Are Square number plates still road legal?

I have a UK Model Celica GT 1995 which did have the UK standard sized rectangle number plate surround at the rear but it now has the Jap Import surround at the rear which only fitts the square plates.

now i understand that if your car cannot fit a standard rectangle plate (like most jap imports) then the square is OK. but where do i stand as mine is not an import yet has that sized surround.

The import one looks better as most would agree.

it is legal on the import as the recess cant take the uk plate but if you swop your rear panel who would know :D
