Yaris Seat Belt Defect - Recall

There are articles in today's newspapers regarding the recall of 45,000 UK Toyota Yaris cars built in 2006 and 2007 with potentially faulty seat belt pretensioners.

I called Toyota Customer Services this morning to find out what I needed to do to get my 2007 1.4 D4D inspected. The Customer Service operator said that 'they' hadn't heard anything and so couldn't offer me any advice. He thought that I would receive a letter in due course telling me what to do. When I asked him how Toyota would know where to send the letter he said that they would get the information from the DVLA.

If anyone has more information on this issue, it would be useful to post it here.

Couldn't possibly comment ;)

However, any recall to a vehicle, involves the manufacturer liasing with DVLA to produce a list of affected vehicles. You will be notified by post if you are affected

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted.....................There is no point in contacting Toyota or their dealers untill you receive a letter

I asked the Toyota Customer Services representative this morning "if I don't get a letter, does that mean that my car is not affected, or could it mean a breakdown in communication between Toyota and the DVLA?" I also asked that in the event I didn't receive a letter, how long I should wait before making further enquiries. Neither question was answered properly. It seems that we have to wait for a letter and if we don't get one our car must not be affected by the recall.

Incidentally, I checked the DSA and AA websites hoping to find more details, particularly the VIN or Chassis numbers of affected vehicles. but the there was no information on either site.

How can newspapers can the story, which surely must have originated from Toyota or the DSA, without either organisation seemingly knowing anything about it?

VOSA should be the first website to list a recall and it's not on there yet either

That is how the press operates. How many times have you seen a new model appear in the press before your dealer knows anything about it?

WHEN The recall is officially announced, you will be able to get a list of affected vehicles by VIN number, if you think you have been overlooked, you could pop into your dealer to check out the VIN. As the recall hasnt been officially announced, then I would sit tight and wait for the information to be released, until such time, customer relations and your dealer will have no useful information for you

hey guys how ya going?

About the seat belt pretensioner recall, its not actually the pretensioner itself that's the problem its a bit of foam that's been installed incorrectly underneath it that could catch fire if you happen to be in a crash.

If your wondering how i know I'm doing a mechanics apprenticeship at a Toyota dealership

I see that the seat belt tensioner recall has just appeared on the VOSA website, so I presume that owners of affected vehicles will be contacted soon.

On a related topic I've just received a letter from the main dealer advising "....Toyota...have found that there is a possible issue with your Toyota Yaris steering column mounting. Tthis item needs inspecting for a possible adjustment or maintenance repair". (My Yaris is a 1.4 D4D first registered 1/9/07).

Presumably this is a safety issue affecting quite a few cars, but does not seem to be the subject of a fomal recall. Seems strange to me.

It has been identified that the possibility exists, that the sound insulator beneath the front seatbelt pretensioner may become damaged by the high temperature gas generated when the device is activated during a collision. In the worst case, should the insulator ignite, a post-collision fire may ensue.
