    Dodgy 12v battery?

It cut out today at some lights so I've ordered a genuine battery, will be here tomorrow.
  2. I noticed recently my engine running more and more even in the warm weather. When starting in the morning the engine would fire up within 30 seconds. I did a battery check in the secret menu on the mfd and it was showing just over 12v but under 12v on load. Today waiting at a red light it cut out! As the engine usually stops when stationary I never even noticed until the lights changed and I started rolling backwards! Of course all the repmobiles had their hands straight on the horn, the lights had been on green 5 seconds and nothing had moved. I looked at the dash and there was just blackness, I hit the brake and pressed the button and luckily it fired up. I'm hoping it cut out because of low voltage so I went to our local spares shop and he had a ring round. These things are like rocking horse poo with hardly anyone stocking them, eventually he located one and it should be here tomorrow. £190 genuine Yuasa ouch! I'd seen equivalents on ebay for 35-40 quid and wondered why the wild price range however reading this article now I know. Will update.

    Collected my car today

I've owned it a few months now and am getting more used to it. The actual driving is just second nature now but I still think the mfd is a pain although I know my way around it now. Yes the steering wheel buttons are good I just wish you could put the heating on auto without the ac kicking in and then having to switch ac off with the mfd but it's only a minor issue. Probably my ocd acting up.

    Hello from the Black Country

Just a quick update. I am so impressed with this car, I just wish I'd bought one a while back. No. 2 son likes it that much he's just bought a 13 plate Lexus ct 200h. At the moment I'm getting 66-67mpg mostly round town and one or two 30 mile runs a week. I've only filled the tank twice, I got 452 miles on the first one and at the moment it's showing 350 miles on half a tank. Incredible. I fitted some Osram Nightbreaker headlamp bulbs which took about an hour to do and were a bit of a fiddle but the lights are now really good and no one has flashed me. I fitted my dashcam but need to tidy the wiring although it's working ok. I also have one to fit to the rear. I'm also going to fit some reversing sensors as my neck is crocked with arthritis and it's hard to look back. I may have a problem with the 12v battery being old but I think all else is ok.

    Dodgy 12v battery?

Well the car is running great after nearly three months of ownership. On this tankful of fuel I've done 315 miles and it's still showing half full so I'm still well impressed. My son likes it so much he's gone to look at a Lexus hybrid today.😊 The only concern I have is the 12v battery. Last week we went abroad, when we got back my mpg information on the multifunction display had all reset to zero. We always leave the car at airparks and I know they will jumpstart a car if the battery is down to move it from the secure compound to the collection area. Also when I originally bought the car the garage had to jump it to start it up. Although I know it had stood a long time Recently every time I use the car the engine will fire up for a few minutes even in the warm weather. The diagnostic test on the hidden screen showed the battery voltage to be over 12v but dropping under 12v on load. With the engine running it was charging OK. Does this sound like a dying 12v battery? If so I'll replace it. Thanks.

    Collected my car today

Well nearly a month and the Prius is great. I filled the tank yesterday having done 452 miles at 51.55mpg so I can't complain, that's nearly twice as much as my Citroen was doing. It's very comfortable and very quiet and when there isn't a local loon glued to my back bumper I practice my hyper mileing. A couple of things annoy, not having speed sensitive auto locking and the MFD is a pain, almost to the point of being dangerous in that I have to take my eyes off the road to set things like the heater or radio, I would much rather have a switch or knob, sod the aesthetics. But generally speaking we are gelling quite nicely, I just wish the weather would warm up so I didn't have to drive with a big coat on. I've ordered some Osram Night Breakers to beef the lights up slightly, they should be here soon.

    Collected my car today

Thanks all, I 've done another 10 miles this morning and am now at 56.7 mpg and all this round town. I think I'm becoming addicted.
  8. I collected my Prius today about lunch time, it was a bit odd at first but I soon got used to it coming from an automatic. I drove straight to the petrol station as the gauge was flashing "R" and put 44.09 litres in. I sat in and prayed I'd remember the start up procedure but all was well. I'm quite impressed, especially with the unearthly silence at low speed and after 11 miles of quite heavy urban traffic and just a couple of miles dual carriageway I'm up to 50mpg. One thing that I am puzzled by is the heating and ventilation screen. Is aircon on all the time or only if I press the AC button? If I set a temperature and a manual fan speed is that just heating/cooling but not ac? Reading through the manual it keeps stressing to not drive with ac on unless it's necessary. One other thing I'm sure I read that you could see your old service/maintenance info at Toyota. Can you do that online?

    Hello from the Black Country

Done the deed today. I bought a silver T4 60k miles 06 plate one owner full Toyota history. I took it on a test drive and it was very nice, first time I've driven one. It was spooky pulling away in total silence and when up to speed it went very well. We also tried an 07 plate Spirit in black with 46k on the clock which I thought would be the better car but it wasn't half as nice. It was noisier, bouncy and had some graunchy noises. Maybe broken springs? Anyway we went for the T4 which I think was the better car. Pick up in the week.

    Hello from the Black Country

Fifties would be nice. Anything more would be a bonus. My main aim is low overheads, I just want to get my basic costs down so I can plan ahead.

    Hello from the Black Country

They're only fetching 500 quid for series 1 even really nice ones. But it has to go, its the combination of high insurance costs and ved plus low mpg. It looks like diesels are rapidly being seen as the bad boys and I can see ved rising on older cars as well. If the Prius has high insurance but low ved and high mpg I can live with that and I'll be doing my bit to save the planet. I'm looking at a T4 in a dealers and Spirit from a private owner but with more miles. Hopefully the money should be in my account next week.

    Hello from the Black Country

Actually you mentioning the Auris, one of my questions was going to be, in my price range of up to £6k there are a few later Auris's (Aurii?) and gen 3 Prius's listed but with 150k+ mileages. Is it best to stick with a low mile gen2 Prius or look at later but high mile models? I know these cars will do phenomenal miles but surely stuff must wear out on them as well.

    Hello from the Black Country

I don't drive all that briskly if I can help it now I'm retired. I quite often used to see what I could squeeze out of a gallon coming home from work in the early hours after the late shift. My record was just under 66mpg driving like Miss Daisy in my 1.4td Skoda Roomster. My present Citroen is an 04 plate C5 exclusive estate 2.2 hdi auto so not exactly the most economical car on the planet, but I've seen 50mpg+ at 60mph in cruise on the motorway. However around town I usually see mid to high twenties!

    Hello from the Black Country

Hello, Well apologies but I've been a naughty boy and didn't follow through and buy a Prius. I did get rid of the Venga and used some of the proceeds to get a block paved drive. With my depleted funds I then went and bought a Citroen C5 as I've been a Citroen owner for more years than I care to recall. I still have an automatic Citroen BX which is a keeper at the moment. Anyway I recently renewed my insurance, when I got up off the floor I realised that this can't go on, £280 I think for ved and nearly £400 insurance so pushing £700 before turning a wheel, now I'm retired I have to cut costs. I will have about £6k to buy something else and have decided to seriously look for a Prius as the cheap ved is obviously a big draw although I'm not sure what the insurance will be. I've seen an 06 T4 not too far away for reasonable money, with 60k on the clock and low mileage. One of the pics shows the hv battery monitor and it's down in the purple on about 2 bars. Is this a worry and are there any little checks I can do if I look at the car as to its general state? Anthony no I haven't had a test drive so not sure what to expect, although I've driven many traditional auto's before.
