Hello All!

I've been a lurker on this forum for a while, but after reading posts like this and similar I had to register. I am pleased to say I have 1.8 VVti Avensis saloon with no oil usage problem. Its a 2002, and has been a great car and faithful friend. Just come back from Italy in it, got home and it went straight in for its 80k service without a hitch and am very happy with it. I check my oil every week and it isnt using any. So its not all doom and gloom. I'm a big fan of the car

not wishing to pi** on anyones bonfire but If you have a 2002 Avensis you very likely have an engine with 2 out of the 3 modifications made to correct the problems with the Vvti engine. So hopefull you do havea good one.

But on a lighter note - welcome to the forum  good to have you aboard :D

my point is toyota now make bad engines unless as i stated you have a survey detaling all the major manufacturers with a breakdown of faults

oh right..... so the 3S-GTE was a bad engine? the 2JZ-GTE was a bad engine? the new 170bhp diesel is a bad engine?

tell you what mate you toddle of to your little group of honda lovers i'm sure they give a damn.

lets face it civic type r / corlla t sport. straight line hardly any diffferance betwwen them and as for blowing up..... not heard of one yet.

also if toyota are so bad how come they made more money in japan than any other company.

you seem to quote one instance of engine problems (exessive oil)this may have simply been a machining problem that affected a batch of engines and it only seems to show after a certain time (i am not saying this is fact, just my opinion).

now wheres the "BAN THE ANOYING TROLL" button

Thank you sir for a clean respectable fast reply, that actually had something nice to say ;)

My 1.8 T3-X has now done 25k miles

I'm more than happy with it! :D

I had a small issue when I first got it.

(wind noise through a poorly bonded windscreen)

The Toyota dealer sorted it under warranty, no big hassle

(took a 2 or 3 visits, but this was an elusive noise)

I have recommended Toyota to people, and still will

each manufacturer is capable of having poor batches - it's what they do about it that matters

I have been well treated by Toyota, so they get my thumbs up

Yep!1 The Toyota dealer is OK with me everything I asked for and more has been done. I asked about the engine oil problem with a rep from the dealers yesterday. He told me it was only a certain batch of engines and it was after they had done high mileage. The new Toyotas have very reliable engines he told me. I understand Toyota do have a fix for those engines using excessive oil. Some of the other makes of cars seem to have more problems than Toyota. The shaky bum Renault leaks water and has numerous other niggles. Peugot have lots of problems.

Afternoon all,

historical first post for me.

got an 02 D4D Avensis yesterday after 6 months heartbreak with an S40 which was after 4 years with a Cynos.

Delighted to be back in Toyotas, haven't let me down yet.

I love the one about Honda making millions of these VTEC engines and that NOT ONE has ever gone wrong.....

Yeah right.....there has gotta be a duff one somewhere

I have owned 8 Toyota's now and NOT ONE has developed ANY engine problem at all.

Only problems i have ever had have been wear and tear like suspension etc

Mmm... what kind of fault wasn't stated anyhow.

Strangely, my first of the VVT-i:s year 2000 Corolla never used a drop up to 70,000 km when I sold it last year. And it performed brilliantly in every respect from new. I expect the same of my new Avensis.

My dealer keeps an official fault-by-fault, year by-year European car survey on his desk and I think Toyota would have stood out among the other makes if it showed a high percentage of engine faults. Honda also make good cars, of course, as do Nissan, whom I noticed on the survey were slightly ahead of Toyota in certain areas in certain years.

I live in a country that demands a reliable car that can take pretty severe conditions. Strangely, the Corolla and Avensis remain the most sold in their class -- I parked in the local city the other day and I had an Avensis parked to the front and rear and five drove past in 10 minutes. A large proportion of our taxis are Avensi. I think we'd know about it if Toyota's engines were falling to pieces left right and centre.

Just to debunk the myth about the VTEC engine failures. According to Honda they've never had a VTEC unit failure. This may well be true but the engine can fail without it being caused by the VTEC unit.

I know of loads of Honda VTEC engine failures but none have been caused by the VTEC system of the engine. Hence Honda class it as not a VTEC unit failure.

As someone quoted before "there are lies, Damn lies and statistics"

For the record the oil useage problem was on zz engines made from 2000-2002 these are the 1.4 1.6 1.8 engines. I had a corolla with a oil problem. That engine was replaced after a few trips to the dealer. Toyota on the whole are one of the most reliable cars on the road. I work at a toyota specialist and there are very few toyotas that have major problems. We have the odd one or two made in the period of 2000-2002 that drink oil but thats about it. At the end of the day a car is a machine made up of many working parts, and over time things will ware out. Has far has i'm concerned i'm toyota today toyota tomorrow and toyota forever. I have recomended toyota to friends my dad already has been a toyota driver for 10 years or so and cannot fault them.
