2005 1.8 vvti ticking noise

Hi, 

I've recently bought a 2005 1.8 vvti corolla verso. The car seems to run fine however under throttle there is a noticeable ticking noise which appears to come from the rear left side of the engine (when looking at the bay).

In first gear the tick starts at around 1.5k rpm in second its clearly noticeable at 2.5k. But it also makes the noise when stationary in neutral.  idle is fine abs smooth but put some throttle through and it starts to tick. 

I've Google and searched on here and some people have mentioned various thing but I just wanted to see if people had suggestions specific to my issues

Just an update, it doesn't appear to do it when cold. At idle when warm it makes a regular rattle noise, only slightly.

When under throttle the enginemakes the ticking noise but if you put more revs through, over 2.5k then it stops.

Any thoughts? 

After searching the net in wondering if it's the tensioner or chain guides.

Tensioner looks like it would be fairly easy to change but chain guides look like a trip to the garage. Any one had similar issues?
