My TNS 200 (installed in my 2002 RAV 4) has stopped reading the CDrom. Have cleaned the disc to no avail. Dealer advises may be a problem with the disc reader (lens part?) and no parts available for this TNS model as it is obsolete (!) Could supply replacement unit for £1,200! Anyone had similar problems? Any cheaper solution?

At a guess, you'd probably find one on eBay.

Another alternative is to find someone who's a little confident enough to strip the disk drive down and clean the laser lense directly, some can also be adjusted to so they can be re-focussed.

And by the way, hello! Looks like you just joined!

Yup - I'm a newcomer and still finding out how to post a reply!!

Have had the unit apart and no obvious dirt on the lens. What is the best way to clean it? The disc reader unit is easily removed so I wonder if it is a standard component that could be sourced from an electronic spares supplier?

You could buy this if your Quick http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-TNS-200-SAT-N...1QQcmdZViewItem

then sell the leads & disc as people are always after these

I used to repair car audio equipment and specialised in amps and CD players. You can attempt to clean the lens with a cotton bud and a little drop of meths or other achohol based fluid. Just ensure that all the residue is removed after cleaning and buff up gently with a clean dry bud.

If this still doesn't bring results the optical pick-up unit (the lens) will probably have a number on the side which will be the part number which can then use to trace a replacement (try CPC). The replacement should require no setting up and is therfore an easy job with all cables etc just plug-in type.

Another possibility is that the disc has become faulty. Perhaps duplicating it onto a CDR will sort it...a PC is much more likely to read a dodgy disk than a car head unit...
