Yaris 2008 1.4D lost keys

Hi everyone

In a moment of madness I managed to lose the only key to my wife's 2008 Yaris. As you can imagine I am well and truly in the doghouse at the moment. The local Toyota dealer has advised I need a new body ecu, immobiliser, keys and locks at a cost circa £1500 but l have heard that possibly there are companies out there that can recode the existing ecu etc to new keys. Has anyone heard of a company that could do this and if so can they let me know their details. You will be saving my life!!!!!!!

When cars were supplied new there would have been a small metal tag usually attached to the key ring. This is the key number which main dealers can use to produce new keys.

As an outside chance have you still got the tag anywhere - car document folder, for example. Sometimes the key number was noted in the front of the service book.

I always keep a note of the key number (in the service book and on my phone) when we change our cars.

Not a recommendation but just one result of a Google search.

PS, never lose your keys or do anything where you might need assistance on a Friday. 😂

If you lose ALL the keys on any Toyota you are up the creek. The key tag only gets you a key number, the key number is the least of the problems, when you lose all the keys the only way is new ECU/Lock set, OR find a locksmith who can re-programme the ECU, I have a chap who is very good, but he cannot do all models, Aygo is a particular problem car, the whole dash has to come out to change the theft relay. It would have been far cheaper to have a spare key, never ever ever only have one key to the car, you are in for a big bill if you lose the only key

The only time we have the service book in the car is when we take it in for service.

Otherwise keeping the car documentation folder in the car is unnecessary weight, and, if the car is broken into or stolen, risks your personal data especially if things like the V5C, service invoices, etc are in the folder.

Check if your car insurance has key cover? Some policies do as standard and other times they sneak it in there for you to pay for without realising.. insurance has to be good for something so I'd give that a shot?

Otherwise you might be able to find an accredited auto locksmith with the kit to come out and programme a new key for you (might need to order a new blank one online though?). Rarely makes sense to buy the kit needed to do it yourself for a one off, but someone like that can do it for next to nothing.

Otherwise... the stealership should be able to help/

Sorry but lol, a proper locksmith can cut a key to a lock, ecu can be cleared and the immobilizer reprogrammed no issue with the right tool you can even do it manually if you have an hour to spare

A dealer can pull a key number off techdoc if they wanted

No joy with the insurance as apparently I never ticked the lost key box on my policy😒 The dealership has said they can cut me keys to chassis which will open the car and work the ignition but obviously it will not start the car.

If you can get a key cut with a chip in it, all is good, you may be able to perform the manual immobilizer learn

Long shot, I have credit card insurance.  It covers lots more besides. On a house move we mislaid passports and later my daughter mislaid a house key. All were covered and no excess.

Morning all

I am still alive but still very much in the dog house as keys have not turned up. It appears I do not have the tag number for the keys so Toyota can only cut me a key to open the car. I have asked around locally if anyone can Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';font-size:15px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;text-align:left;text-decoration:none;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;word-spacing:0px;">reprogramme a new key to the existing ecu etc but no joy. I wonder if anyone knows of someone in the UK who could do it if l send the ecu etc to them. Clutching at straws now!!!!!

Get a key cut from Toyota, a standard non-remote key this will have a chip embedded in it - you can then try the manual programming method as i stated above

if you are OK with computers, and have a laptop, get yourself a Mini VCI

  • 4 weeks later...

I too always have this fear, as when I bought my 07 Yaris D-4D it came with only one key which as most of you are probably aware is a smart key. I looked into getting a spare but the dealers told me they would require the car to investigate and that I may need a new ECU etc etc, and as I have never trusted dealers assumed may would turn into a definite would for certain. I then contacted local key specialists  none of which could help, there are firms that can duplicate my smart key but it would mean a long drive as I live down in Cornwall. So for now I have attached my smart key to a bright red Toyota Yanyard and wear it around my neck at all times whilst I am in my car and never remove it for any reason....👌

I feared this very occurrence happening to me, particularly as my nearly new Aygo only came with one remote key, and have a thread here asking if getting a duplicate was possible.  After a lot of help from the members here I found I was able to order another remote key at around the £50 mark from my Toyota dealership, I needed the V5 to be able to order the key.  There is then a charge of £59.80, I think for the key to be programmed.

I did look at buying another key and programming it myself but with my luck I would probably lock myself out of the car with both keys.

I know this does not solve the problem here but some might, like me, think this precaution is money well spent.

My remote key is the two button sort so other keys might be more expensive to buy.
