Drive Shaft / Gearbox Noise

My 2000 W reg Avensis 1.8 GL has recently developed a rapid tapping sound when in 2nd 3rd 4th & 5th gears when under power. I thought it was the near side drive shaft (Left) because about 3 months ago I clouted the kerb really hard , I thought that I must have bent the drive shaft resulting in the CV joint wearing. Anyway I got a second hane drive shatf and fitted it hoping this would get rid of the nosie, but it has not. Any suggestions to what I can do to sort this out would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Jim.

How loud is the tapping sound and how exactly do you mean rapid - does the tapping follow the rev of the engine, the rev of the gearbox or the rev of the wheels, if you know what i mean? If its a quiet enough noise that follows the rev of your engine, it may well be the tappets on your camshaft, i had a Starlet that used to do that. Does the noise sound like it's something thats in bad health in the car or would you reckon it could be something loose that just vibrates at certain engine speeds, such as a loose engine cover? A fried gearbox would have more of a whine or a 'baby's rattle' noise from it.

Sorry to be a prophet of doom!

Same thing on my daughters 2001 VVTI GS. Gearbox bearings had to be replaced, quiet on overrun and in neutral, just a problem under load.

Specialist gearbox repairers, cost £615 all in.
