Afternoon all, first post so hello everyone.

I've recently purchased a 12 plate Auris TR with the 1.33 petrol engine. It's a lovely car, probably the best I've owned. I've had twelve cars altogether, I bought this for the reliability of the brand and good fuel economy.

My partner says it's the first "sensible" car I've owned! I've had other small cars, including two 1.25 Fiesta's and a 1.3 Mitsubishi Colt.

The Auris Is I assume quite heavy for a little car when compared to the Fiesta's (which were fairly early models) but is surprisingly gutless when compared to the Colt. The acceleration in fourth or fifth is almost non existent and dual carriageway slip roads and hills are a bit of a challenge.

Now I know it's a 1.3 but as I say whilst a lovely car, the car is surprisingly slow.

Has anyone else noticed this? As far as I know everything is working ok. I do a lot of town driving where it is ok, but out of town requires some forward planning.

First of all you're comparing cars from two separate market sectors - the Colt and Fiestas both being superminis and the Auris from the next sector.

I've had two Auris 1.33's and given sensible gear changing the Auris is quite capable of keeping up with other traffic, and overtaking without drama whether on the motorway or otherwise. Of course it does depend what speed you're expecting to accelerate from in either 4th or 5th!

To me my Auris 1.3 2011 just seems to pick in gear 4, not so much in 5 and 6 is just a no no.

Thanks for those replies. I understand it's a bigger car than the fiesta's, less so the Colt. However, the overall acceleration/throttle response is IMHO significantly less than either of them.

The fiesta was a 1.25 and while it struggled over the 85mph mark, picked up very well for a little car. The Colt was pretty good too.

I'm not expecting F1 performance lol, it's just that in third at 50mph I could be confident of a fairly brisk overtaking in the older cars. In the Auris, if I plant my foot in third, the take up is middling at best.

As I say don't get me wrong; I love my Auris and will definitely get another Toyota when the time comes, just a bit miffed really.

The Colt was firmly a supermini - and competed with the Yaris - now replaced by the smaller Mirage. Mitsubishi's compititor to tbe Auris was the Lancer - no longer imported into the UK.

Having said that, the Auris uses a drive by wire throttle control which may seem less responsive than the old mechanical systems used on the Fiestas and Colt., but which allows for more accurate emissions control.

your Auris will have a "drive by wire" throttle. Possibly your older cars didn't but if they did they very probably have a different throttle response programmed into them. Toyotas seem to have a very gentle throttle response - you really need to bury the pedal to invoke a strong reaction - no doubt partly to help in performing well in EU economy/emissions tests but probably also because Toyota do seem to have a very careful, almost nanny, approach.
