  1. Highya all. Am new to the forum after having just purchased a 1988 corolla GTi. Looking to restore her to former glory. Am driving a 91 Celica GT as my daily run until I can get the Corolla up to standard.

Hello, just read your post about your 'new' Corolla Gti, I've got a few parts laying about still from I had mine. I've got about 7 standard alloys that could do with a refurb ( most without tyres ) couple of doors/wings etc. I sold a fair few bits on eBay though by all means list anything you need and I may be able to help, I'm in Enfield N London, regards Jerran

  2. Hi my mate is after a good condition AE92 engine and can anyone shine some light on how much bhp they have. Thanks

If you need an engine I have one for sale, still in the rusty Shell and still starts, only missing radiator and alternator, starts fine with a jump pack. £200 and it's yours and you can have the car it's attached to, I'm in North London

  3. Hello, has anyone got any rear shocks for a Corolla Gti preferably uprated ones that they want shifted ? I've had my car lowered though the rear shocks are starting to clonk a bit and the car is a little bouncy as the shocks are past their best. I'm not looking at spending fortunes and while you're in the garage looking at your old AE92 Gti bits what else you got that could be of use to me ?

    I'm in Enfield North London

    regards,

    Jerran

I've got an entire gti that had new rear shox fitted not long ago I want 200 quid for her, the engine starts but it's not drivable as the engine needs new bearings so is knocking bad.

Have you got any pictures of the car at all ?

  4. Hi my mate is after a good condition AE92 engine and can anyone shine some light on how much bhp they have. Thanks

They have about 127 bhp when new, though depending on how they've been treated prob a little less by now

    Is'nt their a 170bhp version

That will be the supercharged one I believe that wasn't officially offered over here, some times found in a MK1 MR2 ( again, not officially sold over here ) I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong !

  6. What other bits are you looking for?

Nothing springs to mind apart from the shocks ( excuse the pun ) looks like I'll be getting a new set this weekend. Have got a whole car for bits too so got most stuff and broken a few. If someone had a stainless exhaust that was in the way it would be useful, apart from that I think I'm ok. Mine has been lowered and everything else is factory spec as I prefer them that way

  7. Sounds like a plan to me though don't stress the mounts too mcuh when you jack up the gearbox and place a piece of wood between the jack and the gearbox when your doing it, just a case of try it and see. If you need any Corolla Gti bits I'm in London too

Hi there thanks for the reply just finished the work didn't go quite according to plan there is one bolt that is so close to the gearbox that’s its nearly imposable to get off, there’s a plastic lip nearly flush with the bolt can't use a socket had to use a screw driver and hammer to loosen then use fingers.

second error was the filter pipe in the bottom of the sump stops the sump coming off (unless u disconnect the exhaust from the manifold) so you only get 2" or so clearance to un-bolt the pipe fine on the way down but an arss on the way back up when you got the liquid gasket covering its and you got 4 bolts and 2" clearance.

I am actually looking at the moment for some polyurethane rear bushes can only seem to find rubber ones sold complete with the bracket £120 per side change them last year for MOT and 1 bush has gone already :(

Where are these bushes on the suspension ? want some second hand ones off my breaker I've got ? ( for much less than £120 you've been quoted ) they're not poly ones though, just the standard fit

  8. Hi there I got a 1990 GTI a few years ago now done a lot of work keeping it on the road had to replace the seals, filler neck for the fuel tank, rear shocks, discs, pads, the Idle contorl valve, map sensor, calipers, bushes, radiator, wheels, CAT 1 alarm got it re-sprayed last year the list goes on.....

got an oil leak now from the sump got the liquid gasket and set to work removing the sump... there are 2 bolts that I can't get to there’s a brace across the bottom of the engine bay directly below wich make it impossible to get a socket or anything on them.... the brace is supporting one of the engine mounts so I can't remove easily without a hoist which I don't have.

my question is this if I was to support the weight of the engine with a 1.5 ton jack from the bell housing and undone the mount and the brace would this be the easiest way or am I missing something simpler?

any help would be very much appreciated

  9. Hi,

Just wondering if anybody can give me any pointers on the 1991 corolla GTi?

How reliable are they at high mileage? Say 140k.. also, are there any common faults to watch out for.. distributor , headgasket etc?

Me and a mate are looking at doing a 2500mile trip in one (potentially) and Nurinbergring (spelling) would be on the cards.

So far we have narrowed the cars down to the corolla (depending on what you guy say), or the 1989 civic/crx 130bhp version.

Me being 6ft 4 concerns me alittle aswell, how much room do the corollas have in them?

    Thanks for your help :D

    Hello

The Gti is prone to a bit of rust, exactly wot redbullae92 said but very reliable in every other way!

Its one of few cars that u can floor it and when u stop it feels like it wants to do it all again!

The selling feature over the crx will be the interior, the dash is sexy and the seats are very comfortable and i

think they where designed by recaro (correct me if im wrong guys!)

I am a fan of the crx but back the Gti on this one!

Done two track days in mine and it still wants more ! A trip to the 'ring will be a walk in the park after you've done oil & filter change and replaced the cambelt just to be safe. Never had a CRX, not as many about and not bought by the same customers when new, though I think they like returning to nature just like a Corolla

Hello, after having at least 15 of these pass through my hands the biggest issue is rust. Sunroof's, tailgate, rear arches and rear sills in front of rear wheels. If these areas are sound you'll be fine in my opinion. Mechanically they just seem to keep going no matter what abuse you throw at them, only checks I could think of would be normal stuff when looking at an oldish car ( smokey engines, rumbling bottom, gunge in the rad end etc etc ) though never had these issues on a 4AGE lump. Radiators can be a little delicate, handbrakes seize if not used often, apart from that buy one and enjoy it and let me know if you need any spares if you do buy one.

  12. Thanks for the reply.

They look really good and I have just requested a quote from them and they seem to be posting very reasonable prices for a regas!

I think that mine are punctured though so I might have to just buy new ones depending on the damage.

Pretty sure I've got a pair of these in my Corolla parts pile, have you got a paypal account ? £20 for the pair

Thanks for the offer but I dont have an account with PayPal so its a no-go!

Is there any other way that I could buy em off yer?

Send me a cheque ? Send me cash if you like ? Let me know and I'll mail you my address,

    regards,

    Jerran

  14. Hi, was joining motorway 1st, 2nd then 3rd and a loud bang and loss of drive, inspecting car this weekend all linkage looks ok and seems to be operating (although no gears engage). Going to get mate to give a me hand during the week to remove the gear box.

Any one had this happen to them or knows what might have broken?

Also any tips for replacing the gearbox?

    Thanks

    Phil

On the surface sounds like a driveshaft has popped out though you won't know the full story until you get under there at the weekend, does the clutch feel like it still operates when you press the pedal ? Or has the pedal 'gone' any giveaway noises prior to this happening ?!

  15. Can't you nick one from another rolla?

nah I cant I dont have the car anymore :crybaby:

Sent you a PM. Im breaking a twinny.

Dude you live too far away man :( anyone one in London breaking one?

    Jerran

Yep, got both sides. Next ?!

  16. Has anyone got an exhaust for my GTi, standard or after market desperatley need for MOT. please let me know

Do you need a centre section ? Got one of those off the car sitting in my stock pile, genuine toyota stamped part too. Plenty of other Gti parts available, Jerran

    PS am in North London

Would you happen to have a tailgate without any rust by any chance?

    And a sunroof too?

Have got a very solid tailgate with glass from a non gti, any good ? send me an e-mail address and can pass over some snaps,. Sunroof, no, I'm keeping the good one to go on my road car. Have got a whole car plus spares galore

  18. Hi everyone,

After stripping out everything other than the top half of my dash, I realised that I had not removed the steering wheel which is a bit of a !Removed! because there doesn'e appear to be any screws or bolts that I need to undo to remove it. :(

I need to fit my boss kit and MOMO steering wheel after christmas so could anyone with any ideas on how to remove it please tell me them.

    Help is appreciated as always,

    KPARRIS-JONES

Behind the steering wheel are a couple of small phillips screws, remove these, this allows the horn push part of the wheel to come off and reveal the 19mm nut, remove this and wiggle gently, pull too hard and you'll be wearing the wheel on your face

  19. I've just got a 1989 1.6 GTI but I HAVE to get a new radio and sound system for it but there doesn't look like there's a slot for one.

Is it possible to get a new radio for it?!?!?

If anyone finds anything could you please tell me where to look.

    Cheers

This should be easy, right in front of the gear lever is the radio slot ( above the ashtray ) to fit a stereo to these you need to remove the trim that goes across the top of the dash in front of the steeering wheel, this L shaped trim also holds the air vents on the dash too, remove all this remembering to disconnect the wires to the ashtray. A modern DIN sized stereo fits in her without the need for a cage, you should have some sort of mounting bracket to mount to the stereo that then is held in place with four ten ml bolts that fits in this slot. If it wasn't so miserable outside I'd take some pics for you

  20. I have in my pile of Toyota bits the T Bar MR2 glass roof panels, rear window and the two quarter glass panels to the rear of each door, anyone want to come and collect them before I trip over them again ?! PS they didn't leak when they were in the car

A small donation to a charity of my choice would be nice, I'm in Enfield N9

That is a generous offer B)

I would take them off you as I work in Enfield but I already have a spare set of T Bar glass in the loft! To be honest , the T Bar glass is probably the only thing you'll be able to pass on as people occasionally break them or scratch them. The rear and quarter windows very rarely get broken.

    Regards

    Sky Insurance (Mk1 enthusiast!)

No problem, I thought that would be the case. Next time I have a garage clearout they'll be off to the dump, don't fancy a spare MR2 engine then do you ?! sold one on eBay at the weekend and as yet nothing from the winner. I've got two spare lumps so one could do with going to good use

  22. Hi I have a 1988 'F' Reg black Toyota Corolla GTI.

In need of work, still has MOT (this week) and tax, run every day.

My mother has had in from new, I know sounds hard to believe!

She has just purchased new Auris and wants the old corolla to go to a good home, It also has a full service history from main dealer, in Berkshire. Plenty of miles on the the clock though but that it what corolla's do best. (350k!!!!)

No replacement parst all original. No body kits or anything. Good servicing by Toyota Main dealer, and a very careful mum!!! No accidents either.

Car has been on drive way for last 18months, due to company car available. Only run at weekends, and holidays as it towed a small trailer. MOT will expire this week, tax will probably be returned to DVLA.

Don't want to hide anything from anyone it is suffering from rust to all arches, interior in need of attention, but it has been used and looked after.

    £200.

Sorry to hi-jack this one though did your Gti sell or is it still available ? Have you any photos and where in Berkshire are you ?

    thanks J
