Auris 2.2 D-4D T180 - Head Gasket

So I bought a second hand Auris from a dealer in Kent. Extremely pleased with it. Just what I was looking for. Good looking body, nice interior, very quick.

After a few days of having it I decided I would take it out and give it some welly up the local by-pass. When doing so I noticed that after a while the heating indicator on the dash board was flashing saying the car was over-heating. This immediately set alarm bells ringing (could be head gasket). So I got my friend who is a mechanic to have a look at it and we found that the coolant level was extremely low. This is odd as cars should never use a lot of coolant and if they do it is usually because something is wrong. However he noticed that the radiator looked as if it was new (the car is HPI clear) so this could have meant that when the radiator was replaced and when the coolant was filled up there could have been an air lock in the lines meaning the header tank would empty some time after. So I just ignored this and filled the header tank up with water as a temporary measure. The mechanic friend recommended that I go into Toyota and have a vehicle inspection done.

I took his advice and booked the car in for a vehicle inspection at £59.00 for the first hour and £79.00 per hour after that, which I thought was fairly reasonable. Got a phone call a day later.

Toyota: "Bad news Mr Munday your going to need a new engine"

Me: "WTF??"

It turns out that the head gasket had blown completely and I needed an engine re-build.

Toyota: "But theres some good news Mr Munday. Toyota have extended the warranty on the engine (Just the engine) on this particular model to 100,000 miles or 8 years old so the work wont cost you a penny"

Me: "Thank god"

It turns out that Toyota have realised they have cocked up with certain models of the Auris regarding the head gaskets and have extended a warranty to cover the problem. So now my car is in the garage having a three quater engine re-build (Head, Head gasket, Pistons, Rings, Alternator etc) at no cost to me.

I am warning people with this car especially people with the same model as me to go and pay the £59.00 to have Toyota run a vehicle inspection which includes the block test and get the potential problem soretd for free before ot becomes a bigger issue.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Any questions?

Its a very well known issue, if you look into the RAV4 or Avensis forums you will find thread after thread on it.

Glad your sorted, they have replaced 1,000's of engines now.

I have the same engine as yours (albeit an SR180), so I keep a close check on the oil & coolant levels. Touch wood, it's been fine so far . . . . . . .

Maybe they dont make as big a ***** up in a engine design.

This problem should have been sorted in development.

As they had a big issue with the pedal problem the last thing they would need is bad publicity for their engines..

likewise i have an SR180 which i bought second hand from Toyota like yourself will just keep an eye on it and its good to kno the engine warranty is 100k or 8 years anyway.

Although like Acetip says issues like these should have been noticed in the design n development stage, not many a year after the cars have been sold.

in an ideal world but you can guarantee that when you start producing 100,000s of things it will throw up issues that never occurred in testing.

Thats very true. but they have tried several ways of sorting the problem from rebuilds to replacement engines,and they have still failing in service .

some are on their third engines. what ever is going on.It must be soul destroying for owners. yes i know its costing the owner nothing but what about the worry and concern it may happen again.

+1 - Rover K series head gaskets, Saab oil sump issues, Mazda diesel engines been an absolute disaster with big end failures and DPFs. VAG group had lots of issues with oil pumps on the 2.0 TDI - and the injectors on the 170 bhp PD version of that engine with siemens injectors - complete disaster.

VAG had to recall the 170 2.0 PD TDIs over the injector issue - but of course not until lots of huffing and puffing from owners. Oh and finally there was the Isuzu Troopers with the 3.0 common rail engine - big issues with those too.

I can add Ford and Vauxhall problems with EGR valves. My C-Max had this problem which I think can be related to short trips and steady driving. I note that Toyota diesel engines are also prone to the same problem which is why I changed to petrol this time. I have used diesel cars for years but the quest for low polution has resulted in many hi tec engine controls. The old engines could be a bit smokey but were very reliable.

I'm very grateful for your post. I own factory ordered Auris, which I've been looking after since owning it 2007, when I ordered it from the dearler. I've been taking it for servicing since then every 6 months, to either Toyota or to other reputable garages. It's mileage just passed 100K, but it mostly due to travel on Motorways.

The heater hasn't been working for the past couple of weeks. After much research and coming across your post in this forum, I was horrified that my car might have developed the same problem. Today, my local garage confirmed that the coolant tank is burst due to increased pressure from blown up head gasket. This will cost a small fortune to fix it. Your post gave me some hope that Toyota might fix the engine under the extended engine guarantee mentioned in your post.

I would be extremely grateful if you could send me some more information on this, as I need to be armed with this when I take the car to Toyota to fix it. I looked at their website and there is no mentioned for this what so ever.

Toyota's good will extended warranty to cove the HG issues and excess oil usage due to carbon build up is 112k or 7 years providing you can show reasonable serving!

Take it the main Toyota dealer for them to check! This should result in a new engine FOC 👍👀

I plan to take it to the Toyota Dealer, but I'm worried that they'll decline it. I need some hard evidence for this extended warranty. The additional difficulty is that the car is at a garage 7 miles away and was advised not to drive it any more as it might damage the cylinders. Can you help me please if you have any policy or link to it, so that I have it in my hand when I call them?

I had a similar piece of luck buying my Sr180 in March. I bought the car with 75K on the clock for around £5200, the garage gave me a terrible trade in price for my motor, and would hardly budge on the price as they new that the car was well priced for the year and mileage (at the time, it was). I came home happy with the car, but not happy I hadnt been able to do better haggling.....Until I opened up the log book and fumbled through the previous owners paperwork and found a letter dated from Toyota in Oct 2011 stating that they were sorry for the troubles and that the engine had been replaced FOC. So my car engine only had at the the time I bought it 18K on the clock!

I've just got rid of my oil burner as I can't stand the stress or worry with these engines.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread and a the others on the same subject. My head gasket went on my '98 Auris SR180 on New Year's Day. When I finally got home on the back of an AA truck I googled the problem to try and find out how much it would cost to get fixed and this was at the top of my search results.

I have only had the car 6 months and couldn't afford a massive repair bill. It was only because I saw what everyone was saying on the forums that I actually went to Toyota to get the problem sorted.

I got a phone call yesterday saying they are fitting a new engine and I can have my clutch done for £300 as labour is already covered. Well pleased, thank you!

Hello i'm new to the forum

I've just noticed a lot of posts on head gaskets going on the toyota auris. This has happened to mine this week but my car warranty ran out and I didn't replace it after the 5 years time. I bought the car in 2008 so it isn't that old.

I didn't get the car serviced last two times after the warranty as I thought they did a poor job previously and it was expensive.

Should I go to toyota to get it fixed. Do you think i could ask them to contribute towards it. this seems to be a common fault.
