Rav 4 2008 smoky exhaust

Hi everyone,  I'm a new member and was looking for some advice. 

I have a 2008 rav 4 2.2 diesel,  that's developed a problem with a smoky exhaust when accelerating and if I rev it when its stationary. 

I've spoken to a few mechanics and they've come up with different causes including injector blockages.

Hopefully it's not a major fault. Any information would be great, thanks.

The colour of the smoke will narrow down possible issues. Is the smoke blue (and often smells "oily"), white or black / dark grey? How many miles on the clock and when was the air filter and fuel filter last replaced?
