  1. Just curious what others are getting around town. On the motorway I am getting around 35-40 mpg at around 65 mph.
  2. I replaced the brake master cylinder yesterday on my car, but it says use only Dot 3 fluid ( I realised that later).. I put Dot 4 in, will this damage the seals in the master cylinder?
  3. Is is worth replacing just the seals ( rebuild kit for £22 pounds ) or should I buy a new one from Toyota for £110?? How hard is it to change??
  4. Im going to be blunt, but the guy is an idiot! New disks come with an oily film to stop them rusting up, I always wipe mine down with thinners or engine cleaner to get the oil off. The surface where the pads and handbreak shoes should be oil free for maximum friction.
  5. I just did my rear shocks earlier, what a pain in the ***** that was, had to remove all the boot trim and part of the rear seat just to get access to the 3 bolts holding the shocks. But having driven the car I can say its much better now over the bumps. I will do the fronts as well just to match it all up. I would bounce the car and see how much it bounces, with my new shocks I cannot bounce the car, where as with the old worn ones you could bounce it all day. Sometimes on the shaft you can see oily mist, but not always if they are gas. If the car has done 80k+ miles you may as well change them anyway. Go for KYB or Monroe, they seem to make some decent shocks. www.camskilltyres.co.uk seem to sell KYB at a very good price. Good luck.
  6. hi mate i would clean MAF sensor + throttle first. Cheers/Igor Silly question but what does toyota refer to as the MAF sensor? I can see things like vacum control valve, intake air control valve would one of those be it? it is Mass Air Flow meter cheers/Igor Thats a mass air flow meter... I see nothing like this on the car... If it's like the 1.8, it's built into the air filter lid. (similar to the one in the previously posted link from caveman) There is no MAF and no EGR that I could see... anyone with a 2.0 VVTi can confirm???

  9. The engine is playing up, basically once the engine is warmed up, ie 1/4 to 1/2 way mark the car will not idle and just cut out. Its fine when cold. Any ideas what it could be? Coolent temp sensor possibly? or Some kind of Idle control Valve?
  10. 5L of fully synth for £16 would be a serious bargain - are you sure? Also, check the API/ACEA etc. classifications against what is recommended for your car & not just the viscosity. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-VAUXHALL-5W-...208183001r29593 special offer now at vauxhalls 4x5ltr for £48 plus vat. Just found out that the 5w30 is made by Fuchs and is a group 4 PAO far better protection than the mineral oils.
  11. Have you got a list of the ratios?
  12. Can anyone confirm if both the 140bhp and 190bhp celicas have the same 6sp gearboxes or if they are different? Many thanks
  13. I finally managed to start the car up today.. very odd.. took a while to get it going, so many times it was almost about to start, i kept crankign and finally it did. Now when its cold its idling at around 11-1200 rpm then once warm goes down to about 600 and its idling all over the place .. and even stalling. I dont think this engine has a air flow sensor.. symptoms are of a similar nature to a knackered air flow meter. I will do a compression test, just to make sure the rings are ok, but should they be worn, might just rebuild the engine. Has anyone rebuilt a 1AZ FSE before?
  14. The first generation Avensis imo is an excellent car if looked after. You can say its a better car than a mondeo, vectra, laguna of the same generation. Only the Primera might rival it on relibility.
  15. Thanks, But Vauxhall are doing 5w30 oil for £16 and its fully synthetic.
  16. hi mate if the 'taxi driver' image worries you than you can try looking at the baby lex good luck wahid Its not got a great image.. immigrant drivers using them as Taxi's But really I dont care, I got mine to be a work horse, and for the price there isnt much out there for the same money....
  17. Went down to my local toyota dealer on the weekend and he recommended a 5w30 oil at £18 inc vat. But he was not sure if it was semi or fully syn oil. Can anyone confirm what kind of oil it is? Thanks
  18. I ask becuase on many cars, vauxhalls, nissans as you turn the ignition the fuel pump you can hear it start up its normal. I dont have another toyota avensis to compare with.
  19. Anyone know if the fuel pump should make a noise on start up??
  20. Should the fuel pump make a noise the first few seconds the ignition is turned on? I know in some other cars you can hear the pump start up. On mine I cannot ehar anything....
  21. I have been using pure cellulose thinners in My Skyline GTR for a number of years now. Not had any issues. the mix is typically 96% Toluene, 4% Xylene. I add about 20% to a tank of V power should typically raise octane to about 104. Not tried it on a NA engine but should improve drivability but to get most gains you would need to map on that mix.
  22. Does anyone do a Decat pipe for 1az-fse engine? Might be worth a few extra bhp...
  23. Most cars have 1 sensor, or 2, but why 4???? One of mine is duff also and needs replacing. How much are they?
