Auris.... dead :(

So I have a 2014 Toyota Auris Hybrid. 1.8vvti

At the end of November last year, the brake master cylinder died/ Lights on everywhere. Was still driving ok but took it to Toyota and they quoted around £4k to fix it. 

It's been sat on my car ever since as I don't have over £4k to fix the car. It also has no MOT as I'd need the repairs to be done before I could MOT it. 

I tried to sell it back to Toyota but they basically said... not interested. 

So I'm stuck with a useless piece of blue metal on my drive. 

Help? Just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation and what you did to resolve it?

Hi Caz,4k to fix it makes it s a no go obviously.You could get alternative quotes by trying a few mobile repairer's as the car is unusable. You could phone around a few garages for other quotes. If this proves unsuccessful then there are a few ways you could consider to get rid of your Auris without spending £4k and get some money back.

1. Sell it as a non runner there's is definitely a market for cars that don't run, especially popular models like the Toyota Auris. People who fix cars themselves or scrap yards might be interested. You may get a low price but its off your hands.Advertise it on one of these as examples

Facebook marketplace. Gumtree (https://www.gumtree.com/cars-vans-motorbikes/cars) or eBay Motors (https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/bn_1839037)

Scrap car comparison websites (https://scrapcarcompare.co.uk/)

£4k from the Toyota dealership sounds expensive. It's worth getting quotes from independent mechanics who specialise in Toyotas. Replacing a master cylinder typically isn't that expensive, so you might find a much better price.

 Potentially get the car fixed for a reasonable price and then sell it or keep it.There's no guarantee the independent quote will be much lower, and you'll still need to pay for repairs before selling.

If the car is in good condition otherwise, you could consider breaking it for parts. People are always looking for used Toyota parts, and you could potentially make more money this way than selling it as a whole non runner potentially make more money than selling it whole. Hope this helps and maybe other members will have more ideas.:smile:

The reason for totally dead, first thing to check is just the 12v Battery. However you've still got the original problem and the traction Battery isn't going to like standing 12 months, so it's needing serious investment!

You need to get the fault codes read by an independent.

Does the car still start and run OK?

Did they tell you what was wrong?

You need to find out specifically what is wrong and what needs doing to fix it. £4k is ridiculous and my first thought is that you must have dropped the car off while wearing your solid gold suit and diamonds tiaras.

I was not wearing any gold 😉 

The car starts and runs fine. It drives ok, it stops ok! However, there are lights illuminated on the dash - ABS, Traction Control, Engine Warning Light, and I think there was one other as well.  A friend of mine has a Code Reader and it gave C1203 and C1345 error codes He could not clear them - they kept coming back.

The Toyota garage made this comment on my vehicle inspection Warning lamps on,reqs new brake booster with master cylinder - (hopefully I've attached an image from the healthcheck form as well! ) and as you can see they have quoted over £3500 just for the part. 

I spoke to them to see if they'd buy the car back from me as it is (is a '64 plate but done less than 65k miles) and they say no. They've also said I shouldn't drive it until it's repaired as although the brakes seem to be working now, they can't guarantee that they won't stop working so it'll be potentially unsafe to do so. In the meantime... the MOT has expired (car has been sat on my drive since early December). I'm a bit stuck now! Can't sell the car without an MOT, can't get the MOT without the car being fixed, can't afford the £4k plus that Toyota would doubtless charge by the time they've added on labour.... 

So... the question is: does anyone know of any garages around the Warrington (Cheshire) area which might be prepared to have a look at it and give me a quote? Our usual place is normally pretty good but he won't touch it cos it's a hybrid.... we tried another place in Warrington (CJ Autoservices) but they took the details and never got back to me. 

Help!

I've attached a page from Toyota manual about C1203. It could well be a fault in the brake booster ECM and the dealer no doubt would charge crazy price though an independent would do it for far less if you can find a good one. The linear valve offset calibration procedure needs techstream or a capable scan tool

Mobility mechanic can diagnose the fault and confirm if it’s from the booster or anything else. There are many cars like this in scrap yards or other places like eBay offer used boosters prices start from £200. Buy used and diy or mechanic will do it. Replace brake fluid and run brake system bleed. Research information how to, become these cars has specific procedures when bleeding brakes, this one gone wrong alone can cause booster failure. 
This shows not be a reason if a car is in good shape to be scrapped, it’s just one faulty part that needs replaced. New in dealer is expensive but there are always alternatives.

I have heard of people coming a cropper buying used parts that look identical but don't work as the ECU is programmed for a different model such as a prius, so the part numbers need to be identical. The cost of new isn't prohibitive I believe but that price quoted by the dealer looks like they're taking the p***.

So... it's been a few weeks and I've contacted a couple of garages locally who claim to be able to work on Hybrid vehicles and none of them has come back to me - I don't think they want to do the work 😕 

I also tried a couple of the 'we buy any car' type places and they won't buy it without an MOT or if a service is due..... the local Toyota garage have said they won't buy it back off me, either. 

I'm going to have to try and sell the car as it is. It's been sat on my drive for almost 4 months now! 

Anyone know anyone who'd be willing to give me a fair price for it?

Cosmetically in good condition. Mid-blue in colour. 

According to Toyota needs brake booster with master cylinder so now has no MOT (expired 26/12/23), service also due

 

I don't use the car enough to justify spending money on it so am just looking for sensible offers to cut my losses!

Hi Caz, Someone on the forum may look to buy it but i would still consider trying what i suggested in my reply above. It really is a pain when this happens as the cost of repairs make it uneconomical. Have a look online at similar Auris prices with milage age etc and then deduct the repair costs and that will give you a better idea of what you can expect to achieve in price. Had the car been serviced by a Toyota dealer in the year leading up the fault occuring? If so then the fault should have been covered by the 'Relax' warranty. I find that some dealers sometimes don't point this out and will happily quote a huge price for repairs but 'forget' to mention the warranty might cover it..

As it sits it is worth scrap value, stick it on eBay or FB marketplace as spares or repairs you may get £500 for it

If you can post some pictures here of exterior and interior and your asking price I maybe interested. , or someone else too. But this car won’t be worth much more than already been suggested as there is a very high risk of new batteries needed plus the brake pump etc , towing.

Thanks for your help an suggestions, folks. I put it on marketplace earlier..... it has already gone. Got £4k for it..... and yes, the guy who bought it was fully aware of the issues, but he was a mechanic and reckoned he could fix it!

brake booster/ pump is known issues in Prius 3 world.  the NHTSA release mandatory recall for Prius 2010-2015 and prius V. toyota replace them for free,  not sure why europe don't get recall for the same Japanese made prius.  auris and prius are almost identical hybrid system.
