Car Using Oil

hi, i checked my oil on the dipstick this morning and it was at lower than the minimum mark. i only serviced it approx 3k miles ago. there's no signs of anything like the head gasket going or out. my car is a toyota celica 1.8 140 vvti 2002. is it a known factor for them to use this much oil? or if not has anyone ideas of what it could be? cheers...

140's were shocking on oil and suffered from oval bore which caused burning oil the only way to fix is a new engine people will say just get new pistons but that wont do jack as its the boars that go oval..toyota did extend the warranty to seven years or 112k..

so your options are a new engine or keep an eye on the oil and top it up

Sadly you have fallen victim to the oil burning issue. Every 140 engine 1999-2002 have a design flaw, that can cause the issue, but not all engines develop it.

You can keep filling the oil up & check it very regularly, as you could develop the death rattle! Ideally though you do need a new engine as suggested.

DO NOT buy a recon. Buy an engine from a car being broken, but make sure its a 03 plate car onwards, as these were fitted with revised pistons.

Sorry to give such bad news & sorry you are sadly another victim of this.

What has happened is that the Piston Rings are gunged up with burnt oil deposits. This is due to insufficient oil runways in the Pistons themselves leading to "hot spots".

For the cost of buying and then fitting a used face lift Engine, you might want to consider part chopping the 140 for a newer example. For a start, you'll gain a much nicer interior and better front Brakes.

Check and top up your oil EVERY time you fill up with Petrol.

I have a similar issue , my compression is 60-180-180-180 . Is it that hard to tear it down and replace the rings, looking at pulling the motor looks like a hell of a project in itself.
