Aygo+ 2nd Service 'problem'

First post! OK, I've just taken my Aygo+ in for it's 2nd service. It's just 2 years old and was originally bought (And driven!) by my elderly father until he decided he had lost his confidence and didn't want to drive any more so I bought it off him a year ago (just after it's 1st service). It's used as a 2nd car and current mileage is just 12,000. Driven conservatively (as the mpg figures show!). I've just had a call from my local dealer to say that the brake pads are '60% worn' BUT the main problem is that there is scouring on the disc pads!! He's suggesting they may be able to skim it at a cost of £140 or if that doesn't work it's new discs at a cost of £240!! Making the service a total of £400+!

I'm no expert at all when it comes to cars but how can the discs be worn if the brake pads aren't totally worn out? Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Do you mean "discs" when you say "disc pads"?

Thank them for the advisory, pay for the service and take it to an independent, or inspect them yourself.

Replacing brake components is a good earner for garages - that's why I always check them before I drop the car off!

If you are not confident to fit them yourself, pay a local garage.

£240.00 simply equals loads of profit.

If you are worried about quality, your genuine *top quality* Toyota ones only managed 12,000 conservative miles.

Have you noticed any problems under braking, for example juddering from the front of the car? Pulling to one side?

If not, the discs may not be pristine but it's unlikely they need any attention. My local dealer once said the same thing about my new Corolla front discs a few years ago, but when pressed into describing the exact nature of the problem, backed down and said skimming wasn't needed after all.

I have about 50% wear on my Aygo front pads after 20k miles and the brakes are fine. That's after track days as well.

Ask your dealer what problems the discs may cause, and if you haven't noticed any problems while driving make sure they come up with a pretty compelling excuse for you to spend your money!

Shop around, my stealer quoted me £190 for new discs and pads up front at the second service. I phoned a few dealers and this came down to £150. Looking at the parts it seems a simple fit, I might have a go myself!!!

Seemed a bit suspect to me as on my first service, the same dealer claimed that the pads had hardly been broken in. I really battered them down on the service price, so maybe they wanted to claw something back.
