4.2 D4D - Fuel Filter Pump Wont Go Stiff!! :-D

Excuse the possible innuendo but after changing the fuel filter the plunger on top goes stiff but after a few days needs re-doing again? Any Ideas? Looking underneath there are no visible fuel leaks and non in or around filter / engine bay? I also think this is causing the car to hesitate under acceleration, once its pumped to death it drives fine, after a few days back to square one? Is it a possible air bubble in the system that just needs to be worked out or something else? Any help is very much appreciated!!! 🙂
