Drivers who speed will be slowed down by EU car tech
jthspace posted a topic in General Club Discussions
Drivers who speed will be slowed down by EU car tech The Telegraph CARS will beep, vibrate or slow down if drivers are speeding under new mandatory safety technology that comes into effect this summer. From July 6, new vehicles sold in the European Union and Northern Ireland will be fitted with intelligent speed assistance (ISA) to prevent accidents. Although the UK has opted out, meaning it will not be a requirement on British roads, the technology will still be installed in most cars, and drivers can choose to switch it off on a daily basis. Steve Gooding, the director of the RAC Foundation, an independent research organisation, told The Sunday Times: “I think many motorists will tire of switching off ISA and they will just learn to live with it.” Mr Gooding said it would take autonomy away from drivers, with cars increasingly deciding what drivers can and can’t do, and was the beginning of the end of people choosing cars based on top speed. ISA has a forward-facing camera that can recognise speed limit signs and is integrated with GPS mapping data so the car always knows what limit applies to its location. When fitted, the technology will send a warning beep or the steering wheel will vibrate when drivers pass the speed limit. If the driver does not take action, the accelerator will ease up, reducing the speed to keep in line with the limit. Manufacturers including Ford have been offering ISA as an option on new cars since 2015, and it has been mandatory on all new cars sold in Europe since 2022, but could be switched off. The European Transport Safety Council said that while it took drivers a short time to adjust to the technology, the majority saw it as a positive step. It also helps drivers avoid speeding tickets. Leeds University calculated that Britain could see up to 12 per cent reduction in injuries from road accidents, equating to thousands of people walking away from collisions unharmed or avoiding crashes altogether. The European Transport Safety Council has also calculated it could reduce deaths by 20 per cent. There are roughly 1,700 deaths on British roads annually, and the figures suggest that if the technology was adopted across the board in the UK it could save 340 lives. -

Agree, whilst no fog we have had more sunlight PM (he said with bright sun warming his back). I have been monitoring our home solar panels now in for 10 months. We have had a modest amount of benefit over winter but a step change in April with double the monthly benefit.

I needed last than a year's cover and got full cover, including EU for less than £20. I only expected to need it for 6 months.

Had a dull thought just now. Car is outside, computer is on, will nip out and ...... Dull? Yup, my new SD Card arrives today and will need to nip out and ...... Fortunately I had another cup of coffee which sharpened the brain cell.

And I was hoping for a comparison 😄 -
I've got the MX5 (1993) with Driver Guardian Full coverage for a 32 year old car at less than £90 with the 10% renewal discount. They also do multicar cover and one where if you are the driver or passenger in any car, it's covered.

And it's still the AA.

@Cyker, to update the firmware you need to plug it into the computer. When you plug it into the computer the Dashcam goes into protect mode. Spot a problem here? 😆 From their FAQ there is a special way of plugging in the Dashcam. I haven't check to see if you can access other settings. I need to do this to desensitise the G sensing.

You can get exactly the same with Toyota EXCEPT you don’t need to have had the car service !! Just pay the renewal.

I've had a flat battery on a couple of occasions, admittedly do to my own fault. Just the other day I used the tyre inflator in accessory mode and forgot to turn off the car afterwards as I was cleaning it. No radio, no ac, 10 mins later dead. The 12V battery/car is not designed to be used in that mode, does make you wonder why it's there 🤔

12v battery maintenance, issues, etc.

Quite honestly, I don’t see anything. Posting various graphs is fine but sometimes some explanation of what you’re trying to demonstrate is needed 🤔 No idea what those spikes are and why the fact that the battery level seems to return to its previous (12.4v) level is seen as some sort of fault ? Surely if you suspect this (new) Yuasa battery is now faulty then the thing to do is get it tested and get a warranty return ? -
I am getting a MY24 YX this summer and will get a Service plan and 2 years cover.

My son who owns a Yaris hatchback gets 3 years roadside assistance after taking out a service plan. I have the same service plan but I only got 1 year roadside assistance with my Yaris Cross.

I seem to recall reading that the UK had little choice in blanket adoption of EU vehicle safety legislation, otherwise the EU could legitimately prevent UK vehicles from being driven on the continent, which would be a significant issue for many that take their cars over there for holidays.

Yes you're right, 1 hp = 1.01387 bhp. The Din ...is with engine fitted in car, as opposed to a bench test. Therefore 114 hp = 115.58 bhp. -

Toyota Vitz 2001. Reverse beep buzzer inside car.

Hello From Malta. I am Old John, just joined the Toyota Owners Club forum. I drive a Toyota Vitz 2001 A/T model. I wish to 'switch-off' the in-car BEEP-BEEP-BEEP Buzzer when putting the shift lever in the 'R' position. As I intend to fit Reverse Parking Sensors , there would be a cacophany of BEEPS and that would be confusing. I don't want to totally disarm the Beep Buzzer completely as it serves various other warnings. I wonder if any members have any suggestions from past experiences about this difficulty I am experiencing. Thanks in advance for any advice given. Kind regards, Old John -
Fantastic, love that generation of Aygo as well. My family think I’m nuts, and my kids bemoan when I get all gooey eyed over one. I’m not in the market for a car at the moment but I do keep my eyes on the ground if something special (Aygo) comes along, so many red ones for sale, category cars, or ones without all the gadgets and gizmos. Aygo’s are fetching strong money at the moment, and the C1 and 107/108 just don’t have the same “buzz” about them! Good luck with the Aygo!

Nice, it's a shame this isn't an official UK model. What's the si with spares and service?

That’s what I liked about ford, you could renew each year if you had your car checked/serviced at a participating dealership, can’t remember what it cost, but it was cheaper that the AA ect…
