Yaris D4d Clutch Judder

Hi there! I'm having trouble with a Yaris D4D. Bought new in December 2004 (so still under warranty), now with 1600 miles on the clock. Clutch slave cylinder changed at 700 miles (judder and squeak), clutch changed (inc flywheel) at 960 miles, and now all to be changed again for same fault - judder on take-up. This time promised 'modified Japanese parts' by the dealer - anyone heard of this problem and fix? The car judders away from a standstill regardless of how you try to drive round the fault - but not every time, about 50% of the time usually. Two faulty clutches in 1600 miles - is this likely? Dealer being helpful, but not fixing the problem so far.

Glad I bought into a 'relliable' brand - this is my first Toyota! I wont mention the squeaks and faulty CD palyer (oh, OK, I will then!).

Hi,

I've had the same problem with my 1.0GS for a while now. Toyota did not want to know as the car was out of warranty. An independant clutch specialist could not replicate the fault but I'm certaimly not imagining it.

With the new trading standards rules If a fault occurs within the 1st 6 months (either new or used) it is deemed to have been present at purchase.

Return the car, keys and logbook to the dealer together with a letter why you are rejecting it.

:unsure: My current D-4D is from October and, um, I have had no problems whatsoever. The one I had before... no problems whatsoever... :huh:

It sounds like you've got a (very rare) bad one - create merry hell and make sure you either get it fixed or get a replacement.

Trust me, they're not all like that :yes:

Edit: The only other thing I can think of is your low mileage - my first one did 16,000 miles in 8 months before meeting its untimely end and this one had done almost 6,000 in 5 months ;)

Toyotas are generally very reliable - so you have been unlucky - I've had two Yarii - the first one had a few minor problems but this new one (also bought in December 2004 like you!) has been perfect - no problems whatsoever.

Like they say - all orchards contain at least one bad Apple!

Toyota will fix it for you - just badger them! Thats what your warranty's there fore after all! :thumbsup:

Not sure if its the same problem as I had, but with my 1.0 T2 when starting in 1st the car used to either judder really badly or there was no power at all. The revs would just disappear for a few seconds and then come back. Not a lot of fun at junctions and roundabouts!

Anyway I took it back to the dealer for its 1st year service and they found it was an ecu problem (the car's computer brain), so after replacing that it now works perfectly. No juddering or power loss. Apparently this has occured in a few yaris's so might be what you've got?

Be warned though that the ecu replacement might be quite expensive if you're not still under warranty!! :)

Yep, had the same problem with my 2003 Yaris d4d. It started about 4-6 months after I got the car. Happens as often as yours, about 50% of the time. I took it to Toyota and of course they said they couldn't find anything. I have noticed it happens most on Monday mornings after not being driven for the weekend and more so on "moist" days. I can prevent it from happening if I fan the clutch a little but that's not too good for wear. To me this feels like the traditional clutch chatter syndrome. I had the exact same thing on a 69 mustang fastback I had when I was a kid. The only way I could fix that was to change the clutch. I see you already did that. I've also heard of oil or fluid leakage on the clutch plate causing this. Possibly explaining the reason it comes and goes. that's my standing suspicion here. Please let us know if you figure it out. That's the ONLY thing I've ever been displeased with on my Yarii. :thumbsup:

Thanks folks. I oo seem to think it's worse when wet - not sure how this could happen though.

The car is due back at the dealer for it's second (Japanes this time) clutch early in April (I guess it's being rowed across the Pacific as we speak!), so if it fixes it I'll let you all know. If it doesn't, :ffs: then I'll be looking at getting Toyota to take it back.

Well, It's had it's Japanese clutch and the difference is . . . . unbelievable!

It's exactly how a clutch should behave, smooth easy to find the bite point. Neither of the two French clutches ever felt like this! Anyone got any ideas what the difference between to the Franch and japanes ones are?

So some early grief, hope all now sorted.
