Engine oil recommendations

 Share

Devon Aygo has recently supplied the following information on oil requirements:

"The issues over which oils are used is caused by a European law called "Block exemption" the same law that states that manufacturers can't insist on main dealer servicing, also stops Toyota from insisting what oils are used by anyone wishing to service a car including their own dealer network. All Toyota are allowed to do is list a set of specifications that the oil used must meet they can also list a "preferred" oil. For example I have listed below the requirements Toyota have for the mkiii Prius, a car that has caused a lot of posts over the oils that have been used during servicing. This info is taken from Toyota's Service data sheet for European Prius mkiii only!

Preferred option:
0w20

Other listed options:
5w20
5w30
10w30
15w40
20w50

These grades above are listed by Toyota as they meet the following required specifications:

API grade SL or SM multigrade engine oil
API grade SL “Energy-Conserving”. SM “Energy-Conserving” or ILSAC* multigrade engine oil.

API grade SN "Resource Conserving" is an improvement over SM and is backwards compatible.

Toyota can only require the oils used meet the minimum specifications above. So long as the oil used meets the above the oil grade is not enforceable.

At present Toyota have "asked" but cannot enforce the dealer network to use the following,

New 2020 Yaris Hybrid & Yaris Cross Hybrid 0w8

New Models introduced from 2019 such as Corolla Hybrid, Rav4, RAV4 PHEV, Facelift Prius, C_HR, Yaris 1.0 (4th generation), Aygo and Aygo X use 0w16

Great list :) I used the Castrol website to determine the best oil for my car, 0w30 was recommended I assume this is safe for my 1.4 vvt-i corolla 07 hatch? I've been using this for the last 5yrs replacing the oil every 10thousand k's religiosly

This might seem a silly question but how do you know that you have a DPF unless you get under the car and have a look (or ring the dealer)?!!  I have no details with the car to show any service history regarding a DPF. I'm concerned that I buy the right 5w30 oil for my 2012 diesel Verso and don't risk wrecking the DPF (if I have one) with the wrong spec oil.

My Avensis 1.8 Valvematic preferred oil is 0w-20, with 5w-30 the next best.

Every search I make with Opie Olis and Euro Car Parts for example, all come up with 5w-30 grade oils!

I know that 5w-30 is a more common grade, but if the engine is "better" on 0w-20, make it available on the list.

I think it wouldn’t harm and instead might help the noisy four banger on the rav4 I was thinking maybe I could add some lucas oil aditive to quiet it down a bit on startup, after warming it is not as loud.
