Assuming that if you changed the big end shells that the big end was <if my vocabulary was any smaller, it would be nearly as small as my genitals>ed.

If it was just changing the shells may not necissarily be enough. If the crank pins were <if my vocabulary was any smaller, it would be nearly as small as my genitals>ed too then they may have picked up immediately and buggered them too for example. If you know how to replace the shells I'm also assuming that you knew to oil them initially for 1st start up (if you didn't that could also have done the bearings.

Wouldn't have expected it to be making a knocking noise just since the bearings have been changed

yeah mate oiled them up and first start up was fine...sat for a further week til it was ready for mot n tax and knocked on first start up then but also all oil would have drained to the sump after a week so i took no notice of it.....since the clutch is slipping it over revs and thats when i first heard the 'rattle'...gutted!!.. dad has since said maybe the crank shaft needs replacing..the main beairings seem fine since there is oil pressure...so maybe crank shaft?? labour killer though!! cheers

Take it your mate measured the big end journals or at least Plastigauged it to check what oil clearance you have ??

In that case I'd be agreeing with your dad and saying the crank is up the swanny (I can learn Kparris although I have extremely small genitals and my frustration makes me swear a lot. Do you always mock the afflicted ;) )

Bearings should be mirror finished. If they look at all dull they've probably taken a significant enough level of wear to knock during running
