    RAV 4 5th Generation - Off Road

Hey thanks. Yes doubt I'd do this to mine but good to watch !!!!

    Paint quality

Paint does seem bit thin on the plastic bumpers - I already have a few nicks/chips on them from stones. Bonnet so far is ok from stone chips, I had a 2021 Honda and that chipped quite badly. The Corolla is much better. Paint quality is definitely lower than in the past, but seems ok to last a good few years. Even my Auris suffered from stone chips on the bonnet. FYI if you want shine on the bodywork, I picked up a tip from old valeters and use Johnsons baby wash to wash my car now. (Plus microfibre wash mits, a bucket with grit guard and a giant microfibre drying towel.) Seems funny, but you get a really good shine on the panels that you can see yourself in. Plus it's not going to damage you or the environment - the chemical warning messages on the back of some car care products are quite extreme.

    Hella horn upgrade kit

Hi, I would love to buy those from you please, if you don't mind the hassle of posting them? I can't believe a vehicle the size of a RAV4 sounds like a child's squeaky toy!! Kind regards, Craig Marston

    Messages reading out volume

Sadly, I think the volume issue is standard - I have the same problem and have seen others complain about it too. I press the steering wheel button for Siri but while the music volume reduces a bit on the drivers speaker the others are still normal volume so it can be hard to be heard. Hopefully something that can be fixed with an over the air software update when they start issuing these. You may be able to get the message volume to increase by using the volume control while it's speaking, it works when Siri is speaking.

    Confusion

There seems to be a few manufacturers that are actively making it easier to disable by providing switchable driving profiles though. They know the technology doesn't fully work so are making it easy to disable while still complying with the new law. I think I'd heard maybe even budget brand Dacia have made it easy to disengage by a button on the dash too. The technology isn't there yet to provide a reliable speed limit warning or 100% accurate speedometer - the two combined are making the situation worse unless people drive around under the actual speed limit holding up traffic, and even then they will still receive false warnings when it thinks the limit is lower than it actually is. On the motorway my car reads 4mph under the actual speed at 70mph, so your maximum speed without beeps would be 66mph not 70mph. I know someone with a 22 year old Land Rover that is 100% accurate on the speedometer, so would be holding them up. Plus the fact when I come out of the services it thinks I should rejoin the motorway at 20mph because it doesn't know the limit.

    Cheap Avensis Estate ?

'V-Matic' refers to the engine, not the gearbox. Also known as Valvematic, it means the valve lift is variable in addition to having variable valve timing.

At last... The new car is home!

You can turn the rear seat reminder off in the settings on mine but I don’t know about a 24 model. I like it on actually because I’m more than daft enough to forget something I’ve chucked in. I’ve been in a new Kia this week and that says, check rear seat for items and passengers!

    Paint quality

I used to be annoyed be the orange peel effect of the paint on my Corolla, but found the secret is to park it next to an Audi. The paint quality seems pretty shocking on some recent model Audis and Toyota paint looks fantastic in comparison 😉

    Attaching aux battery charger

That sounds sensible to me! I think I'll do that. Thanks for your feedback, such a big help. Makes clubs like this worthwhile 😊

    Attaching aux battery charger

I've wired up the CTEC socket to mine, but direct to the battery in the boot. I find it more convenient to have the charger and extension reel in the boot, and find I can carefully close the tailgate down on the cable without crushing it. It allows the car to be locked as normal whilst it's charging, and everything's safely dry inside the boot in case of rain etc.

    Excel vs Premiere Edition

Design 17” wheels tyres are the best combination for these cars. The 16” are also good. For the 18” definitely will be trade off and firmer ride. Handling wise, not much different. The ultra low profile tyres actually does not help between handling and cornering, you can see the real gr4 Yaris has chunkier tyres than gr sport hybrid. 🛞👌

Space saver tyre fitting. Excel CHR 2021 1.8

Anthony, lucky you, 2 punctures in 12 years. I had two in two months (Mar/Apr) but both our fault, sort of, where we hit 12 inch kerbs that were both damaged. However, you mentioned a pressure charger and charge. These were still in my car after the spare wheel was fitted. I was interested to read that the can of gunk was a lifed item. Having no need of it I sold the kit on eBay.

Tow bar mounted thule bike rack

Thanks, nose weight is a new expression for me 🤣 I plan to take the batteries out before (only takes a couple of mins) which will also save several KGs. Thanks for the nose weight heads up 👍

    Confusion

Just an FYI: this audio alarm when over the speed limit applies to all manufacturers from July 1st this year. It’s meant to be on each time you start the car. Nothing can be done as far as I’m aware. Some are doing it already, a bit of research is required.

2020 Excel hybrid - 18 inch tyre size opinions

I will do so! Taking the rav4 on a road trip to Germany during half-term, not winter weather but should be good to see how noisy they are. So far they feel more comfortable than the previous mismatched tyres the car had...
  22. I've had my Avensis for about 3 - 4 years and have only used the satnav once when I first had the car. I'm retired now and don't do much mileage apart from picking up the grandkids from school. Anyway, I had to go to a funeral last week and wasn't sure of the route, but luckily, I checked it out on Google maps the evening before. Before setting off to the funeral I tried to use the satnav. I selected Destination, tapped Postcode and entered the postcode which then appeared on the screen in a long box. No other buttons or instructions on the screen. I tapped on the box containing the postcode and the screen changed to maps with a circle surrounded by arrows pointing in various directions. Still no instructions on the screen. I tapped the circle a few times but nothing happened. I must have inadvertantly touched something as I was tapping because the screen went to map view with no relevant GO, START or other button implying it wanted to start the route. No highlighted road ahead and no voice command. I went thru this procedure 3 times before giving up and relying on my memory of Google maps the previous evening. I so wished that I'd dug out my wife's old TOM TOM which was a breeze to use. Tap in the postcode, hit start or go (can't remember) and away you went following the voice instructions.....so flippin' simple! Can someone please tell me in simple terms how to get the route and voice instructions underway after tapping in the postcode destination, please? I would be eternally grateful. Thank you.

2020 Excel hybrid - 18 inch tyre size opinions

Keep us posted on how you feel they are working out?
  24. not possible i'm afraid. these are measured at development stage. It's a european requirement. Being a Jap import it does not have the emission figures so they are stated zero rated. I believe thats why they are ULEZ free.

    Flat battert

2021 was getting to the end of it. Depends if it's an early or late 2021, or for MY even a late 2020. But yes, quite possibly when the rot started.

Tow bar mounted thule bike rack

No worries. Just be mindful that the nose weight of the towbar is 70kg (from memory), so if you have 2x 25kg bikes, you may want to double check the weight of the bike carrier itself - a quick check of thule website suggest the 2-bike carriers are <20kg, but the 3-bike ones are marginally over.
  27. I’ve cancelled my new Yaris premier order due to the isa audio alarm (couldn’t live with it) and bought a 73 Corolla 2.0 excel instead on which I can disable the audio alarm permanently.👍 Anyway, on the drive home I was getting WhatsApp messages and the music volume would not silence or reduce enough to allow me to hear the messages through the car speakers. Does anyone know how to get the music volume to stop/ reduce volume to allow the messages to be heard? My last Kia car did it no bother, but I’m probably being a bit thick and can’t figure it out! And yes, I’ve checked the manual and can’t see solutions before someone says that 😉
