the ranking: 1 Taking the two straddlers at their min costs, Toyota is 4th from lowest of the group of 14, ie in lowest 28.6%. 2 Taking the two straddlers at their max costs, Toyota is 2nd from lowest of the group of 14, ie in lowest 14.3%. 3 Taking the two straddlers at their arithm

  12. Australia? The OP is in Argentina. I believe the same loss of vehicle value when written off by the insurance company occurs in UK and elsewhere. The high cost of replacement parts is for all new parts - maybe some of these can be obtained in good condition from another crashed vehicle at lower cost by a small repair garage. But probably the insurance company would not want to do this. As suggested, the cost of buying the vehicle from the insurance company and having it repaired by a small repair garage should be investigated...

  14. Time and time again, a new/prospective owner refers to "the dreaded EPB problem" but there seem to be very few factual reports in this forum of this actually occurring. So where are all the prospective owners getting their information from about EPB problems?
  15. My EPB is currently ok, so not seeking any advice. But I am mystified at the mention of £1000+ compared with the figure of £220 given by Scott. Is the £1000+ figure a genuine quote by Toyota or a pessimistic guess?
