yaris d4d automatic warning light / drive lost

My 2007 yaris diesel auto red warning light  - cog with an exclamation mark in the middle came on yesterday. A few minutes later on a roundabout I could not pull away (in drive) - neutral light on dash flashed but no power to wheels. After a few minutes it started again and I managed to drive away from the roundabout. After 20 miles or so it did it again.

Any ideas? I've looked in vain for an auto transmission dipstick. I'm reluctant to spend a lot of money on it given its age - but other than this issue it runs fine. Only done 75K miles.

Any help appreciated
