Cold Start Problem

Hi, I'm hoping someone on here might be able to shed some light on the problems I'm having starting my Corolla Verso. I have created a post in the Verso forum but I'm not sure if it might be better suited in here with it being a 'Corolla' Verso 2007.

I've recently bought this 2.2 D4D Diesel and it sounds like the starter motor is having a problem, but the garage I bought it from tell me it's ok and it's normal to do this for up to 25 seconds. I strongly suspect this isn't right?!?
Here is a short video of the start up sound -

It will do this when started from cold, once started it seems ok and if I turn it off and straight back on it fires straight up.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

I take it that start up in the video wasn't from cold - or was it? Because you never gave the heater plugs a chance to warm up before you hit the starter.

Hi, thanks for reply, yes that is from cold. It's a push button start.

For a stone cold start you should leave the ignition switched on for a longer period to let the heater plugs warm up properly before you press the starter button. That clattering noise you hear isn't your starter, it sounds like diesel engine fuel injection clatter caused by a cold engine, once the combustion chambers heat up the noise disappears.

Next time you start it from cold turn the key to the lights on position and leave it there for a couple of minutes before you hit the starter. There's an orange light on the dash which tells you when the heater plugs are on but even after that extinguishes wait another 30 seconds or so then start it and see if there's any improvement. If it's just the same it's time for some investigation.

Many thanks for the detailed reply, very much appreciated.

I know what you mean re waiting a while before starting, my Dad has an old diesel van and you turn the key one click and wait for the plug light to go out before fully turning the ignition. My problem is I have a push button start so I can't do that procedure. If I push the button without holding the clutch the lights come on, but the plug light never changes like you would expect in a key ignition.
