Avensis 2001 Crisis - Motor Trouble

My wife owns a 2001, 1,8 l, Avensis. While she was on vacation I borrowed the car on a few trips, and one day the yellow motor light came on. The car was doing some coughing and the motor didn't act as he should have. With the test at the garage, they couldn't find anything the first time, to "fat mixture" (sorry my rather poor english) on the second test, and the third and last one nothing again. The motor to and from the garage was not feeling well at all, climbing the smallest hill in about 10 km/h and almost stoped in 1. gear. We changed the oil, oil filter, new spark plugs... and it was almost back on normal behaviour.. But then my wife should go to work, through the tunnel with 10 % down and up - then the car stoped, after black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe... The motor has not passed 200 000 km, and it uses a bit (much) oil at normal use. 1-2 l, pr. month... or more...
Is the motor dead and just has to be buried, or is it possible to get it alive again?
If dead - what motor can replace that one, without any adjustment in the computers and so on...?

Hello

If the engine / motor is using oil as burning oil it is a fair chance your issue is with the o2 sensor.

These are oxygen sensors which read air to fuel ratio / lamba.

Have you had the code read on why the car is throwing the amber engine light?

No, not checked any codes... I'm not familiar with the Avensis, so I'm not sure how to find it my self... and now the car's outside the garage 30 km from our house, so not so easy to check something at the present... :(
I forgot to mention that my private "foreman" (mechanic) looked at it, and he removed something in the catalysator (?) so the air/exhaust went through... That was after the change of plugs/oil/air filter... Then the car was almost as good as new, reaching 100 km/h and so on... but next day it was back to "jumpdriving" and the next day it died in the tunnel, after letting out a great deal of black smoke, as my wife describes it...
And the garage 14 days ago didn't find anything, exept the "fat mixture" of gasolin and air or something... but it disappered again.. but the yellow light was off just a couple of km, and then it went back on again...
The local here tells us that this model of Avensis usually used some oil, already from the fabric... and the used car dealer told us that his brother had the same problem with his Avensis, and I have heard it from others also... some motors were changed by Toyota, but just for some years... I guess that chance has passed now... :D

Yes your age avensis had a common issue with oil consumption but as long as you top up the oil in the engine it will go on for years.

The fix was for toyota to use new parts, piston and rings to stop the jets from gumming up, later on they also revised the amount of engine oil to use as it would cause sloshing and not pumping in and around the engine.

I don't think this is an issue with the engine, eg compression. Motor will be fine, the mechanic will be able to test this with a compression tester.

I understand how secluded Norway is, I lived in Haugesund for an IT contract for several months.

It sounds like the local shop has removed the catalytic converter contents. - This may be an issue with emission testing later on in the year!

Fat mixture sounds like its running rich..

Black smoke indicates the car is injecting to much fuel into car. The engine computer detects how much fuel needs to be inserted by looking at various sensors. Too much fuel in the engine will cause the engine to run rich and loose power.

These sensors are

oxygen sensor - This sensor normally sits before the catalytic converter. This gives the ecu the reading to tell it how much fuel is needed.

Airflow Sensor - This sensor sits after the air filter and before the throttle body, this detects how much air is coming in and at what temperature.

Manifold pressure sensor - This sensor is actually sometimes a small rubber pipe which leads and plugs onto a vacuum outlet for egr operation.
