Engine Revving High

Hey, been recently having issues with the engine and/or gears. When the car is at complete stop, and i mildly kiss the gas pedal (no FF stuff), it just doesn't seem to be able to find gears. 1st gear is not an issue, it gets going alright, but then the revs keep climbing and climbing till i hit about 4000 rpm, before it clicks and gears up to 2nd. Higher shifts have not caught my attention as much, but probably there's slight lag there as well. Car has an automatic transmission.
