    Derailing Privatisation

The simple answer to that, mathew, is that the government want to spend your money in a manner that THEY decide is best for you. To our government (any government) we are simply simple-minded yokels who are incapable of planning our spending wisely, so they tax us just short of causing civil unrest and we just take it on the chin. Annoyingly, they do spend a lot of our cash on idle people who sponge off the state (it’s still us) in any way they can. Think about the £6 million per day that our government spends on a crowd of ******* who sneak in by the back door!

    PHEV wheel corrosion

I will try another photo later however I took this today while the wheel was off having unexpected new tyres. (Wife hit a pot hole while out earlier which wrecked the tyre. Had to have two new ones fitted the day before we set off on holiday to Scoyland). All wheels are similar. I understand about acidic cleaners. I generally use the, snow foam, Autoglym shampoo. Only very rarely a non acidic cleaner to remove metallic particles etc. always blast off the wheels with pressure washer on full tilt. Then use Autoglym wheel protector finish spray.

    Not installed maps ??

Did the car even come with a map? I bought my car without the map so that what it says I think. Think it needs the GPS module and map retrofit, not cheap, like the price of the map option when buying a new car. Others more clued up can advise.
  6. As thread title, has anyone ever actually had an over the air update for the infotainment in their MY23 onwards Corolla with the new smart connect plus system? Had mines since November last year and have never had an update despite checking occasionally. How often do Toyota do them? Is it an annual thing?

    Derailing Privatisation

I remember learning about Hong Kong, they did something revolutionary, going from a high tax high poverty dump, to being a great and successful city, they did this by lowering all taxes, and allowing the population to grow, they actually made more money from people having more money to spend, yes took them 10years to become a successful city, but it worked, everyone had 2 cars, 2 Houses, they went out to eat 3/4times a week, obviously this inflation rise it doesn't work, it's not a successful plan, why can't someone have the balls and try this
  8. Simon, yes. I think they hope that you will get used to it. In practise you won't bother/remember if it is a short trip to the shops. You then find it such a PITA that you accept it. However there will be so many false alerts it will drive you nuts. Everyone will have to bombard the officials, Highways, Councils, shopping park owners, MPs to get the proper signage in place. EVERYTIME.

Hybrid battery fan and air inlet

Just done a test with a smoke generator (smoking matches) while battery fan is running after a trip. Can confirm the air is sucked in from the vent at the back of the battery box between the front seats, ie from middle row passenger feet area. Not sure where it is blown out from. Should be able to pull off that rear cover and hoover out the inlet area. Will comment on that when I get round to doing it My battery temerature (as seen in various apps) is normally 28-34C But was at 40C on a recent long fast but gentle motorway trip, which seems a bit high to me.

    Quiet in here

Nope, probably to do with the people that own supras, I have a MK4 I do not go on the MK4 supra form website anymore because of the self-centred people on it, I was hoping for a better experience on here with the supra thread, but no one comments 😂

    Suble ticking noise

Hi Adam, thats good news you have found the problem but not so great its the clutch you have to change. Is this the first time you have been able to get under to have a look.

    Flat Battery

I've just had a dash cam fitted being powered via the OBD port, as Nextbase have this cable as an alternative to the "other" hardwired way. I'm just giving this cable a try, if it works out to not to do the exact same as a hardwire method, I'll be having words with Nextbase, as they clearly advertise it as the same.

You don’t need long runs Paul, it just needs to be in ready mode. There’s hundreds of posts on it.

    Not installed maps ??

Hi Iain, assuming that your sons car does have sat nav installed then it's likely the "not installed" message is that the maps are outdated and need updating. Built in sat nav systems typically come with pre-loaded maps, but these maps can become outdated over time. This can happen due to changes in roads, new points of interest, etc. The system detects this and displays the "not installed" message since the current maps aren't usable for navigation. You will need to purchase updated maps.Hope this helps.

    Bottle jack

I've used a bottle jack on a Land Rover (original manufacturer supplied part) and wouldn't recommend it - it wasn't nearly as good as a traditional scissor jack. A flat scissor jack can be stored easily in most places, you can wind it out a bit to secure it against the trim. On several cars I've owned it's been under the carpet near the rear lights. In the corolla I could likely put one under the floor. You may find it fits into the wheel space if wound out a bit.

    Suble ticking noise

Hello there again, I've been under it with the torch and can now say 100 percent that it's the clutch. Most likely the throw out bearing. If you physically put pressure on the slave fork the noise stops. Let go of the fork and it starts. So I'm getting quotes on a new clutch. Was happy enough to do my defender clutch, but that's another foot off the ground of room. This is a bit tight without a ramp. But I feel better knowing that it's not the engine. Clutch is due soon anyway.

    Flat Battery

My wife has a Yaris Cross which is just less than 2 years old. After 100 mile journey we stopped at a supermarket and when we came out the car wouldn’t start. Called out the AA and the engineer diagnosed a flat / faulty battery. He got the car running with a battery jump starter. Then I did some extensive research on the issue (I’m a retired electrical engineer). Surprise, surprise it’s a well known problem. It appears that the auxiliary battery (which is relatively small) is only used to power up the circuits controlling the cars systems and some accessories and those circuits need a minimum of +12 volts to trigger them. If for any reason the battery voltage drops too low because of a current drain or fault the car will not be able to use the traction battery to start. I replaced the auxiliary battery and all is now good, I put the old battery on a long charge and a battery tester showed it to be OK but when I checked the voltage it was only just above 12 volts when it should be at least 13 volts when fully charged. Have read numerous reports of owners taking their car to a dealership and being told that the battery is OK, but did they check the voltage? To make matters worse I understand that Toyota know about this issue but haven’t resolved it, there are also some rumours that there was a faulty batch of batteries but I haven’t been able to confirm that. The only answer, in my opinion (providing you have a good battery) is to do some regular long runs and make sure you switch off any circuits or devices that could drain your battery.

    Suble ticking noise

Hi Adam, knowing now from your updated post that it sounds like it is coming from the lower part of the engine and given the unique aspects of the Hiace situation (passenger side noise, specific RPM range), the EGR system or exhaust manifold leak are likely contenders for the ticking source. However, a valve gear inspection wouldn't hurt, especially if you're comfortable doing a visual check for leaks around the valve cover gasket. Let us know how you get on as it will be interesting to know the exact cause as it will help others and give additional insights into what else can also cause these ticking sounds.

    New Yaris vs Honda Jazz

The only thing I think that I will lose would be the HUD as otherwise the specs are similar in the Excel trim for the Yaris and Advance trim in the Jazz Apart from less space of course compared to my Prius

    NCT

With regards to the NCT, the emissions are not done, but everything else is. I would advise though, for you to make sure your 12v battery is fully charged. (Or bring your own jump pack) The reason being, when I had my '19 Corolla hybrid saloon tested last year in Arklow, I noticed that when the tester had finished on the brake rollers and drove onto the lift at the end, he left the car in Neutral (presumably so he could spin the wheels) when doing his checks underneath. He had also left the lights on, and as you know being left in Neutral in Ready mode, the batteries don't get charged, and leaving the lights on didn't help. My 12v battery was a very weak at the time, and by the time he finished and dropped the lift, the car had shut itself down and he couldn't get it restarted. Luckily I was watching through the viewing windows, and saw what had happened. When he opened the shutter at the end I called him out and explained what had happened, and if he has a jump pack handy that will start the car. He had a jump pack there, and after starting the car up, left it outside the main office window (in Ready mode but in Park) while I collected my cert.
