Fuel filler flap

Could one of you kind Mk4 Yaris owners tell me …

when you open the fuel filler flap is held open with some sort of spring mechanism or does it swing freely ?

While I don't have a Mk4 Yaris, all Toyota's that I have had, have a spring to pop it out initially as you pull the release. But opening it further, it is just "flapping" freely. There is nothing to hold it fully open.

Yes it springs open a little bit just enough for you to be able to manually open it fully to approximate right angle to the bodywork.

I filled up today and, being a windy day, the flap felt looser than I remembered hence my question.

Must admit, fords easyfuel system is much better, fuel flap is unlocked so long as the car is, and there’s no fuel cap to undo, Toyotas fuelling seems it’s never changed from the sixties, mind you, I suppose other cars are the same..

Not for every model, my 2008 Focus has unrestricted access to it

Only going by my two fiestas and puma, but it was definitely locked on the puma when the car was locked..

What year? They just introduced that system around 2008 (with mk2 facelifting) so maybe some time later they figured out that it allows you to steal fuel or sabotage the fuel tank without leaving any traces if you have proper funnel and introduced the locking. It was used for some diesels with "wet" DPF where the opening of the filler flap caused injection of the eolys fluid into the tank.

Yes, these are loose and in windy weather can surprise you. There is something like a light spring tension, black flat spring attached to the hinge on older Auris at least.
