Remote Central Locking Problem

I have a Yaris which I bought in September. I'm really delighted with it except for one very annoying intermittent problem with the remote central locking. On occasions the remote 'lock' won't work. 'Unlock' is fine, and so is manual lock. Amongst the things I have been told by the garage are it could be a dodgy Battery, poor 'pointing' of the remote, and radio interference. The first two are Billy Bobbins, as it happens with both keys, and from all angles, but the radio interference may be a possibility. As it is intermittent, the garage won't look at it, particularily as they say they have not heard of anyone else having the problem. So... anyone else had the problem?

As I discovered for the 1st time today, the car won't lock itself if the boot isn't shut 100%. Could it be something that simple?

radio interference is probably the problem. i had this problem a few months ago. and all my neighbours within 30 feet of my house were havin the same problem. check with ur neighbours to see if they have a problem as well

I noticed this too..wondered why it would unlock by remote but wouldnt lock by remote. Make sure all the doors are shut. I felt a bit stupid finding it out after searching for remote problems...

Yeah, if the car detects that any of its doors arent shut then it'll prevent the lock from working. I do find that the boot sometimes doesnt catch properly and you dont realise it as it does look pretty much closed!

The one thing that peeves me about the Yaris is the way the doors fail to shut.... you really have to slam them to shut them, whereas on most cars (inc the New Yaris) you just close them and they shut...

Check the dash - is the "door open" button showing? This will also show if the boot is slightly open.

And in future - tell people "dont tap it, whack it", like I do!:lol:

Thanks for all that suggested this - next time it happens I'll check the doors! (The boot does sometimes fail to catch)

Finally, someone else who agrees with me!!

My Yaris is 09 plate.

it started last year, wouldn't unlock but would lock

i could open/ lock manually ok

its been fine for 6 months on its own

its now started again, but worse, it locks and unlocks without me pressing my fob? It's also hard to start , it's as if the Battery is draining overnight?

Hi Dee4545

I am having the same problem. Intermittent failure to remote lock or unlock and again, intermittently not starting (need to press start button multiple times even with fob pressing it) Annoyingly, took it to Toyota garage for diagnostics but it behaved itself beautifully and locked every time. I’m feeling vulnerable in case it doesn’t start one day. Any advice?! 🙏🏼

Hi Charkystar

I'm having the same problem, did you find out what the problem was?

If you don't know when the 12v Battery was last changed (Or it's never been changed!) then I'd start with that - I've been reading a few posts on here recently where weird stuff was happening and usually it gets traced to an old 12v Battery that's on its way out. In a few cases, the Battery has been tested by the dealer/RAC/AA and given a clean bill of health, but the problems continued until the battery was replaced, then it was fine, so even if it passes a battery test that doesn't eliminate it from suspicion!
