Intersting Wee Light - What Is It For?

As the end of summer approaches, the use of headlights is once again necessary for my daily commute. I noticed last night that there is a small red / orange light in the overhead panel of my T3-X that shines down towards the gearstick but is so dim that its almost un-noticable. It only seems to be on when the headlights are on.

Anyone know what its for?

It's just a faint light to glow on the gear knob and that area of the car so you have some clue of where you are reaching. A concept borrowed from BMW. How we managed all those years to change gears without being able to see where it was at night........
