Engine Specialist Needed

Hi,

I just bought a '94 Carina E XLI 1.6 not long ago. All together the car drives well and feels solid, but I have some probs with the engine.

There is a ticking/knocking noise coming from the cylinder head. As I listen where it comes from, I suppose (and hope) it's not the small end bearing, but rather the camshaft bearing or incorrect valve clearance (or how that is called). It gives the noise at around 2500-3000 rpm and above, when there is no load on the engine. So if I push the pedal and release it in neutral gear, it can be heard. Or if I drive in e.g. 3rd gear, push the pedal just enough not to let the engine break, but neither accelerating, it can be heard. Also there is minor blue smoke, and minor twitching/yanking(?) sometimes.

Anyway the engine starts easily and looks fine, does not eat oil etc., has only 110000 miles. It's even kinda' strong, though I suppose it should be slightly stronger.

I am looking for advice on whether it is worth the price to deal with the issue. Honestly I would rather like to have it fixed. I like to push the pedal and like when the engine is fine and strong, but it doesn't make sense to spend more then about 2-300 £ on it. What do you think? Other option is I'll just use it for a year as it is and then sell it.

If someone can recommend a garage or anyone who could have a look around my area, please contact me! I can even help in the labour. :) I am at AL10 8SA, Hatfield, Hertfordshire and willing to travel about 100 miles.

Thanks in advance,

Tamas
