Hi mate,

go with the manual and use 5w/30 it's right for the car and you won't go wrong with Mobil oil, by the way you can get 5ltr of Mobil from Asda it's on offer right now at £22.00, unfortunately your car takes just over 6ltrs so you will need to buy extra. Maybe buying 2 would be your best bet as 1ltr bottles are a rip off, anyway you can use the rest for topping up .

Regards Pete.

Whilst googling oil on Thursday night

I spotted a google posting which proclaimed that Asda were selling

5/30 semi synthetic that was ideal for the Ford Zetec under their own brand name that had been reduced from £9 for a 2 litre bottle

down to £4.... after further investigations and going and comparing the specs of the Mobil FE

and the Asda own brand ....the specs by the way are identical i purchased

3x2 litres for a cost of £12

I have since gone to my owners manual to double check and this oil looks ideal

it meets all the requirements

btw they sell the oil in 5 litre bottles at £14 with the current large discount

so to add the extra 1 litre would have cost £18

what do you guys think?

would you buy/leave the oil alone as its not a major brand or try it

remember Asda buy this stuff in and just rename it

it prob comes from one of the major oil companies or maybe the likes of carplan or comma type oil suppliers

who knows

hi

before i got the auris i had a mondeo and purchased a 25 ltr drum of morris oil made for fords ie the exact spec as as Mobil fe which all ford main agents use.

as i had a half a can left i rang morris tec office to check if it was suitable for the auris engine

,

ive always found them very helpful. i was told that the oil i had was not ideal as Mobil fe is not SL/SM API grade

it would be no big diasters using it but they would not advise using it.

morris make three different fully synthetic 5w -30 oils two others are suitable for toyota petrol engines.

anyway i purchased Mobil ESP 5w - 30 from asda as its far the best (on test) and and stays in grade a lot longer than Castrol EDGE. plus as i am near asda no postage to pay, and the price very much cheaper than what Halfords ask for it.

.

All own brand oils are made to a budget, so they just scrape by the specification tests, rather than exceed them. Normally they are ok for normal use, but there is a reason (other than paying for the name) that the branded oils are better

my mechanic mate recons fully synthetic is a waste in my motor

because the mileage is high 102000 mls and also because its diesel he says its just a waste fully synth in a diesel

and also Mr T in Liverpool said fully synth is not necessary as its too thin and watery (if you get my meaning)

so I've put the Asda 5/30 semi syth in and will run that until the winter then I'll change it

was in home bargains today and they do a Gulf 10/40 semi synth in 4 lts for £8.95

so that's a premium brand for a good price obviously you would have to buy 2x4lts but for £17.98 that seems fair

Your mechanic is correct that you don't need a synthetic, but to suggest that you would as good performance from a more basic oil is just wrong. Also synthetics are not thinner. If a oil is a 5w-30 or a 10w-40, it is that grade. That is a measure of viscosity, nothing to do with the chemical make up of the oil. As for not using fully synthetic in a diesel, that's wrong too. Most new diesels are designed specifically to run on synthetic oils.
