    Water Meters

Last April we changed to a water meter - daft paying the fixed charges based on rateable value when there are just the two of us. So, a week or so ago, I received a call from Severn-Trent, asking if our water usage habits had changed. This was because our usage had increased considerably - from an expected 200 litres/day to around 500 litres/day. Just recently, we have had a new bathroom fitted and a large patio laid. Both contractors used water, but the S/T agent said this would not be the cause of the increase, and so a visit from an engineer was arranged. Yesterday the engineer visited, and confirmed the meter was working correctly, and there were no leaks between their stop tap and mine. The engineer suggested that I should go on line and check my bills, and gave me the current meter reading, and the serial number of the meter. I did some checking (the bills are a pig to understand) but one thing I spotted was that the serial number of our meter, given to me by the engineer, is different to the serial number shown on my bills. I contacted S/T and told the agent about this anomaly, and now there is an investigation to be carried out to see if I am being overcharged for water. What a ruddy mess!

    Stash the Cash

I rarely carry any cash these days - so easy to just swipe my debit card at the till, even for small purchases. But if I do want a few pounds, our local Lidl, just a few streets from us, still do cash back. Our Sainsbury’s and Tesco now have only a few checkouts, and most of them stand unmanned - conversely the self checkout points have increased. In our small town we used to have four banks - now we just have the Nationwide. I have been with Nationwide for a long time, and do my banking on line. The one downside is that, if someone sends you a paper cheque, this has to be taken to the bank to be credited into your account. That happened to me last November - from my house insurers, with whom everything is dealt with on line !!!! Crazy. Although nearly 90, I have no trouble doing my finances, or making purchases, on line. But my wife is hopeless, because she is scared of making a mistake, and cannot deal with things like passwords. I am lucky - during my career my Company went computerised, and I was required to learn four different disciplines. As the elderly pass on, I think the government are hoping the “new elderly” will become computer literate, but I’m not sure they have got it right. So some poor sods may well have a struggle.

And what causes that? Whatever the reason I don't think that happens immediately after purchase, right?

    Hilux Engine Misfire

Hi, the warning symbols on my car for engine power reduced were showing. I sent it in to Toyota, and they have found that the No.2 injector and rail pressure sensor wiring has damaged and snapped, with slight damage to No.1 injector wire. The car has been used for 5 years and has travelled 74,000 miles. Is there a warranty for this?

    GR 86 Test drive.

Yes, this is the case. It's not you. It's not so much the clutch as it is the throttle response. At standstill and low speeds it has a response delay meaning the usual throttle blipping you may do at take off doesn't actually result in the engine response you'd expect. Instead it does nothing and you effectively try to pull away at idle. It's one of my key peeves about this car (and most modern fly-by-wire cars). Your brain will eventually learn to compensate for it. And it's not there once you are on the move. The other part that makes smooth shifting harder is the heavy flywheel. Again, this is most evident at lower speeds. It also means you need to be careful when downshifting at corner entry as you can easily upset the rear end if you are a bit off on the revs. Just speak to the dealer to have it switched off. It's only really audible above 4000 rpm but then it gets louder and actually becomes tiring if you have a spirited session or on track. The engine naturally sounds OK and is audible enough without any help. Coming from a Caterham I think you are in the right spot to appreciate the 86. It is much more of a sports car than what most people expect nowadays. It's no Audi TT. It doesn't cuddle and cosset you, but begs to be driven. Be aware, your Caterham is probably easier to handle on the limit. My average fuel consumption since new sits at 24 mpg. But on longer drives at 70 mph I've averaged 40 mpg. I'm sure you can get around 45 if you (for some reason) wanted to.

    Stash the Cash

Somebody tried to blow up the cash machine at the Co Op in my village, they mustn't have used enough gas as it only cracked a bit of brick work and they legged it, never seen so many people look at a cash machine, cops all around scratching their heads for hours 🤣🤣

Real Time Traffic Information - GR Sport

I don't think so - unless the car knows your intended route, I don't think it can or should show random 'hold-ups' that may or may not be in your way. But it certainly should show hold-ups on your planned route and potential alternatives ... You will need an appropriate subscription to a traffic service. In the earlier system (i.e. my car) that is provided by INRIXTRAFFIC and delivered via FM radio - imperfect but it works. I believe that one can also specify use of a connected smartphone data service as well / instead - but that must be switched on. I might assume (which is dangerous) that Toyota will continue to use INRIX data but deliver the information as a Toyota cloud-based connected service. But there is a risk that they rely on just information from connected Toyotas - which won't work so well, particularly as more and more folk rely on AA / ACP services ...

    Stash the Cash

Some years ago we lost our only cash machine in a large village. Lost as in someone removed it at 11 at night. Cash was still needed in those days and it was a nightmare as cash back was needed but no one had cash to buy stuff. The Parish Council installed its own machine. The foundations were about 10 feet deep. Then the Coop, two independents and Budgens all installed machines. Even HSBC reinstalled its machine and rebuilt the bank. Weeks later HSBC closed bank and machine.
  17. Cars registered after 1 June 2021 carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. When those manufacturer’s warranties have expired, the cars automatically qualifies for the Toyota warranty, when it undergoes a qualifying service at a Toyota centre, up until the vehicle is ten years old or reaches the 100,000-mile limit. It's 5 years/100k miles warranty before 1st June 2021. https://mag.toyota.co.uk/toyota-warranty-how-it-works/#:~:text=Cars registered after 1 June, reaches the 100%2C000-mile limit.

    Stash the Cash

We had a scrapping almost like that. A real Fenlander. He contracted to remove scrap from two bombing ranges in Lincolnshire. There were a couple of bomb scares arising. One was on a housing estate. Someone was suspicious of the garden ornaments at a house. They were American 500lb bombs, inert I should add but only after being certified. "Where did you get those from?" "Don't know his name, but he's only got one arm." ~~~ Knock knock "Yes?" said Nigel (name changed). They searched his home and grounds and were eventually satisfied that everything was fair and above board (just). Then he asked if the would like to look in a locked shed. Inside were boxes of live 0.5in ammunition, fell out of a helicopter. Extraordinarily nothing more was said. We reckon he was as sharp as a tack, always had a wallet stuffed with cash, and was otherwise illiterate.

    RAV4 mpg.

But none of us can actually afford to buy any fuel in Germany - ouch! 😉 On the Tesco's forecourt there is Tesco Momentum 99 - their E5 is a 99 octane blend with appropriate additives - which is what I buy when I feel the car deserves a treat!
  20. Worth pointing out that if you get a 2020 you will get a 6 year warranty as the 10 years starts from the cars registration year. Also it has a maximum of 100k miles so you could buy a 1 year old car on 90k miles and only get around 1 years warranty. edit: my previous auris was a 2016 and was covered under the 10 year warranty as long as you service it with Toyota each year.

Something should show on the map display I think, even if you haven't put a route in - coming up to a jam should show red on the road which you can touch and it comes up with a bit of information, I'm pretty sure. Back to the salesperson I think!

Best Fuel Grade For Yaris Hybrid

The engine gets completely clogged with carbon, the oil strainer which is only accessible with the crankcase split starves the engine of oil. It depends how far it’s gone but the bill for labour and parts is usually between £5000-10,000.
