Yaris Or Cbr600?

So I've sold my Supe, have about 4 days left with it and then it's gone.

Currently driving a 94 Micra, 54BHP woohoo!!

I've also just bought a house with the missus, including carpets, sofa, cooker etc. etc. I have no money!!

I do however have a very strong urge to be in/on a fast vehicle of some kind.

SO....... What do I do?

My current choices are:

  • [1] Sell the Micra and buy a more reliable Yaris, newer with air con etc. This'd be very nice as TBH I would be pretty happy with a safe bet car that I know won't break, the missus can use it etc.
[2] Keep the Micra and hope it doesn't break!! But use the money (that I don't have! ) to do my CBT, theory, DAS and buy a bike and gear.

Yarii can be got for reasonable price, even a nice spec one isn't too much. The bike option will cost about £1k + buying a bike - although then I'll have the same problem I had with the Supe in that I'll have 2 insurances/tax/etc. to pay for each year.

What do people honestly think?

To be honest, mate, I think you've already answered your own question. If you go for the bike you'll incur a lot of regular extra expense and... your missus may kill or seriously injure you.

Ditch the micra, get the Yaris. That should keep you both happy (except for the speed bit of course).

Trouble is I seem to have a really bad temper, I've only realised this since getting a second car about 10 months ago! Not driving the Supe means I have no means to let my aggression out, and I'm reverting to my younger days when I bottled everything up (jeeez this is getting deep now!!).

Other than getting a gun or joining a Kung Fu class (again), a fast car/bike is the only realistic option. It works well for me anyway.

The gf is coming around to the idea of a bike now as well, it's only the danger and worrying about me when I go out on it that's the problem.

Hmm ..... nothing personal mate but from that response it sound that you won't live to long. You have got yourself a house and a girlfriend and your willing to give it all up because someone pisses you off and you have an accident on your bike/in your car.

We all get ****** off once in a while but you have to learn how to take it out by doing something else rather than putting yours and everybody else's life at risk.

Just think about it! - you may have just muddled your words up or had a bad day, but life is too important just to give up even if the world is falling apart today.

Being safe is the thing that counts and starting with a car/yaris would be it

I don't know you or how old you are but look on the bright side and try to get things sorted  !

Anyway - I'm sure the gf has already spent the money for your new bike/car on curtains or something ;)

And I apologise if you feel that I have jumped to any conclusions etc

Anger management classes?

Seriously, I was going to suggest something like a physical sport as I began to read your reply. Martial arts also can help you learn to develop ways of channelling your feelings and anger.

Saves worrying the missus and possibly (God forbid) wrapping yourself around something harder than you and the bike too.

Ooh no you've taken it wrong, I'm honestly not a mental or anything!!!

I actually drove my Supe like a granny, the gf got ****** off half the time cos I didn't 'make use' of it - I'd be too scared to do anything stupid on a fast bike!!!

It's more the fact that I own it and use it (maybe I'm just an attention !Removed! :D ) that calms me down (there I go using confusing terminology again!).

Oh and BTW I'm 24, normal family, no history of murders or anything, full time job, happy in everything. Maybe didn't put myself across very well saying I get stressed!!!

YARIS

T-Sport

Waiting for that suggestion too - I've thought about all that, was looking at getting an Elise or something cheaper, but I've concluded that NO car that I can afford will be fast/good enough for me any more. So as far as getting a car is concerned I'm only interested in good fuel economy, cheap tax/insurance, reliability and some creature comforts.

Good Good :lol::lol:

As for cars if you choose one over the bike try and get a TSport as I think that should give you want you want ...... or so I have been told  !

It looks good too ;) !

Well, I didn't think you were going to be a self-confessed serial killer or something.

Don't buy an Elise for heaven's sake. You want to reduce stress, not add to it.

My other half must be mega stressed (wonder why! )

He has a hot hatch (Ford Focus ST - not bright orange I might add) and he bought his first motorbike (Suzuki SV650S) a few weeks back. He loves them both, but he has special love for his bike.

He says its good for de-stressing

I worry about him on the bike, but lets face it, you could get hit by a bus tomorrow, so if you want a bike, have a bike! Just make sure you have all the proper safety equipment to go with it (not cheap btw!)

Like I said it's about £1k all in + a bike. Gear is about £400-£500 (and half of that is the lid!!!). CBR600 from about 1997/98 go for around £1500-£2000 for mid mileage version (that's 0-60 in 3.5, 0-100 in 7, top speed of 150 ish!!! For under £2k!!!), plus I've got to do a CBT, theory and DAS and test which all together is about £650-£700.

A good Yaris will cost about the same including selling up the Micra for a slightly more reasonable price than it's currently advertised for :D .

Insurance quote I had on a '98 CBR600 was £210. Same price as a Yaris; except I'd have to pay the Micra insurance still which is £180 ATM - £20 a month extra?

You tart! £500 on gear! What the hell are you buying?!?!

Then again, H*nda's are for poofs... :P

The good thing with the H*nda, is that they are pretty bullet-proof engines, as long as they have been regularly maintained.

I've got the Yaris as my run-around, and a Bandit 750 'fighter for the hooliganism.

As Dem said, you could be dead tomorrow, so if you truely can afford it, then my opinion is go for it. You can get a Supercar (if you can afford it), but you can get a similar power:weight on a bike, for change compared to a Ferrari, etc...

Insurance is good as well.

Tax will be £45 or £60 a year, petrol - you'll get about 130 on a tank I reckon, for about £13 (Perhaps more).

IMO, only go for it, if you can truely afford it, and if you truely want a bike. ;)

go for the yaris

i dont mean to patronise or judge your driving skill here, but if i was stood in my old mans shoes id be giving you a lecture about how people jump out of fast cars and think they can handle fast bikes... and then die!

i may be talking complete cobblers and youll be a bit more mature and learn to ride properly first, but on the terms of de-stressing then it kinda switches the mood again

like i say, im not having a dig, just passing opinion, if you go for the crotch rocket then good on ya

Thanks, Gnome.... I think!

I think I'll sort out my provisional entitlement on my license, then do a CBT. See where we go from there - if I REALLY like riding then points to the bike option, otherwise I can always give up on the idea! :D

I need to be in the house for a few months anyway first to sort out our finances, I could be in the **** with money in 6 months time otherwise!! That way prices will be low as it'll be winter coming up as well.

If you can wait, winter is the best time for getting a bike.

For gear, visit somewhere like the Ally Pally show in London, or the BMF shows (20th/21st May and September 19th/20th I believe).

I've been on two wheels for 6 years now, and it's great.

As Jaxx has pointed out though, there are alot of people jumping on to bikes, who can't comprehend the power these little machines punt out. One quick action of the throttle, and you could be on your behind, watching your brand new bike skittling down the road....

Would also recommend a police ride too. Get taken out with a boy in blue (usually in "disguise" :D), and then they give you a summary of your riding, and tips for any improvements.

Yeah I know what you mean, the Supe is as fast as a good 600 from a roll on so I've got some idea of how quickly you can be doing silly speed, although I'm not kidding myself into thinking it'd be anything like the same on a bike!!!

But at least I've experienced 150+mph, and got there in very short space of time, I know how quickly things change at that speed and the dangers etc. so I'm a bit more prepared than most.

Also I respect the power, I do drive like a granny (I know you probably don't believe that though) so I think I'll be OK generally. I'm not the kind of person who'll blindly drive between traffic either because I understand there are some real ******s on the road who'll get jealous and decide to change lanes at the wrong moment!!!

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. I'll be sure to tell everyone what I decide.

Get the bike ..

When I have to drive a "normal" car for anything over 5mins I get depressed and agressive. And that's when the danger starts. I have been a LOT worse on the roads in a curtousy yaris that I ever was in my MR2/S2000. As you can't react, you can't move, you are stuck in that box.

I'm looking at getting a bike for the commute and general about town traveling. Leave a normal car at home for the tesco run.

Hey - when Teeg's finished with her motor...

Remember seeing a stretched-framed rat bike some years back, and the guy had a car wheel for the rear, and stuffed a Subura Legacy engine into the frame! :o

  • 3 weeks later...

Well it's been decided - I'm picking up a 2001 Yaris SR in flame gold next Monday! :D

I'm sure I'll get some pics up for you when I get it.

I'll be asking questions soon too. Like is there no way of changing the head unit and keeping the control buttons and display working? Also what size Speakers fit in the front and back? Probably go for components in the front and 2-ways in the rear - with a 4 channel amp supplying them!!
