1990 Camry Transmission Gone?

1990 Camry, 4 cyl with automatic transmission died. Now, nothing engages transmission - not even parking gear - car still rolls freely. One guy told me it was the "transmission cable" that broke. Another told me the transmission is "gone". Suggestions? I'm very mechanically inclined. How to check the "easy" fix, namely broken transmission cable? :huh:

have someone look under the hood and find the gear selector at the transmission, have them watch it while you move the shifter, if the piece outside doesn't move, find out why, it may just need a clip to hold a cable on
