Gear Changes

Hi all,

I have a toyota corolla E12 (07), just hitting 100K on the clock, serviced 3 months ago for the past week or two when changing gears it doesn't seem to going with clutch fully down, sometimes changing from 1 -2, 2-3 will be hard but going 3-2 or 2-1 will be hard, not so much of a problem with changing 3-4 or 4-5, I'm not sure if the gearbox or clutch is on it way out or is it something simple as white grease needing on the gears or gear box oil needing a top up?

Thanks in advance.

You could try have the box oil changed to see if that make a difference if not it could be the fingers on the pressure plate getting old

thanks, how easy is to change the gearbox oil and check the fingers on the pressure plate?

Just looked in the haynes manual and it doesn't clearly say unless I'm missing something.

Hi,

First check your service records and see if you were charged for 2 ltrs of gearbox oil last time.

Typical service interval is 40k miles with the correct grade of oil, usually 75w 90 gl4 or gl5, but check your handbook.

Checking the oil level is done by the plug at the front of the engine, when full it just runs out of that hole; the drain plug at the bottom of the gearbox.

Checking the pressure plate fingers cannot be done short of stripping the gearbox out, as far as I know.

As the fingers get worn then the more pedal pressure is needed to press it down as they present less leverage.

You have not mentioned the gear lever assembly and the 2 cables and linkages on top of the rear of the gearbox, have you lubricated them and checked that they move freely - spray white grease is good for those areas with lots of plastic and rubber.
