Squealing Noise From Rear Of Vehicle

Hi,

My old Auris (2008) developed a fault after two years where there was a loud squealing from the rear of the car. Despite numerous visits to the dealer no one could solve the issue. It got so bad that people would stop and look. It happened randomly, so no one could work out if it was brakes or tyres or what. After a year of trying, I replaced it in 2011 with a new Auris.

Three weeks ago I heard the dreaded noise from this vehicle. Since then it has happened three times. There is no reason why - once it was at slow speed, another when parking, another when travelling at about 40 miles or so.

Has anyone any idea why this happens?

If there is no reason - I think I will give up with Toyota - which is a shame as I have had them since 1981!

Not without more details; You're not leaving the handbrake partly on or something are you?? Or do you have a gravel/stone chip driveway and maybe a stone has gotten trapped in the brakes??

Our 2011 Auris always had more brake dust on the back wheels than the front, contrary to the norm. Googling this threw up other people who had the same, and some said the pads were made of different material and wore quicker. If your car is on it's original pads they could simply be worn. Personally I'd strip down and inspect the brake components as a first step, they might just need lubricated.

Nope, handbrake off, no gravel and the dealer before stripped the brakes and replaced them...still had the noise.

If the syptoms are similar, then get the handbrake cable checked.

I thought it was the front but instead, turned out to be the rear nearside.

Got really cheesed off with mine during slow speeds, parking or certain right turns. So, I got my mechanic to strip everything down to do with the brakes

because I couldn't be bothered with it anymore and he said it was the handbrake cable causing it and voila. No more noise.

Don't think it is the same. You talk about a womp womp noise - mine is a very loud sqeal/ whistle noise. It is not there all the time, sometimes just for a few seconds.

So - no other Auris owners have this issue then?

I can well understand the "womp womp" noise being a stiff handbrake cable causing the shoes to rub against the drum and generating the noise. In your other post, however, you said that it went away when yiu pressed the footbrake and I don't quite follow that. On your model the handbrake works with cable operated shoes inside a top hat section of the rear disc with normal pad function against the disc for the footbrake. Seems to me application of the footbrake would have no effect on the handbrake.

Think the posts are getting mixed up.

The noise - on both the old car and this - was not related in anyway to braking. It happened when moving. With the old car they tried everything - including replacing brakes - but nothing worked.

Rear passenger side is it .... Mine did that I noticed the disc was incredibly hot ... Got back to home took it to the garage the next day got on the ramp I looked around the brakes couldn't see anything at first ... And there was a slight binding as the pad had moved at an angle rather than straight and the wear indicator was touching the disc regreased the slidders and carriers put it all back together never been a problem since that was at 12,000 miles on the clock now on nearly 70,000 no issues whatsover since

Ok - that sounds more like it then. I assume you had the squealing/ whistle noise rather than the 'womp womp' the other post referred to?

The service is due in March, so I will ask them to check and give them a copy of your post.
