Lost Keys

Hi guys,

I was wanting to get some information, i lost my car keys at work , i was only given 1 pair when i bought the car 3 weeks ago.

I had a lock smith look at the car and they told me it had a transponder in it so they would have to take the computer (ECU??) out and reset it then program the new keys to it. I decided to rather take my car to a toyota serive place and they informed me that they cant reset the computer and that they have to order a whole new one and put it in the car and then program it - does this sound right?? I

My car is a 2004 Toyota RUNX S corolla.

cheers and information or advice will be greatly appreaciated.

Here in the UK the latter is the case - where the ecu cannot be reset, and as far as I'm aware, if all the keys are lost, the ecu has to be replaced and new keys programmed to it.

In the UK, some car insurance policies include provision for replacing lost keys - so check your policy to see whether you have something similar.

There's a lesson there - never accept a car with only one set of keys.

Who knows where the other set are, could be in the hands of a criminal somewhere...
