2014 Auris Mk2 Radio/Sat Nav Head Unit Swap Like for Like

Hi Folks,

Newbie here, as per the Topic, I just wondered if anyone has any information regarding swapping out a head unit, as opposed to swapping head unit and extension module, and the need for coding (if any)? My head unit is model number 86140-02330, it has a broken screen, so the question is would another 86140-02330 plug n play with my existing extension module without any need for coding? If not, is it better to buy head unit and module together, or, how does one go about 'coding'?

To demonstrate, I've attached a photo of my 86140-02330 head unit and extension module, and a 86140-02330 head unit only available on e-Bay.

Alternatively would there be any loss of funtionality by fitting other model numbers fitted to 2014 Mk2 Auris's, such as 86140-02030, 86140-02230 etc?

Any useful information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Phil,if you're replacing the head unit with an identical model (8614002330), it's more likely to be a plug and play swap without the need for coding, assuming there are no changes to the car's firmware or software settings. However, if you're considering replacing it with a different model, ring a car audio shop or a dealership familiar with Toyota's systems to ensure compatibility and potentially avoid the need for coding or additional modifications.

Ensure that the wiring harness of the new head unit matches the wiring of your car. This includes connections for power, Speakers, aerial, and any other accessories.

Check if the new head unit is compatible with other integrated systems, such as steering wheel controls, backup camera, or parking sensors. You may need additional adapters or modules to maintain functionality. If your current head unit supports bluetooth for hands free calling, make sure the replacement unit also has this feature and that it can pair with your phone smoothly.

If your current head unit has a built in navigation system, make sure that the replacement unit either has a compatible navigation system or supports alternative navigation options, such as smartphone integration.

Depending on the compatibility between the new head unit and your car's systems, you may need to perform coding or programming to ensure proper functionality. This usually involves using specialised software to configure the settings of the new unit to match your cars.Hope this helps:smile:.

Morning Bob,

Many thanks for your extremely helpful reply, I had intended replacing the head unit with the exact same model, laggy though it was, but reading your reply further started me thinking about an aftermarket unit with a more responsive navigation system. It seems the difference between a replacement 8614002330 and an aftermarket unit, with Android and free map updates, and the necessary patching cables could be £200+, there seem to be a couple of UK websites, (such as sigmacarstereo.com) who invite photos of your own existing installation and reqs to advise an aftermarket solution, but thanks again, your advice is gratefully received and has given me food for thought. Whichever option I choose I will post the results here, and add some more photos as I go, they might help others in a similar situation. Cheers again Bob.

Regards,

Phil.

I have a very similar unit (ref 86140-02010), it truly looks the same from outside.

I recently installed a second hand navigator (I think what you call extension module). No problems whatsoever, but indeed it was the model meant for that head unit.

I know it is not exactly what you asked...

It does actually answer it as it backs up Bob's comment (although I had no doubt) re. a straight swap of head unit so thank you.

Hi Phil,

I noticed in your initial post that you said the radio screen had cracked.  This might be an option to get it fixed which would be at half the cost of the £200 + you mentioned for a replacement unit - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305436642463?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20230823115209%26meid%3Df11b4ce840744ffa965eb74d85839cb9%26pid%3D101800%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D305436642463%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D4375194%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2SignedOut%26brand%3DToyota&_trksid=p4375194.c101800.m5481&_trkparms=parentrq%3Ad36e713b18e0ac6a06083f57ffff8396|pageci%3A1db8cc33-f8f5-11ee-9433-d65f1f1593ea|iid%3A1|vlpname%3Avlp_homepage

This chap has 100% feedback for his screen repairs, and he seems to give a quick service too from the customer comments.

Although the screen in my Auris is not cracked or damaged in any way, it does not respond to the touch. (I don't have sat-nav). So I'll probably send it to this firm if all other options fail - as they have done so far.

Thanks John, gives me another option.👍 On my system the navigation was laggy and counter-intuitive, I've been looking at aftermarket solutions. I'll post results when done, but a screen repair and an aftermarket plug & play module is a possibility. Thanks again.

Update, bought & fitted a replacement touch screen digitiser installed latest maps update for £35 from eBay (installed Map was 2014v2), and my Touch2 with Go has been transformed. Touch screen and navigation much more responsive.

all of a sudden my touch 2 & Go would not come on, found a blown 20A fuse for the radio, replaced it but lost the bluetooth and maps.

Looks like the satnav module had failed/died, looks like I am going to need a replacement unit too.

Well, only thing I can think of is earlier I was doing a 3point turn and stalled, steering wheel light came on the dash, I then started drove off and parked.

Only thing I can think of is some sort of a surge, if there's such a thing.

Not had a chance to remove the unit, I am think just replace the satnav unit, not sure if it has to be specific and any will work with the same connectors.
