Did you get down to the rolling road on Monday?

no, never took any pics - forgot, lol :D .

yeah, i went down the rolling road - they reckon it's putting out 114bhp. tbh, i'm a bit dubious about that though. their rolling road system seemed very old fashioned - it doesn't provide a rev-range printout, just tells you the power at specific revs. they reckon it peaks at 114bhp @ 7000rpm, and is something like 108 @ 6500. they also don't give you a torque figure. now, when i drive it, it begins to tail off at around 7000rpm - and they didnt quote any figures beyond that point. i dunno, i just think it's odd that it pulls so strongly, and can outrun a golf tdi 150 (up to about 100), new shape golf tdi 140 (all the way) and a mk4 gti turbo (to about 110) with only 114bhp.

but, if that's the case, it must be a very healthy 114bhp :P

Think you'll have to get it on another rolling road, one thats a bit better

Surely it cant produce less power with the mods you've done to it? especially if you can outrun cars with that much BHP....

Then again, you could be right, might have an extremely healthy 114BHP

When was the car last tuned up? If it hasn't been done since the mods were put on, then in theory the mods could lower the bhp instead of increasing it. It should be running at least 120bhp as standard. Can't remember what mods you've got JT but even a zorst and air filter should take it to 130bhp after a bit of tweeking here and there at a specialists. Look in the back of Banzai mag (or another jap performance mag) for some decent rolling roads!

i would've thought it'd be putting out considerably more than 114BHP!

130 seems more in the region i would've thought :D

Ahh well, i'll stick to my 74BHP at the moment

it got tuned just before its MOT about a month ago - it hardly needed adjusting. it's not heavily modded. apparently when the engine was rebuilt, the head was ported - apart from that it's just an exhaust and filter. it should be 120bhp as you say - but that was when it was new. it's 18 years old and done 111k now, so they do lose power through age and wear. i must admit though, i was expecting about 10bhp more. but 114 could well be right. and if it is, then it goes very well :D

My '87 GTI had 176,000 on it when I scrapped it. It was still running about right with a JR filter and Powerflow zorst. It was a bit faster than my mates R reg 106 Rally. That was 100 bhp but only weighs 800ish kg, instead of the my GTI which was about 125-130bhp and 1200ish kg. I never had it on the rolling road so don't know the exact figures.

Have you tried using some RED X in your fuel? Or 100k Boost spray into the air intake?? maybe worth a go. The 100k Boost seemed to make mine run a little bit sweeter when i tried it. No doubt some people on this forum will say stear clear of both of those products, but i thought they helped.

it is running right though - it's quicker than my old one (which had 98k with absolute full history). and like i say - looking at the cars i've come up against with it, i'm happy with the performance, whatever it's putting out. i don't really trust 10k boost, but there's not gonna be much carbon in there - it was only re-done last year.

anyway, i'm trying to get hold of an original airbox setup for it, so i can compare if the induction kit is doing anything - i know some cars don't like them. and it did make a lot of difference when i repositioned the filter, which makes me think it maight be better with the standard setup. we'll just have to see :D

Have you got a cold air intake, or just a filter stuck on the intake pipe at the bulkhead end of the engine. If so, it will probably be sucking in pretty hot air (which can affect performance on certain cars).

The standard box would probably have a cold air feeder from behind one of the headlights like in the GTI. I left half my standard box on (the bottom half) so there was still a cold air feed going to the filter.

You can do a DIY cold air feeder. Get a length S/S tubing from Do It All, and an Army sized tin of baked beans (yes baked beans). Eat em, clean the tin out etc, cut a hole in the bottom of it so the S/S tubing can fit in to it. Seal it using mastic, or weld them together, then slide the tin over your filter. bobs your uncle you've got a cold air intake for about £10. Just polish and then wack a load of stickers on the bean tin and no-one will know the difference.

yep, i've got the filter positioned behind the headlight, in between the Battery (which i imagine will also act as a shield from the heat) and the fuse box, where the original airbox got its air feed from. however, that now means that there is quite a long length of tubing running from the back of the filter to the throttle body.

so it'll be interesting to see which system it likes best
