Car goes forward when in Neutral and Reverse mode by default?

Hi all,

Whenever I put my car in Neutral or Reverse it goes forward by default.

I have to hit the break pedal in Neutral to stop it.
And I have to press the accelerator a little to make it go in reverse in the Reverse mode.

It was on a slope mind you so don't know if this happens to you guys.

It is an automatic Toyota Auris VVT-i model.

Is this supposed to happen with Toyota Auris cars? Do you get the same thing?

Every car (despite the make) with automatic gearbox has gone slowly forward when in neutral.

Thanks,

It's just I am new to this and it surprised me when it just went forward.

I had another automatic by another brand of car and it only went in reverse when I pressed the accelerator (while in Reverse mode) and in Neutral it stayed in a stand-still mode.

With my Auris it only stops rolling forward when I hit the breaks. And in Reverse mode I have to use both Accelerator and break-pad together to control it. Otherwise if I put in Reverse and don't use the accelerator it rolls foward.

Is this normal? Does this happen to others cars here too?

I am just trying to be sure on how it's supposed to behave :)

I have driven more autos than manuals and my experience is that when you engage d from p,the car starts moves forward(slowly) as you lift off the brake pedal and doesn't move in n (and again moves when in r as u lift off the brake). I have the auris auto hybrid and behaves as above.

On a slope quite possibly depending upon severity.

Isn't this because the Auris Multi-Mode Transmission ('auto') isn't an auto but a manual gearbox with a robotic clutch? I'm talking only about the Auris MMT here, not the hybrid.
