  1. When you get the tyres fitted, make sure they move the rears to the front and put the new tyres on the rear axle. This has been shown to be safer in a skid and it allows the most worn tyres to be worn out (and replaced) first and reduces the average age of the tyres.
  2. How do you go about running a wire under the carpet? Do you need to take the seats out and lift the carpet up?
  3. I always get the impression from my local dealership that the Aygo is the poor relation in the Toyota range. I have spent a lot of money with them over the years but the car has never been cleaned while it's with them and they had the brass neck to add £1.84 plus VAT to my last service invoice for topping up my washer fluid which had been done by me the previous day. Any parts I've needed to buy have cost twice as much as the local Citroen and Peugeot place and have BOTH sets of parts numbers stamped on them. Luckily, there is a local garage round the corner from me where the owner/head mechanic seems to be an enthusiastic and conscientious sort of fellow, so based on that and recommendations of friends and neighbours, he will be doing my servicing work in future. If it's a matter of trust, I think that Toyota expects its customers to return time and again like obedient meat-puppets and pay whatever they ask for servicing on a mechanically simple vehicle. I don't trust Toyota that I am getting the best value for my money when I spend it with them though I'm sure the work they do is up to standard. Loyalty, nowadays is only ever punished, so you need to be a clued in consumer and vote with your feet and wallet.
  4. I wouldn't bother personally. I read in a magazine a few years back which tested spoilers in a wind-tunnel and found that most aftermarket and OEM spoilers (the Porsche 911, Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru Turbo were the only exceptions) actually increase lift and drag on a car. Car companies know this but sell them, because, to the customers a spoiler that actually works doesn't "look right". You'd be better off putting the money towards something else.
  5. Oops, I just read that the Aygo has fully electric power steering rather than an electro-hydraulic system. On the internet, you never know when your fiercest forum opponent is just a cat sleeping on top of a computer keyboard.
  6. Have you had a mechanic check the electric motor of (or the switch controlling) the power-steering pump? That might be a cause of a problem which might lose you PAS and discharge your battery. If everything else in the car is working normally, then it mightn't be the ECU which is giving you the problem. The Aygo does not have a power steering pump!....It is an electrically assisted power steering using an electric motor....No pump or fluid! If the motor has failed the steering will be very heavy to turn, although not impossible, but quite noticeable....Driving without power assist for over 4 months, must have built up your arm muscles! Have you had the fuse checked on the power steering motor? I would not expect to have to change an ECU to cure a power steering fault......although there might be a Toyota Tech out there that would confirm that? I thought that the Aygo has an electro-hydraulic system whereby an electric motor powers an hydraulic pump which powers the steering rack. In a traditional PAS, the hydraulic pump is powered directly from the engine, but it has been found that an electro-hydraulic system such as found in the Aygo is more energy efficient.

I believe the key-fob has an RFID chip (like an Oyster card or similar) which doesn't require any power to work which allows you to disable the immobiliser to start the car even if the battery is dead. The key is designed to be periodically opened so that the battery can be replaced. Checking for water damage shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't break anything or damage any wires or soldering inside.
  9. I don't like the front bumper and grille, I think it looks fussy and old-fashioned and probably will be more expensive to replace or fix after a prang. The Citroen C1's front looks the best of the three and the 107 the worst IMO.
  10. That's quite low power for a petrol Aygo but about right for a Diesel one. The colder weather (denser air) might be a factor with the torque. More info please.
  11. Financially speaking, buying a new car and keeping it for only a few years is probably one of the worst decisions you can make. But there are other reasons for buying a new car, for example if it is a company car or you are on Motability. All things being equal, I would hold onto your Aygo and save your money. We live in uncertain times and a shiny new car could be like an albatross around your neck if your circumstances change for the worse (Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid). Also never buy a new model in its first 12 months of production, it will be full of glitches and bugs to be worked out; furthermore, wait and see what the SEAT and Skoda equivalents are like. Edit to add: The VAG 3 cylinder engine doesn't have a balance shaft; instead, it uses a counter-balanced crankshaft which is a far cruder technology. The VW's engine simply will not be as good as the 1KR-FE we all know and love.

  14. That's exactly what I'm saying and I'll fist-fight anyone who disagrees! Seriously though, I don't know about RAV4s but I have made it past stuck 4x4 cars including Audi Quattros, BMW X5s and an Alfa-Romeo Brera V6. Small fwd cars such as the Aygo have skinny tyres and a lot of its weight over the front axle which is good for traction.
  15. I agree. Slithering up steep hills past 4x4s spinning their wheels in my summer tyre shod Aygo always makes me chuckle.
  16. The Aygo doesn't have a switch on the passenger door as cost weight saving measure. I believe there is a topic in this forum that explains how one can be fitted though.
  17. Did you have any problems with the radio code? Is there a radio code for the Aygo or does it not need one because it's a unique shape?
  18. Using a car for short distances only, where the engine doesn't get to heat up properly is not very good for it. The various fluids need time to warm up properly. Also, if the metal of the engine block and head expand is allowed to expand with heat and contract with cold too often, it can lead to problems. Motorway trips are actually the easiest thing on the mechanicals that you can do in a car; even at 70mph, the Aygo's engine is spinning at less than 3500 rpm. Warming up the engine properly with gentle driving and then indulging in some spirited driving every once in a while is not a bad idea either.
  19. You could probably find a new or "good-as-new" part from a car-breakers or a wholesaler and have it fitted in n independent body-shop for much less than MR. T would want. Here's a cautionary tale: My brother was recently involved in a fairly minor shunt where his car needed a replacement bonnet, front wings, bumper and lights and the other chap needed his tailgate and rear bumper repaired or replaced. My bro was at-fault and decided to keep things out of the insurance company system and had his own car repaired independently. The car was back on the road in under 2 weeks, (better than new for about £700 all-in whereas the other chap sent him a bill for over £2000 for parts and labour etc. because he'd got it fixed with the dealer who took over twice the time to fix damage that was much less serious.
  20. What time of day do you check them? I only inflate mine when the car has been sitting for a few hours. The manual's stated 32 PSI is, I think too low. Curiously, they specify 34PSI for driving over 100mph which is something that can only be done in a standard Aygo either downhill of with a tail-wind.
  21. It must be the way the car is driven because I have only ever used Contis and I have been averaging 20,000+ miles per tyre with the most worn ones on the front axle. And the roads where I live are like the surface of the moon.
  22. There is a difference between getting past an overworked MOT examiner and complying with headlamp regulations. AFAIK, Xenon HID lights are required to have automatic leveling and built-in washers. These would probably not be worth retrofitting. I've always found the Aygo's headlamps to be quite good, (which is saying something, given my eyesight).

  24. Only 769 left on the road How Many Left Website versus 74,674 for petrol versions. The fact that the diesel Aygo was outsold by about 100 to 1 says nothing about its qualities as a car. I expect the ratio to drop in favour of the diesel over the coming years. My petrol Aygo has done over 50,000 miles with nothing more than routine servicing plus some replacement consumables. I'm not planning on changing the car any time soon.
  25. The problem with the A65 is that it gets used as a rat-run by huge lorries, clogged up with slow-coach Sunday drivers admiring the scenery and suicidal bikers who want to crash into it at 100mph.
