Rwd Starlet Advice

I have just bought a 1981 RWD 1300 Starlet as my first car. I have put AE86 Alley Cat wheels and a mk1 escort mexico back box ,with the expansion box cut out, on it.

Once I have finished college (June) I will be putting a 4age with twin 40 dcoe webers in it.

I was wondering if I could have some advice on what has been done and what looks good with RWD starlets. Also anything to watch out for would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance

Phil

oooh she looking good!

Loving the creamy beige colour and the 5 door pimp ness.

Can't believe that is your first car - pretty damn cool for a first car.

Ok if you are going for 4age good luck. Unless you are pretty minted and have a keen eye on parts 4age stuff is going to be hard to comeby. Not impossible but pretty rare and may command more money.

If you are going that route then you will need custom engine mounts and a t50 gearbox (yours a 1.3litre with k50 5 speed or 1litre with k40 4 speed?) anyway a 4age will shred the k50 gearbox plus won't mount up properly.

As you will be running on carbs (efi not an option?) you will need the carb manifold.

The above was one of my options for the kp starlet (until i sold it) my other was a 4k stock rod engine with lumpy cam and some twin carbs and that would be pretty lairy. In fact I know of one forsale if you have the 1 litre and needed a performance increase.

or go for a 5k 1/5 litre engine from the liteace as all you will need is the 4k sump and its a good direct fit.

go to www.kp61.net for the starlet owners forum and ;)

hope my rambling is of some use!

It is my frst car. Well it was my mums but I managed to aquire it.

I know where I can get a cheap 4age. manifold and carbs aren't a problem. Raw Engineering do a manifold and I can get carbs off e-bay.

The only problem is the box. Is there no way I can have adapter plates made for my K50 box?

yeah that can be done but if you rag it in anyway the k50 will be toast.

deffo worth getting a T50 gearbox and even a 86 rear axle as that has the option of a diff if you get the right one.

Just a note the stockrod engine I know of has some serious performance and would be nearer to 100bhp and will obviously bolt up to the k50 gearbox. not too much money either about 400-500?? circa

get yourself on kp-61.net dude plenty of info abuot the k50 mating to 4age

the ke70 has got a k50 box too. I think the ae71 that is based on the ke70 (and very nearly an ae86 and still remains like a ke70 styled car) has the the t50 box and a xmember to mount the 4age!! Dont exist here in uk tho'

The only difference is the gearstick mounting position - it is further back on the ke70. I know as i was looking at a 4k 5 speed from a ke70 for the 4k kp.........

T BALL, If Iam right you have a LSD in that Axle/Diff I sold you some time back! Iam sure it has a F313 LSD which locks on accelaration, The test of leaving one wheel down & turning the other to see if it stops will not apply if the diff is a little old & worn, Needs a recondition kit but will still work as LSD on accelaration. Contact me & I will explain theone_ify@hotmail.com

mate the k50 should be sweet as if ure just slamming a stando 16v 4age in there t50 is a bit stronger but then u gotta go start sticking holes in ure drive tunnel and also they have a tendency to split in half. but you cant use any t50 you gotta get one tht used to be mounted up to a 3-au or 3-a engine and then take te tail housing off ure k50 and pt it on the new one so it goes thrw the same hole( not hard) check out this site everything u need to know
